Exactly which Chuck is responding to me? There was quite the legion there. Well at least a small scouting party.

In light of CKC's goal of providing the basics of ministry and church life in the UMC, I think this segment was really needed; because in many conferences the LPs make up the majority of clergy. As a full-time LP, I must disagree with Wayne Pratt's criticism of this video. I don't feel mocked at all. However, my only criticism is that the video fails to mention that LPs can pursue ordination via completion of the Basic and Advanced Courses of Study. Otherwise, good job of explaining the basics.

Lighten up, will you? :-p We're not exactly packing our churches with 20-somethings with the moldy oldies; so making this stuff palatable to our young people is one step closer to getting them back into the life of the church. IMO

I fail to see how this is a "mockery of the office of local pastor". Please explain.

This series of videos really needs to be renamed "Chuck Knows UMC". A lot of what is discussed in them is solid UMC doctrine, but not universally true within other Protestant or non-Catholic traditions. Autonomous groups (those which do not have a hierarchical structure with a superintendent, bishop, etc.) where the congregation functions independently are often quite different from the UMC. For example, in the Baptist church a deacon is a lay officer, one who is elected (along with many others) by the congregation to serve as an administrator, unpaid assistant to the pastor, or in whatever function the church decides. In these churches, a person is "licensed (endorsed) to preach" by vote of the congregation. He/she may or may not become ordained. A person may keep his/her "license" for a lifetime and simply serve as a lay preacher.
