To answer your question, well, we don't know why either. Finding the inspiration for innovation: a blessing + a curse. But when you're too busy working on the business of skateboards, sometimes, you don't get out as much as you want to innovate, to enjoy the ride, and everything in between. Still love my custom 35, on s10’s. Ride it to the shops, ride it to work. The Apex 40 is for tougher stuff. My first longboard was a malakai and I still have the s6’s on my lush Makonga. That setup is ridiculous man. The S8s / S10s don't really work right (or at least not the way we wanted them to work) without a flexy board and ideally a flexy board with an asymetrical flex profile to generate that surfy drive from the back. People are down on rear steer but thats the only thing a surfboard does most of the time and that's exactly what we were looking for from that Custom 35. I would love to go back over to the dark side and start messing with flex again, I do think there is a place for it even in the high end DH stuff (albeit totally different than what we are talking about here) so learning more about it in general is something I am stoked on. Hard to believe you got a hold of all of those boards out of the UK. I can only imagine that took some gymnastics of some sort to make it happen. Thanks for the support and stay in touch! There were also those OS trucks with bushings(?) prototypes that Bish was riding back in 2011
@ScottImbrie
@ScottImbrie 3 жыл бұрын
There for sure were bushing based OS trucks. And there were some hybrids based on a design I saw some dude on the old silverfish forums create that used a standard bushing AND a spring. Most of the issues surrounding the trucks relate to not being able to generate enough resistance, that goes for springs AND bushings mostly due to the fact that we have an additional basic machine (wavecam) that more efficiently leverages whatever force the rider generates into the resistance mechanism. We basically found that the bushings need to be super fucking hard to come anywhere close to the spring resistance or that we would need some changes to the trucks themselves increase the amount of resistance they generated to compensate. On top of that it would basically throw what everyone knows about the correct bushing durometer for their weight in the garbage and require education from scratch on that topic (which is hard). All of that isn't to say it's not worth it, but it is to say that the complicated mechanics of the trucks combined with the fact that the RKP platform is essentially open source with a million people working on bushings, some more people working on pivot cups and yet more people working on precision hangers et al. resulted in some huge developments there that far outpaced anything we could do on our own. I think you can count the number of reasonably effective alternative truck designs (ie. not RKP / TKP) on one hand and only one of those (that comes readily to mind) works in the current DH based setting that pretty much all trucks are not expected to excel in. There is a reason for that (it's hard, and expensive) so if we want to actually do it we would have to (I think?) drop pretty much everything else and focus on nothing but that. Since right now I feel like there is a lot more different stuff we can do that isn't in the trucks side of things I am putting that on the backburner for now until we get through some of the more impactful stuff that hopefully will contribute to the way people make decks for the next however many years. Which of course may not work. Regardless that's the plan atm.

Hah that shit you experience stacks up over the years haha I will for sure check the yoga out, my dad is huge into it. These days I am focused on strength training to try to keep my chronic fatigue symptoms tamped down. Finally getting enough aerobic capacity back to paddle in the lake and start training for surfing again now that my heart has decided to function properly when exerting myself and laying down. That said the strength training for the CFS needs a counter weight and yoga would for sure help there. Thankfully I am back on a board (albeit doing minor stuff) and got a decent snowboard season of travels (Breck, Whistler, Mt. Hood, Tahoe) in before Coronavirus cut that short. The snow stuff has always been easier for me and plus it doesn't kill you as bad if you mess up unexpectedly (although I have two busted wrists and a rib which would argue otherwise). Regardless. Honestly. I wonder if running the s series trucks at low degrees since they have so much lean and turn could help make them stable. I remember how agile my S10 trucks were despite being 250mm wide
@ScottImbrie
@ScottImbrie 3 жыл бұрын
That's where I was headed too. The weird thing is that as you reduce the angle you actually increase the amount of leverage that a given riders weight generates which makes whatever spring / bushing / resistance mechanism that you have in there LESS effective overall. Given that the WaveCam mechanic is already a more pure translation of the leverage the rider is generating that is not a great combination. Essentially I would max out the white spring super easy even as a 150lb bean pole without even trying (not that I am anymore). Basically to drop the angle we needed to change the resistance to something other than a spring, and urethane was complicated because again, it generates way more leverage which makes a 'hard' bushing for an RKP feel super freaking soft. I think that's why some of the other urethane based trucks that have been successful with different mechanics (read: Rojas etc) have gone away from a traditional durometer reading, or at least labeled it some way that makes sense relative to normal bushings even if the duro is actually different. Per usual things that are more complicated to start with get more complicated as you attempt to improve them, so if you want to really do it you have to pick that project as the one thing you are going to do and block everything else out. I think it's doable but right now the ideas I am working on are much more toward decks etc. since the evolution of urethane formulas (see: IDF banning race wheels that are not publically available) and precision mechanics has pushed standard RKPs forward in a huge way.
@yehohnathanherrera1779

@@ScottImbrie yeah I mean my first deck was a pintail 43 with white springs on s10 trucks and boy was that thing so agile. Probably fast tracked my way to strong downhill ankles. But I think the original truck design can be improved. Cause essentially they truck has very low slop. Even when it was available almost 10 years ago. I think Scott. If you tried getting a even stiffer spring and try a low degree. It could have some good results. Cause I've been trying to eliminate as much slop in my current trucks and I just know there's a better way. And Rojas is truly ahead of its time. But it's overly expensive for most. I've tried over 15 different trucks over my years and nothing has yet to be as agile and leany as s series trucks. I know development is not cheap. But even small adjustments to strength in the cam wave ( I broke a few cause I'm 200lbs haha) and a stiffer spring could wield some unexpected performance boosts for a truck as unique. I think at a time where this industry is struggling. I think we need innovation and looking back at old ideas and seeing how we can update them. Much love dude. Kick ass. Making me want to order some s trucks and tinker myself haha
@originalskateboards
@originalskateboards 3 жыл бұрын
Fast tracked downhill ankles is right! I was actually just talking to a girl from Holland about how OS trucks are sort of a hybrid that falls between a surf skate setup (ie. with the pivoting front truck ala carver etc) and a DH longboard. The advantage being that you are actually building the balance skills and muscle memory that DOES help on the big hills, while rocking the S8s or S10s on the flats (I don't know why we even make S6es). Stiffer spring on the lower angle is def where we will head with this but my plan is to take some of the stuff that Rojas learned (or we learned through Rojas?) and incorporate / combine that with the spring concept to handle the additional torque / leverage. I think it will work. You are right though the small changes are really where things build and improve. This year is about boards because we have some really different stuff that will come from the small changes you will see to the line up. It will seem like more of the same that you see elsewhere but the reason we are focused on boards this year will be a lot more clear next year. Stoked to see what you think as we inch toward that goal! I promise we will get back to improving the trucks. _Scott

@@PixDDD This always confused me. Somehow Sidewinders and OS trucks were bad but no one gave a shit that Carver focused full-on on surf skate dynamics and is making more money every week these days than most of us in longboard / dh peons ever did in a year. Not saying it's bad, but it is confusing. I always looked at beginner boards like snowboarding or surfing. Not everyone is going to race border cross so why would we start them out on a border cross deck? Shit half the ski hills in the world don't even have a course (and a lot of the U.S. is flat as fuck / doesn't need the same skate gear) I don't know that you get to the destination faster as a beginner by starting on a high end DH capable setup even if that's where you want to go. Maybe? I agree that being able to control your speed is critical at all levels but I don't know that starting people on pure DH stuff gets them to a place where they can comfortably stay safe / have fun on any hill they come up on any faster. I think that's the discussion we all need to have (and sort out) if we really want this sport to go beyond where it was last time and to be more than just a fraction of shortboard / street skateboarding that it has always been. I want to see the best DH guys get paid and I do think that we need to think about the equipment we are putting the average rider on if we want to get there.

I just got an Original 46'' Bamboo Pintail with S10 trucks. Changed the front truck for a surf adapter (Flying wheels) which looks like a Smoothstar thruster and an Independent forged titanium tkp to reduce the weight. So far, I could take the pintail out for a short ride only because of the weather. Like this the setup became super nimble and turny. Also, it still offers some crazy lean and perfect flex! When carving very hard the original back truck is making some noise - looks like the nylon insert is scraping along the aluminum casing of the truck. I just hope it takes a session or two to disappear. So far, I really like the feel of the original truck! Hopefully, there will be S8 trucks to buy in Europe soon - unfortunatelly, I did not find any. Looking very much forward to taking the new setup to the hills! I believe the original truck might me the perfect rear truck for performance surfskates when hitting some serious slope. Can't wait to see what the use of torque will do & how the flexy deck and the S10 will perfom when surfskating fast and turning deep. Cheers!

Hey Double - First off stoked to see some serious surf skate experimentation (see my avatar hah!). We started OS working toward that exact goal although the result ended up being more like power carving down the line and less like surfing top to bottom (where the nose is more weightless). There are a couple possibilities on the back truck. 1. You are correct - sometimes the aluminum casing for the white wave cam CAN remain sharp after being machined. This can score the wavecam and may need to be addressed either by sanding the edge of the casing tube (closest to the hanger) or by replacing the baseplate entirely. I would say send it back and we will fix it up but being in the EU it sounds like it might be better to fix it up in the garage. 2. For ANY squeeking truck (ours or otherwise) the best (and weirdest) solution is Bar Soap shavings. I don't know why it works but it does - whether you are on RKP trucks (Paris, Caliber etc) OS trucks or anything else, shaving a bar of soap with a cheese grater and then putting the shavings in the pivot cup (or in OS trucks case, inside the casing) has a dampening effect and really quiets them quick. We are here to help, can't wait to hear how that setup rides. My guess is the OS truck in the back with the surfskate pivot up front will make a longer board more surf-skate-ey (which normally doesnt work so hot). Thanks for checking in man!

Thanks for your answer Scott! Will definitely let you know how the setup turns out when it is ready. Of course I will do a clip featuring the modified OS Pintail & let you know. Thank you again - Dan

@@DoubleOverhead looks like fun to me man! Can't wait to see it on the pavement and ripping of turns. Bet the extra lean in the back gives a bit more drive in some cases and let's you finish the turn more efficiently in some cases!
