It was the perfect storm but boy did the Beatles have the chops to back it up. The songs are timeless classics.

This is what my brothers and parents told me about that night the Beatles came on. My mother went into the bedroom she could not stand the Beatles and all this talk about them (she was recovering from heart surgery) My father my brothers and me (I was 2 at the time) saw this show. My brothers and father said I was bouncing up and down in my crib to the music and had a big smile on my face. Even then I knew they would be my favorite group of all time

But the Beatles appeared on tape (or film) on the Tonight Show with Jack Parr, two weeks before the Sullivan appearance. I remember talking about it with my junior high school friends the next school day.

I Want To Hold Your Hand was #1 in the charts in America on February 1st, eight days a week before the Ed Sullivan Show, and stayed at #1 for seven weeks before She Loves You moved to #1. Jack Paar had aired a clip on Jan. 3rd from the Bournemouth concert to prepare America for Beatlemania.

The description of the moods and stagnation in the US, was shown in their music. I totally agree with that description, and have always thought it was a major cause of the reception, the Beatles received , but, in no way devalued their musical abilities and fresh approach . In the US, the era before the Beatles ,was the era when many US pop stars, were named BOBBY.---Vinton, Rydell, Darin, Vee, Bare, etc.etc all cute teenager's with huge quaffs of hair combed back.

No, they played at the Washington Coliseum (their first US concert) after their first Sullivan gig and before their second Sullivan gig in Miami.

I'm not sure that the Pop Music Industry was stuck in a "commercial rut" before the Beatles arrival. Yeah I was sick of hearing The Singing Nuns and Puff the Magic Dragon but the summer of '63 was the high water mark for Girl Groups and Surf Music, not to mention many other great songs. However, The Beatles certainly did spark record sales.

In England there was also many other similar groups not only in Liverpool also London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol etc.
