42. DIY Lubing diesel locomotives pt 2

In part 1 I showed how to lube the more complicated Atlas models. Today I want to show you a somewhat easier model mechanism and one that has been around in various forms for almost 70 years! Yes, the basic Athearn drive used in their models and also in LifeLike and Walthers locos. Once again I have kept this one down to about 10 minutes so you can watch the whole thing on your coffee break, so kick back and enjoy!

great video, awesome channel. All my life I've been DC N scale.. since joining the Ocala Model RR Historical Society I've made the jump to HO & DCC.. and know very little in this arena. I'll be binge watching a lot of the information you've provided. Thank you.. Tom

I really like Athens products but I think the locomotive run and terms up Beater with flywheel drive.....

You touched on the issue that I have, and that is removing the shell from the motor and gears. Is there somewhere I can find out how to remove the shell to lubricate the gears on Bachmann and Athearn rs-3s? Thanks.

Hi Larry once again.. So, I purchased the axle gears..re watched your video on installing them and they went in fine. They are gauged perfect. I tried to get as close as possible to have the same amount of distance from the gear to the bearing. Much to my surprise it doesn't seem to run as good as it did with the cracked growling gears. What I did notice upon lubrication ..in my opinion having never been inside an HO loco before..the gears down in the truck seem very wobbly.. is this common? Are these gears normally quite loose? I re watched both of your lubricating diesel videos again to see if you mentioned anything in them about my current question.. you didn't. So, I am asking about it. Thank you in advance. And, thank you for putting out all the excellent information that you do. Tom .. I forgot to mention I am dealing with an Athearn RS-3 stock number 94032.

The Athearn mechanism is a bit old and sloppy. Did you replace all the fears or just a couple? The reason I ask os there are two different versions with different numbers or teeth. So if you mix and match they might not run so well together-I always replace all anyway since if one is cracked they all will go soon enough. My Athearn RS3 is my worst runner, even my old LifeLike RS2’s run better, probably why they discontinued the model!

@@TheDCCGuy Larry, thank you for your reply. I did change all four gears. And I have counted the teeth ..12 on the old as well as the new. The package reads: Athearn ATH 60024 Drive Axle Gear- SD40-2/SD40T-2

Also..I don't remember what speed step exactly it use to run at on my power cab.. my other three move at 2-4.. I think this did as well.. now, it revs up and up until it moves at 10..and it runs pulsating..not smooth. And, it won't run nice and slow as it did prior to doing the gears.

@@Mercatoyd You might go back and make sure the gears did not split installing them. I have never seen this issue on my replacements.
