Crazy power in that final sprint. I want to get a power meter but I also don’t wanna find out that my power cap is at 300W 🤣
@NorCalCycling

best thing i ever did for my training, was got a powermeter and did structured workouts. but ya, i feel you, it's discouraging to compare yourself to people when the number is right in front of you. I look at my FTP and feel unworthy, so that's why I structure my training accordingly.
@tima6585

just got myself a powermeter as well, but got injured the week before it arrived. Trust me, it is even more frustrating to have a powermeter sitting right in front of you, but you cant use it because your body doesnt want you to... xD
@jshepard5840
@jshepard5840 3 жыл бұрын
I don't race, so a power meter isn't really worth the investment for me. $1,000 for a pair of pedals seems a bit much. But the much less expensive way to train is by heart rate. You have heart rate zones the same as you have power zones. Polarized training uses heart rate rather than power and with very good results. Maybe look into that.
@nickdorsett7777
@nickdorsett7777 3 жыл бұрын
@@jshepard5840 You can get a power meter crank spider for about $500, the power2max NG eco, and I believe also some quarq models, way better than pedals IMO. Heart rate training is highly variable depending on recovery state, temperature, and such. It is effective, but much more so when combined with power

@NorCal Cycling I’d love to see you do a video that discusses what a Criterium race is compared to local 100 mile “Tour de Hometown” races, or the Giro, etc. There’s probably a lot of viewers new to cycling because of the ’rona who are getting interested in the different race options. I totally love to understand (now) how cycling is a TEAM sport. Although I know it is, I've always thought that individual results are at least as important. Following these vids, I know really see that it is nothing different to football (soccer) or basketball. You all win when the team wins. Personal wins are more like goals/ points for soccer/ basketball. Nice. Keep up putting these vids out, great fun to watch even though I don't do races.

Sadly I'm nowhere near as good a narrator (or as fast) as you are, but one of my favorite memories of my racing days was in the Cat 3 Road Race at the Edge City Stage Race here in Texas. I had just got 3rd in the field sprint on day 1 in the first RR, and although I was expecting a good result in the TT, I only ended up getting 12th. So I started the 2nd day very-not-happy, and was sitting somewhere around 10th on the GC. Prior to the start I was warming up with the guy who got dead last in the TT - due to a broken chain. He was Cat 1/2 level physically, (I later found he'd coached a few Olympians and Ironmen but hadn't been racing enough to get the points to cat up.) Anyways, we got to talking and he mentioned that he was planning a breakaway effort from Kilometer 0, and since I was looking to make a comeback that day I decided to go with him. When the race started though, he launched off so fast he surprised me and got a gap of about 200 meters before most the guys knew what was happening. About 1K into the race I launched my attack, and just bombed down the first hill. On the flat soon after, I looked down and was spinning at about 43mph in Junior Gears, with the whole field strung out in single file on my wheel, and watched as the guy right behind me slipped farther and farther back, inching his way in reverse...and then the string snapped and I was free. There's a certain feeling you get when that happens for the first time, and it fueled me to bridge the gap to the rider up the road. That was just the start though, about the first 2 or 3 miles. As soon as I got with the guy, we started working together to grow the gap we had. Harder and harder we worked, and as the sun rose we knew we were in trouble. It was August in East Texas, and if anyone here has raced in the South during the Summer, you know what it's like. It got up to around 103 or so that day, the humidity was near 75%, and the salt was just everywhere. In the eyes, making the bars slippery and stinging the road rash. I distinctly remember the Moto Ref coming up to us about halfway through the 70 miles, and I was about delirious at that point. He held up the chalkboard, and showed us that the Gap to the main field was over 10 Minutes. Now that got our attention, and all we could do was grit our teeth and suffer up every hill, while trying to coast everywhere we could trying to regain even the smallest bit of energy. The last couple miles were complete agony for me, and my breakaway "teammate" and to be completely fair he had been doing most the work. He suddenly got suspicious though, and dropped back to talk about our GC placing, and through some quick calculations we were able to determine that I was about 6 Minutes ahead of him in the GC - too much of a gap for him to close until the finish line, so he made me agree to not contest the finish and he would let me win the overall - to which I quickly agreed. That was my first time making a deal mid-race with anyone, and my legs were shot anyways - besides I felt that it was an underhanded move to try and beat him at the line since he had helped me so much. So that was my first win of a stage race. My man in the break got 2nd overall, and my frenemy rival from one of our local race teams took the 3rd step on the podium. Never have I had such deep, vivid memories and even though I will likely never be able to race again, I will always be able to remember those special bonds formed in the moments of pain and suffering with complete strangers on the road. TL;DR : Thank you so much for the videos, they bring back so many memories and feelings. I subbed immediately and am looking forward to more and more new content! (Edit: The first video I clicked on because I thought it was one of the guys from the biggest P/1/2 team in Austin Texas, (not sure if you've heard of it) called Elbowz Racing. Same exact color scheme on the kit, and the exact same bike they rode as a team.)

@Norcalcycling - love your vids, which are entertaining and have made me a better rider, but at 6:38 you said something that did not quite ring true for me. Although Chris's w/kg is truly impressive at 6.2-6.3 but in a breakaway situation on flat terrain, would it not be more relevant to know his total watts and watts-to-drag ratio? Much as in a TT, where big guys can be TT World Champion but could never hang with high power-to-weight guys on climbs and vice versa. Thank you.

Jeff, great vid as usual . I just have a couple of questions if it's not too much trouble: 1) Is that 43mph sprint a product of the tail wind or is that your raw 1200 watt power? How important is momentum in achieving that speed? I tried a sprint from a standing start and hit 32mph. I weigh 213lbs so that was the best I could do. It was basically your attack at around 4:10 or so. hahahahhaa Your attack is my best sprint. :D 2) I looked long and hard at the Venge Pro like you have but I decided to go with a left-over 2019 Cannondale System Six Hi-Mod Di2. What's your opinion on that bike? I'm expecting it sometime this coming week. 3) What tire pressure are you racing with? Like a rookie, in the past I raced on 23c with 120psi. hahahahahahaha Racing hasn't started back up over here on the East Coast. If it doesn't I'm just going to keep training and try to get down to 190lbs before the spring races start up again in 2021. Great job as usual and hey, please don't hesitate to put out content. Even if you think it's silly or too basic, I would imagine that there are quite a few of us CAT5s who are watching looking for tips. Stay healthy bro! Looking forward to the next one.

I can hold 1100watts for about the same time but can barely get past 35mph. Maybe it's the wheels.

It's a few things, least of which are your wheels. More importantly is getting a draft, staying aero, and doing it all in a tailwind.

What's the point of constantly attacking and opening gaps if you get caught right after? Because you're doing the same distance in the same time, except your heart rate got spiked a bunch of times and the guy that caught you maintained a constant effort. Wouldn't it be better to save the energy and do a big attack in the end? Disclaimer: I'm a distance running athlete, never raced in cycling. Just trying to understand the reason behind it.

You don't always get caught right after. Like in this video Chris didn't get caught and won.

If you can get a good group of guys in a break, it might stick. Me for example, I'm an FTP guy. I can ride the limit and sit high Z4/Z5 forever; the type of guy you want in a break. If I were for example, to form a break with one of my teammates who is a sprinter, it's essentially game over. Attacks also tire other racers out, forcing them to either let you go and take the risk you'll gas out, or to work and get back in your draft.
@markrahman9320
@markrahman9320 3 жыл бұрын
It's like rolling the dice and see if you get a good combination of riders to stick it and win it. If you can get into a breakaway it increases your odds of winning from that smaller group. If you have a big team representing you can keep a designated sprinter in the peloton, not doing work to chase anything back, so that the sprinter is fresh as a daisy if it comes down to a bunch sprint against others who may have spent a lot of energy preventing breakaways. Get yourself a bike, come to the dark side. :-)

In running, we have the same tactic with a different objective. It's a "fake pacer" who attacks in the beginning of the race while the teammates stay in the draft of the peloton, making the opponents chase it (like a bait, he knows he won't be able to finish). It's rarely used because it rarely works. No one chases early attacks because they'll blow out before the finish line, we just let him go. In cycling, you guys seem to take it seriously, I just found that odd.

Nuno Interesting. I would guess it’s because the benefit of drafting in cycling (if for no other reason than the higher speed of rolling on wheels) is so much higher. It enables a rider who nearly empties the tank to be able to tag on and recover in the draft.

I really don't get american races. You jumped in while the rest of the group already did a lap. There bikes have lights on them and saddle bags. And there are just cars driving around. Races in europe are very different.

These are not sanctioned races, I think. Just group rides that turn into a race. We have those in Europe too, all it takes is a few guys with bikes and plenty testosterone.
