This is a video my Father shot of 4449 with its skirting removed and a nice layer of grime applied. The occasion was filming of the movie Come See the Paradise. Scenes were shot at Portland Union Station.

This was around 1989/1990, Tyler :) That was when "Come See the Paradise" was filmed in Portland - 4449 was given water-soluble (or removable-by-water) black paint for the movie - you can still see the Daylight colors underneath the temporary paint if you look closely ;) But when 4449 was first in Oaks Park, she was indeed painted black with a white pilot.

It may seem blasphemous, but I actually like the way she looks here. It shows a part of her history that we may not necessarily want to remember, when she was being phased out by a forward-thinking railroad management, long after she outlived her usefulness as a passenger locomotive, but still clinged to life hauling mail trains and commuters, and the occasional excursion. This is just as legitimate of an appearance as the way she looks now with the single-beam headlight and forward-mounted number boards. She and her sisters spent just as much, if not more time looking like this, as they did looking as she does now, with a fresh coat of paint and all her pre-war detailing.

with the 4449 all stripped it down it don't looks like my 4458 I used to get three week ends a month to keep steam up in, it was a what they called the stripped down model these engines never had skirts on them, and they were painted a flat black I don't remember how many the southern pacific had I know they had the 4458.that I remember at one time there was the KLAMMOUTH SECTION 1 AND SECOND 2 which met at the Eugene depot for service one came in at 7:20 and the second came in in behind it at 7:40 in the evening and they were serviced. The first second would leave out and the second section would leave twenty minutes later. I used to go down and watch the guys service both engines, that is when I worked on day shift I could do this because I also worked for the southern pacific rail road.my self. those were the days. a Memorie !!!

@dolothedolphin8 жыл бұрын
That is not true. The real story for the AFT (American Freedom Train) is that in 1973, a train was established, it was for the 200th anniversary of the United States of America. The train was filled with artifacts and important things of the American culture, for instance the Declaration of Independence. The 3 engines that were used where, Texas & Pacific #610 (partially painted red white, and blue) Reading #2101 (numbered #1 and had her running boards painted red for the occasion), and Southern Pacific #4449 (fully painted red, white and blue. Union Pacific #844 (then #8444), had a small role pulling the train with #4449 (it was not painted). Many locos were considered for pulling this train, including #844. The train was to travel around the country, with the 3 engines alternating runs. This amazing run started in the summer of 1975 (June 20th to be exact) and ended on December 31st, 1976, more than a year after it's beginning. Anyone do correct me if my facts are wrong... :)
@creepershoriginals23608 жыл бұрын

Kourtney Kaine Creeperish Originals said that the AFT was pulled after 9/11. Thats incorrect; the AFT was pulled in '75-'76. You are correct with what you are saying about how she wore the AFT colors after 9/11, I was just correcting their error about the AFT after 9/11...
@dolothedolphin7 жыл бұрын
Creepersh Originals First of all I didn't say it was fake. Second of all I was just showing that you mixed up the fact of #4449 pulling the AFT in '75-'76 and you saying that she pulled the AFT after 9/11. She wore her AFT scheme after 9/11, but she just didn't pull any AFT trains.
