Great video. I love my egolf, it’s such a geat car. I considered buying an ID3, bur after a testdrive the idea was gone 😁. The range of the golf is enough for nearly everything you throw at it, and range isn’t everything what makes a good EV. The combination of every feature makes a great car, and the eGolf is one, for sure 😄👍 (only difference is, i don’t like the digital display so much. The analog dials with the big infotainment screen is it for me. Everybody important is clearly visible in every lighting situation, amd the rest is on the infotainment, where i use google maps and stuff) PS: there are two levels of lane assist. The simple one which only protects you from leaving the lane, for people who don’t want the system to interfere with their driving, and the more active one, which holds the car in the middle of the lane, and is more the thing you obviously expected. You can change the behavior in the system settings. I like the more active one, too 😁

Thanks I was waiting for this review for some time now. I owe new E-Golf now for 3 month and just today turned 10.000km with it. I love it. I didn't have any issue with overheating till now but I also didn't drive more then 500km in a day. I love dinamic light and hope they will never brake if they have to brake then I hope they will do while still warranty is active :) "Autopilot" to be exact you can drive without touching it for 33s then car will automaticly brake. But you can also trick system when you hang on steering wheel weight arround 0,5-1kg, then system will think you are touching it and in my experiance car drove alone for more than 5km (but you have to have both lines on tarmac visable). Again thanks for this video, you came almost to same conclusions as I did, but for me this new E-Golf works just fine.

@mkonci
@mkonci 6 жыл бұрын
My longest drive without charging was 256km. With normal drive I can easily do 200km, what is above I have to drive a bit more carefully, but of coure this also depends on conditions (cold, heat, rain...). Normaly I do 140km per day and for that I need about 50-55% of battery (daly drive to work and back, 36km local roads, 40km highway).

Bjorn, excellent video on the importance of battery pack temperature. I will recommend this video to anyone considering buying an EV. Shows the importance and limitation of passive cooling. I wonder how the Golf EV battery pack would do in Spain in the summer months? I will take my infrared gun and check my pack to see if I can notice differences before and after driving. I liked the point that you could see that the car was limiting the charge rate based on the battery temperature at the level 3 chargers.

Hi Bjørn, @12:50 you explain the lane assist, but in this car it seems like the adaptive lane assist was disabled in the car settings menu. If this was disabled, the car swing between the lines and the system only try to avoid crossing the lines. Try again with enabled "adaptive lane assist" and you will see the difference. This feature is also included in my 2015 e-Golf and works really fine.

Makes me want to take off down the road for a day trip. The Soul is charging and almost full. Beautiful day. Will leave in about an hour after I walk the dog. Bjorn, love your videos, your country is beautiful. Reminds me of New England in the fall. Too bad that some city cars with larger batteries don't have active cooling. With more level 3 chargers you want to hit the road but not cook the batteries. I would like to see the temperature of the battery pack on a display in EVs. In the hotter parts of the world that information would be handy.

Had a chance to see both the e-Golf 36kWh & Focus EV 33kWh. In terms of car, the e-Golf is definitely nicer (even the regular Golf is nicer than the Focus) car, but the Focus EV has a slightly smaller battery but has active liquid battery cooling. Still both cars are selling for ~$35k in Canada with incentives makes them cheaper than their gasoline counterparts in certain provinces. The Volt & Bolt/Ampera & Ampera-E ring in at ~$10k more. Seems to be a solid choice given the high range & hatchback flexibility.

BOB I’ve driven them back to back - build quality is better on the Volkswagen. It’s very solid with premium materials inside. Model 3 is still an American car and has a way to go, but is overall the better EV by a landslide.

Hi, Bjørn! Low resistance tyres will always be louder than regular. Some people have even changed wheel bearings because of the road/rolling noise, but real reason was tyres. :D p.s. also this radio has feature (infrared or something) that it follows your hand movement/gestures in the air, in front of it. ;)

Akive battery cooling is a must. I have believed that VW will work together with "Kreisel" in the future. These have developed liquid-cooled Batteries , which connect the contained and rechargeable cells with a laser in a non-destructive manner and thus allow the battery to charge up to 95 percent with highest charging levels.

For a car which is used to travel longer distances? For sure. The ID3 has it. But the golf is a commuter car, which can be used for longer road trips, but it’s out of it’s comfort zone. Everything you put it can break, so if you have active cooling, it costs money and could go wrong. The golf isn’t build for that, and a good passive cooling is good for 1-2 fast charges, that’s 750 km in summer, more than enough for the intended use of this car. It’s like with the leaf: know what you buy and want to do with it. You wouldn’t buy a ultra compact car with a 1 liter petrol engine and expect it to do long road trips very well, or a mercedes full size suv for a small European town. The golf has it’s place for sure, and everybody who bought one i ever talked to loved that thing 😉👍

In germany you can get this car for about 21300€ if you have an old diesel to scrap. This is with basic features, but with this car you do not need to add much, maybe CCS port für 625€ and winter winter tires. list price: 35900 - 4380€ (state bonus) - 5000€ (environment bonus by VW if you habe an old diesel to scrap) - 2380 (future bonus by VW) and you get about 8% discount to the list price. you do not have to negotiate about the bonuses. You can seach online for a dealer that adds the 8% (of 35900€). > 35900*0,92-11760 = 21268

@randallscott-key802
@randallscott-key802 5 жыл бұрын
The e-Golf has the famous German "look" that bespeaks performance. VW has a reputation for building driver's cars that provide excellent road feedback, handling, and power. On the other hand, the Ioniq is significantly larger. I had the Ioniq hybrid and the rear trunk (boot) space is very generous before putting the rear seats down! Also the Ioniq has enough rear seat and leg room for a large adult male - I checked it with my own self. Also, I think Ioniq has a nicely "aggressive" look that is more streamlined than e-Golf. Then there is the warranty which should NEVER be forgotten or discounted. Here in the United States Hyundai's battery warranty is "lifetime" on top of all the layers of warranty. Because Hyundai vehicles have proven to be so reliable and durable, many dealerships here in the U.S. have started offering 20 year, 200,000 mile warranty coverage through their dealership. Obviously if they had to actually honor each and every extended warranty they'd go bankrupt, so yes, it is a marketing ploy, but it's still a valid warranty that's there if you ever need it. Electric cars are very close to "forever" cars except for the battery, and even then, if you only lose about 10% charge at 100,000 miles, these newer electrics with the larger packs will still have decent range.

I think the eGolf has only 310V battery voltage as opposed to 400V, as many others have. This may also affect CCS charging speed, as in most chargers more power would exceed the current (A) limit. Maybe it isn't just the heat that makes charging the eGolf slower than many other cars...

The e-Golf limits the maximum charging speed at 40kW. I tested that on CCS-Chargers with higher current output than 125A.
@matthiasb-punkt3525
@matthiasb-punkt3525 6 жыл бұрын
The voltage is 323V. On a 50kW Charger with 125A, the e-Golf can only load 125A x 323V = 40375VA = 40kW. The "old" e-Golf was able to load up to 50kW on a 165A charger. The new one is completely limited to 40kW because of different cells.

I'm just wondering, why you don't use the VW Navi more. As far as I know it works pretty well in calculating the elevation and the recharge stops in. Thanks for the video documentation of your trip! Keep up the good work!

@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 6 жыл бұрын
The ACC is good. Butt he lane assist was flimsy. Ioniq had better lane assist that also worked through some snow. But the problem with all these (except for Tesla) is that you have to grab the wheel every 5-10 seconds.

I am waiting for my eGolf that I ordered. But I did some test drives. On the Autobahn I find the lane assist very good. On normal roads it is good but has a tens to drive along the middle marking of the road. That is not so good. Never tried the Ioniq. At the moment VW gives you extreme conditions when you give up your old diesel car in Germany. So the eGolf was cheaper than an Ioniq for me.

Three days ago I visited VW and asked the sales person if the new E-Golf has active battery cooling. She said "Yes, liquid cooling". Was she misinformed or do you just don't consider that good enough compared to fans? If she was right, isn't it inaccurate of you to say that it doesn't have active battery cooling? Love your good videos!

It has passive cooling. The new battery pack just uses more densely packed lithium batteries, the case is pretty much the same holding the whole battery pack, which now weighs 4 or 5 kgs more than the 2015 model. Ask your saleperson to demonstrate the active cooling on the new battery pack for you, and where it says so in the owners manual.

Ditched? it's had passive cooling since day 1 when the 2015 e-Golf was brought on the market. The only change in 2017 to the battery is that VW went with newer chemistry higher capacity capable guts in the battery. The weight has increase maybe 8 to 10 pounds, for the 700# battery. www.autoblog.com/2014/03/31/vw-e-golf-will-not-have-active-cooling-system-lithium-battery/ I find it hilarious that all you arm chair car enthusiasts are smarter that Volkswagen. How many car models have you designed, built, sold and warrantied? Zero? I thought so.

Assuming a constant charge rate of close to 40kW at consecutive charging spots, one can determine a 'sweet spot' at about 115kmh, where the total time of travel (travel time for legs plus time for charging) is minimal. Driving slower means longer time on the road and less comsumption, that shortens the charging time, driving faster puts everyhing in reverse. However, due to the heat gate issue speed should be lower that 115 kmh at really long trips, extending beyond 500km or so.

27:30 Is the reason this car is not an option for me and I will keep my Model 3 reservation. Elon would never allow such half-crafted solutions. 10:18 also seems to be in favour of Tesla 11:09 Point to e-Golf maybe, however Bjørn does not say directly whether it's better than a Tesla on wind-noise. 58:39 However it seems that e-Golf has a better headlight system, allowing you to drive with high-beam constantly on. I don't believe Model 3 has a similar system, would like to see this as an option to Model 3 also.

Great video, like your detailed videos! Your the only one actually driving long distance and can compare to different cars. I'm deciding between eGolf and Ioniq, which one would you choose ? Sidenote, eGolf is much more expensive with some accessory.

+Misc Ioniq: + Cheaper + More efficient + Electric driver's seat + Loads of safety and convenience features + Lots of cargo space - No app support - Poor high beams - Preheat only possible when plugged in e-Golf: - Excellent interior quality + Outstanding adaptive headlights + Very good soundproofing + Very good touch screen + Very good instrument cluster + App support for preheating, etc - Limited luggage space - No active battery cooling - Expensive - Slower fast charging speed due to lower nominal voltage

Ok... so, if you drive faster, the battery will heat and you'll take longer to charge. If you drive slower, you can charge faster! Overall, the time spent on a trip will be more or less the same. Right? If so, it's probably better to drive slower, as you'll save the battery and the drive train. Am I thinking right?

Look at how fast you can recharge, and ow fast you can discharge. Energy used = mass x velocity squared. that velocity is squared tell you how much more energy you use going faster.

Another question if you mind. I’m here in canada and there is a dealer that’s trying to get rid of a 2017 ioniq but it’s the entry model which does not have the winter weather package which includes the heat pump. Is there a huge difference in range between the heat pump and non heat pump models based on your experience

Espa was the first petrolstation i stopped at with charging. I tested the app, and what.... A charging station at the back. Problem is that my zero motorcycle only uses Shuko. And the dealer Carpoint dont know how to help me. But they lett me charge in front at the coca-cola cooler at Espa.

I love your road trip videos, but the length does make it kind of hard to keep up with them as well as the other channels I watch. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting you shorten them at all, it's just an observation. Please keep doing things the way you have been. Just be yourself.
