Prompted by the lack of power offered by the 5.56 NATO cartridge used in the M4 carbine and the M16 rifle, the .458 SOCOM came about from informal discussion of members of the special operations command, specifically Task Force Ranger's experience that multiple shots were required to incapacitate members of the opposing force in Mogadishu during Operation Gothic Serpent. Today we take a Lukewarm dive into the ridiculous round.

@cd7up Wouldn't be my first choice for moose, but it would be a great bear gun as it's essentially the same as a 1oz slug from a 12G but more capacity, smaller and more modular. A regular 12G 437gr slug is going around 1600fps, and in 458, you can get a 405gr hardcast going 1675, or a 500gr hardcast or a 300gr copper soild.

Such a pure smile at 6:04 Thanks so much for the video on my 458 SOCOM upper! Not sure why you’re having problems with the charging handle coming loose, but I think it might have to do with me testing using cheap ammo and handloads while you were shooting spicy ammo. Those Aero charging handles have really big wings to grab on to, and those wings might have enough inertia to unlock themselves under heavy recoil. A charging handle with smaller/lighter wings or a milspec charging handle might solve that issue. I’ll see what I can figure out once the upper is back, and either way, I loved the video! The urge to shoot big rocks is real 🪨

So I built a 458 socom using a Sharps warthog lower, a Tromix barrel and bolt for my son when he made Navy Chief. I put a pair of pig balls you can buy as the grip. So after he was rocked at the party he got to open it in front of some of his Chiefs. It was hilarious and cool. The thing about the 458 bolt Tony from Tromix makes the best one. My friend decided to build a 458 as well. He's a former sharpshooter in the military. He was having problems with the bolt he ordered the one from Tromix. He hasn't had a problem it worked perfect. The Tromix bolt is quite a bit more stout. He also builds the combo for a 375. That's going to be my match to my son's. We hog hunt every two years in Texas.

When he said, “sorry, when you’re from Arizona everything looks the same.” I was dying 😂 I remember when Administrative Results was standing on a roof top, I knew exactly what building he was standing on from the angle and size of the Superstition Mountains. I’m born and raised in AZ and that shit was funny.

My personal use case for the big papa AR cartridges (.450 BM, .458 socom, 458 HAM’R) is a dedicated subsonic suppressed hunting round. When you are gated by the speed of sound, the only way to pack more energy is a fatter bullet. A 395gr sub-x or a 500gr maker Rex does just the trick at hitting like a hammer and being hearing safe.

There is some context to why 458 SOCOM is a thing, namely Task Force Ranger's experiences during Gothic Serpent. Needing multiple hits to drop guys. Teppo Jutsu and Tromix came together to make this whacky new caliber for the turn of the millennium with the goal of it just being an upper swap. Using USGI mags and mil-spec parts. You would have a 10.5" upper on your pack and a few mags for those 'just in case' scenarios....... it never caught on..

It was developed for the lead man on a door kicker team. Simple upper switch and you have a 45-70 level power automatic rifle ready to drop tangos where they stand. As with so many other rounds rolling your own along with casting get the cost down to rather inexpensive. Yeah, I have one.

I’m actually glad to see the charging handle reciprocating. I always thought it was just me. I’ve chewed thru so many that I was beginning to think it may be time to either give up on the build or go to something bigger, like the Breach or a Radian. As mush as it sucks, I a little relieved to see it happening to someone else.

Why so long? If I recall correctly, it’s kinda like the 300blk in that it’s meant to have a nearly complete powder burn in roughly 9-10” of barrel

It's designed to be compatible with M4 parts, biggest round that'll fit/feed without swapping magazines, and it's marvelous. You should have shot something besides a gravel and dirt berm so you could see what it can do. Iraqvet8888 or whatever shot dummies through a house 🤷‍♂️

During the pandemic I wanted something that could stop a bear. Shotguns weren’t available but I already had a AR. Came across some hunting videos of the caliber and confirmed it would do the job and continue moving with enough energy to get a collateral. Going on 4 years now and it’s still my favorite caliber. Also the Coast Guard uses 458 SOCOM to shoot the engines of pirate ships and etc.

If memory serves, .458 SOCOM came about from an informal discussion about how disappointing 5.56 was in Mogadishu. Could it be used to blow open an engine block? Ask Kentucky Ballistics. But I think the name of the game here was stopping power

I built a 16" .458 SOCOM 4 or 5 years ago. It was cool for a minute but ended up being a novelty that chills on the wall. Shortly after I built it, I handed it to my buddy with a full mag and the impression that it was my .223 AR. He proceeded to mag dump it into trash and hated every second of it 🤣

I know people have 458 socom because their state banned high capacity magazines and didn’t want to get rid of all their 30 round AR-15 magazines. So they just changed the follower and now they are ten round 458 socom magazines

lol that reciprocating charging handle bopping you in the nose is a nice touch. I put a super cheap ambi on one of mine and took it to a 2 gun match and by the 3rd stage one of the roll pins came out so it couldn't latch anymore. So every shot bopped me in the nose.

?? Poor man's 510 whisper maybe. 300blk has 45acp energy & 8.6blk has 10mm energy but 458 is a gd rimless 45/70, it literally fires a subsonic that clones one of the most popular anti buffalo loads of the late 1800s & weighs considerably more than a 12 gauge slug does. Plus subs retains more % of their speed over distance so @ 500m more energy than 300 win mag.

I have two of them, one AR, one built on a 700 Remington action, I use it for heavy woods hunting for deer, and yes we have bear here too that will sneak up to see what your doing and if you have food for them. I put an adjustable gas key on my bolt and it fixed the reciprocating charging handle.
