When this Lenovo ThinkPad T460s Ultrabook laptop was turned on it would beep twice but do nothing else. After ruling out bad RAM or a bad SSD, I found that it was actually booting into Windows but that the LCD backlight wasn't working.
Thanks for a thread on ThinkPads.com I knew to look on the back of the motherboard for fuse F7 and test its continuity. Sure enough, that fuse was bad. I didn't have a replacement fuse, but soldering a 0-ohm resistor in its place restored power to the backlight. The resistor should burn out pretty easily in the event of a short, so this should be a fairly descent alternative.

Aw, so glad I could help. This video was my very first foray into micro-soldering, and luckily it worked out. This seems to be a somewhat common issue in that laptop series. Hopefully you'll be able to fix yours!

Thanks for a great video. You said that you used a 0-ohm resistor in place of the fuse. Do you know the specs of the fuse that was called for and/or the specs of the resistor that you used? I'm in the western US or I'd send this to you. Had relatives out from Cork two summers ago. Really looking forward to visiting them in a year or so. Thanks in advance.

I'm not exactly sure what either spec is on this one, but here's the thread where I learned about the location of the fuse: forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=130380 There is some discussion about typical fuse ratings (e.g. 3A, 32V, Fast), but again I don't know with certainty if that applies here. I do now have some fast fuses in stock and am tempted to ask the customer to bring it back in so I can put a proper fuse in-place. If I do that, I'll create a new video. :) Also, thanks for your kind words!

I know this was 8 months ago, but the schematic shows that F7 is a 2 amp 32V fuse size 0402, with part number ERB-RD2R00X. A 0 ohm resistor, if it works, probably wouldn't handle as high of a spike, considering that you would need it to handle 64 watts. Since I've never seen a 0 ohm chip resistor with that high of wattage, and this guy was able to get it working with one, it probably doesn't get anywhere near that under normal circumstances, and you would be fine using a 0 ohm resistor.

Hi Sir and many many thanks for sharing all this. if possible please I need an information. I blown a backlight fuse on a ThinkPad T460S replacing the screen and not removing the batt ... As a emergency repair I just short the blown fuse but I want replace it. now I know that is next to impossible to find a identical fuse , but can I use a generic 3A SMD fuse instead? (I`m not in repairing computers but I work in automotive electronics) many many thanks again and all the best

I'm not sure, but I think you could probably use a 3A SMD fuse as a replacement -- any fuse would probably be better than simply shorting the circuit. Sorry I can provide a better answer!

Hi, my lenovo yoga 500 isk has no problems if connected to the power, but if I unplug the backlight does not go anymore, on the motherboard the components are different from this notebook in the video, can you tell me how I can understand where to look, if of are there usually references to watch out for?

Have you tried the recommendations from this page? forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Issue-Display-Lenovo-YOGA-500-15ISK-ok-with-charger-Black-without/m-p/5109790 It does sound like a logical problem (BIOS or drivers) to me, but I can't say for sure. Please let me know what the issue was when you finally do solve it!

Hello, Thanks for all job. I have a T470, and keyboard dont work. I test other keyboard and the problem is the same. Only work, ESQ to F12 and windows key. In bios is the same. Enter and others keys dont work. you can help me?

I can't imagine what the issue is. I would try an external (USB) keyboard, perhaps after disconnecting the existing keyboard connector, to try to determine whether the issue is the keyboard or the motherboard. Aside from that, I'm not sure what to recommend.

I have a t460s board I disconnected the display without disconnecting the battery and blew the fuse...do you offer this as a service?

I'm in Northern Ireland, so it might be cost prohibitive, but otherwise yes I offer this as a service.

Hey, great channel! I have a T460s and would love to send it to you, but I'm in Italy. My problem is the following: the computer started crashing out of nowhere, and after a long troubleshooting process I discovered that without the RAM stick, the computer works perfectly, with the RAM stick in place, it starts to crash again. I tried a new RAM stick but the problem is the same. Seems like either the RAM slot became defective or something software related is not "accepting" the RAM anymore. Could you please give me any hints? Thanks a lot!

Thanks! I suspect a problems like the one you describe will be hard to solve. I'm not sure what the specifications (mainly, the frequency) of the on-board RAM are, but perhaps you could try using a memory module that runs at the same speed as the on-board memory? You might also check the UEFI (BIOS) for any other memory-related settings that might be contributing to the issue -- things like the amount of RAM reserved for graphics, timings, etc. (I'm really grasping at straws here, but these are the things I would try.) Good luck, and when you finally solve the problem, please let me know what was causing it. :)

@@ComputerHelpNIHey, I really appreciate your help. I don't think the RAM speed is the issue because the computer has been working with the same RAM for more than 2 years. I will check the BIOS and will let you know if I solve it. Thanks!

I've never seen an issue like that before. It sounds like it could be a failing inverter, but I honestly don't know what your issue could be. Sorry.

My t460s just stopped working : press power button in momentarily lights the power button green and the backlight keyboard comes on and then two seconds later both go off. No backlight at all. Tried removing batteries , cmos, reset button, will not load bios and shutsdown

To me, that sounds like it could be a corrupt BIOS chip, but the only way to know would be to remove the chip and inspect its contents and/or replace it -- a tricky job.
