CN city era was (in my opinion) the best CN ever was. Just watching all the characters interact with one another was just awesome, peak CN stuff right there.

I was born exactly a month before the CN City Era. Its definitely one of my favorite eras on the Network, while I adore the powerhouse it really showed what network could do by proving its dedication as an animation network. The promos, bumpers, idents and the Friday block will always be amazing. Glad you included Atomic Betty in the thumbnail. Atomic Betty and Totally Spies had a block together during that time.

@@justju0rd For me, I somehow hardly remember CN City, but seeing various Bumpers on KZfaq, I can tell what I somewhat missed out on during my ChildHood. If I was born maybe afew Years earlier, like sometime around the late 1990s, maybe I would've gotten achance to see the CN City Era whenever I got back from School.

CN City is probably the Grooviest Era of Cartoon Network because it reminds me of Toon-Town from Roger Rabbit & House of Mouse. Its funny that it somewhat made a Comeback in Crossover Nexus (featuring KO, Garnet, Raven & Ben 10) when you think about it.

I found an old VHS of my bootlegged Ed Edd N Eddy episodes I recorded using a VCR and the theme was the 2004 City Era with the girl announcer. I was just 9 years old then; sooo much memories

First, let me say, this was well researched and well written. Plus well voiced. Second, while the City Era isn't my favorite, that title will always go to Powerhouse, City is a very close second, along with Checkerboard and Starburst. The variety of programming for the City Era was still on fire like the prior eras that preceded it. The sad part is, some think it's when the channel went into seasonal rot. That's hardly the case. Seasonal rot on CN began in my opinion in the Yes! era. But, there were some decent hits in that era too. Anyway, I was 14 when City premiered, having grown up with the channel since Day 1.I even remember the early preview (if that's the correct parliaments) bumpers that aired from late May to early June 2004 in the final days of Powerhouse as a sort of soft introduction to City. The only thing I didn't like about City and this is a minor gripe I also have to some degree with Powerhouse was airing [adult swim] daily. Hear me out, I don't hate AS. Not at all, but, I wish it would have been spun off into its own channel with Toonami as a Toonami/[adult swim] kinda thing where you could see Toonami shows all day, and AS programming at night. But, I'm going off topic. While I do remember watching the transition occur, I do kick myself for not recording it, since it was a unique transition. As for the programming, most of what the channel was known for by that time was still there. The Cartoon Cartoons were still kicking, and a handful of classics that hadn't moved over to Boomerang fully yet were still being aired. And some of the blocks were memorable like Lumpus and Slinkman's Cabin Fever and Cartoon Summer. As someone who knows someone who worked at CN and Boom, I've heard that some blocks could have came back, if some of the top brass didn't want to continuously change things to shake it up and keep the channel fresh. Plus, some of the new shows that premiered in the final years of Powerhouse like KND really took off in the City Era and helped further put CN on the map. If I could go back in time, and rewatch CN, honestly, I'd rewatch all four and document as much as I can, because those eras were what made CN so memorable and as someone who leans more toward CN and Boomerang over Disney Channel and Nick, this was an unintentional swan song to what made the channel stand out in so many ways. We eventually got a revival in 2010 with the programming. But, some of the creative magic was lost when City ended. Not a lot to completely kill the channel. But, some. But, I digress...

About the framed CN City image at 6:14... from the looks of it, it seems like it was originally planned for characters from Hanna-Barbera's classic cartoons as well as the Looney Tunes to appear as residents of the city - most likely, this idea was scrapped due to those cartoons being removed or relegated to Boomerang, thus the only characters from those properties to consistently be portrayed as residents were those who still had shows that were rerun on Cartoon Network (Tom & Jerry and Scooby-Doo) or who had new WB-produced spinoff cartoons that they featured in (Duck Dodgers and What's New Scooby-Doo, in addition to the direct-to-video Tom & Jerry and Scooby-Doo movies), though some HB characters did cameo in the Fire Hydrant and Hide-&-Seek bumpers. On a related note, do you know where I can find that image? It's a pretty impressive showcase of all of the cartoons that had aired on CN up to that point!

Cartoon Guy! You've done it again! Excellent retrospective on the City Era, 10 outta 10 discussion and history about 2004 for Cartoon Network! I was 8 years old when this era debuted, I had just finished 2nd grade a few weeks prior and was going to 3rd grade when this era and this new logo was revealed, and not gonna lie, even as an 8 year old, getting used to the new abbreviated logo was strange & awkward, but the programming throughout 2004 was still goated. Megas XLR, Foster's Home, and Justice League Unlimited were my fav shows that debuted this year. Johnny Bravo and Powerpuff Girls still had new episodes + reruns. Dexter's Laboratory showed plenty of reruns in spite already being over. Codename: KND, Billy & Mandy, Ed Edd n Eddy, Duck Dodgers, and Teen Titans were popping off with loads of new episodes as well. Jackie Chan Adventures, Ozzy & Drix, Mucha Lucha, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh continued to show reruns from Kids WB. Fridays was always lit and was the only night left CN was 24 hours! Miguzi kicked off with Code Lyoko, Totally Spies, TMNT (2003), and Static Shock on there. This was the last remnants of Boomerang block for HB reruns and Looney Tunes before those unfortunately moved to Boomerang channel permanently but you still had Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry like you said. I wish Toonami didn't become Saturdays only, but they still had good enough lineups once a week. 2004 was one of CN's greatest years programming wise, and the legacy of cartoons interacting with each other in the bumpers since the Powerhouse era, continued well into the City era with the full CGI presence. I do have to mention this, and I have every reason too. 2004 was one of CN's most controversial years. I'm so glad the RIP CN stopping at 2004 is long gone and outdated on the web. A lot of 80's and early 90's born millennials considered 2004 as the beginning of the end of CN, mainly because of the Hanna-Barbera classics that had been around since the network's launch in '92 being permanently gone or Toonami becoming Saturday nights only rather than being daily, or hell, even some earlier classic Cartoon Cartoons no longer being shown as much on the primetime schedule especially by 2005 & 2006 in place of newer shows like Camp Lazlo or My Gym Partner's A Monkey which weren't well received or as memorable in comparison. I totally understand it's a generational cycle. But to be honest, even if 2004 or 2005 weren't as good as before, what you had in 2004 & 2005, was still a million times better lineup wise and more iconic than anything that would come later on. It was that "you don't know what you had 'til it was gone" mentality. Even if there were a few hiccups here and there in 2004 or 2005, there were WAY more positives overall and way more good programming than the few bad or controversies here and there, which I brought up in my 1st paragraph. CN City forever!! It is still missed. I wish the bumpers didn't last for only 2 years. Latin America had CN City for 5 years which is quite wild. I still get jealous lol.

Don’t forget Saturday/Sunday mornings as well. Dexter’s Lab and PPG however did aired reruns middays or early morning hours depending on the schedule archives throughout much of the city era.

Just imagine if CN City made a comeback in recent Years right now. I know its so impossible for that to happen, since WB is still going through ALOT of rough times since late 2022 because of David Zaslav, but I do hope it does make a comeback since Crossover Nexus. Hopefully everyone understand where I'm getting at right now.

I just wish I could have appreciated being born and raised in the 90s and 2000s back when cable was at its best and kid's channels were in their prime the people in charge of cable these days are idiots who don't know the first thing about creativity or quality.
