Welcome to the JDM Trivia #13!
Update: I have created a video to correct three facts:
• 4AGE History Addendum
Today's trivia is about the 4A-GE. I will give you an overview of all the different 4A-GE models, how to recognize them, what their (basic) differences are and on which cars they were available.
I will skip over the details of the 4A-GZE and the TRD/Formula Atlantic engines as I will do a separate video on those engines.
Link to the Engineering Explained video about why you want to have more valves in your engine head, instead of having bigger valves:
• Why Are 4 Valves Bette...
(Thanks to Adam Forsyth for the correction!)

@HighOnThunder: Thank you very much for taking the time and effort for these corrections! Much appreciated! I have made annotations for these corrections now, but according to KZfaq they will be phased out soon. Also on mobile devices they are not available. So what I'll do it make a follow up video and link to that one.

The Silvertop 4AGE, also came in the Sprinter and Corolla GT Sedans, Corolla Ceres, Sprinter Marino, and the Corolla FXGT hatch, not just the Levin and Trueno. Blacktops also were produced much longer, till at least 2000, and in a few more cars than just the Levin and Trueno. I currently Own a '99 factory AE111 Sprinter GT Sedan (Factory Blacktop & c160 6 speed), an had previously owned a BZ-Touring Sprinter Carib Wagon with the same setup. It also was delivered in the BZ-Touring Corolla Wagon all the way through to 2000. And was also available in the Carina GT.

the best part of your video is when you mention about the 4AGZE Supercharged version of that engine bro it's actually my all time favorite 4AGE engine from Toyota actually really it is because it's boosted up that is exactly why brother and you can definitely make a 4AGZE Supercharged engine from Japan insanely fast it's definitely never funny at all times period bud because I have seen one's that are like 500 horsepower and beyond

what is the best 4 age engine and the most fuel economy engine and what 4 age is the best tuneble engine
@bradcogan8588
@bradcogan8588 5 жыл бұрын
It depends what you want to achieve really. The 20Vs are better as standard but throw any money at any of the 4A-GE engines and your power ceiling is about the same. A good port and polish, some big cams, a good exhaust and up the compression and you can get 180bhp with any of these engines naturally aspirated and upwards if you want to go crazy (see Formula Atlantic 240bhp 4A-GE). Any of these engines will take forced induction on low boost with no issues but if you want to up the boost you'll have to replace a lot of the parts in the naturally aspirated engines. The 4A-GZE is more suitable for higher boost levels but if you want more than 200bhp you'll probably want to replace some of the internals regardless. So in summary: It depends. NA screamer, torquey daily or highly boosted fuel guzzler. If you want to get crazy power and will be replacing the internals and doing lots of work anyway then I would say it doesn't matter (probably avoid the 3 rib blue top). These engines aren't exactly 100% interchangeable though so consider the wiring loom nightmare if swapping from one type to another.
@bradcogan8588
@bradcogan8588 5 жыл бұрын
For fuel economy you'll be best with a blue top or a red & black top (big port 16V with T-VIS) as you get nice low end torque and very good fuel vaporisation due to the asymmetric induction.

No wonder the Japanese tuners used carbs a lot in the beginning the early 4age intake system was complete junk. its a good thing there are better intakes in the after market now so people can use fuel injection. efi all day.

Great, i found only 1 error: 10:26 t-vis is an acronym for Toyota Variable Intake (not induction) system
@banpeinet
@banpeinet 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the correction! However Toyota's official (80s) documentation on the tvis says it stands for induction, not intake: 3sgte.org/page_13.htm I learned thanks to many comments that it's not the intake that changes, but the induction changes do to the increased velocity
@genterasaki86
@genterasaki86 6 жыл бұрын
banpeinet that’s right, even if you take a look at how the engine works you see that it’s the induction that changes, but for whatever reason I always heard that the system is called Toyota variable intake system, probably it’s just a common misconception

@banpeinet

The one that isn't revved over 2500rpm 😆 In all seriousness, these engines weren't made for fuel economy as they were performance engines. My guess the most efficient engine would be the later 20v due to better software

Heeeeeey. the 4afe is still a twin cam. Just a different design
@banpeinet
@banpeinet 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I stand corrected here: it is a twin cam as it has two cam shafts. The major difference with the 4AGE is that the 4AFE has a very narrow angle and it has a single cam gear.

23.30 the formula 1 race engines in the beginning of the 90`s Honda /Renault broke the 200hp/liter !!!!! limit the engine your talking about delivers 100hp/liter , the main reason was ; that the race engines redlined at around 14000 rpm !!

The fourth gen 85 Celica gt you show here did not come with a 4age engine but rather a 3sfe 16v. Which did not have tvis. Only the later 86 up gts/gtr had a 3sge which has the tvis.
@banpeinet
@banpeinet 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the correction. Maybe it didn't come with the 4AGE in the US, but it surely came with the 4AGE (and 4AFE) in both Japan and Europe.
@harisansari6126
@harisansari6126 7 жыл бұрын
Thats not true. im pretty sure no celica ever came with a 4age engine for that matter, earlier gen celica's came with perfered 22R engines some carb some fuel injected. The Celica and Supra Line up never came with 4age engines. Correct if im wrong with a source.
@banpeinet
@banpeinet 7 жыл бұрын
As I said in my reply: maybe they didn't come with the 4AGE in the US, but _outside_ the US they were available. The 22R was not available on a Celica outside the US either. Also I actually owned a Toyota Celica GT-S AA63 in the past, and I'm absolutely certain about it having a factory 4AGE as it was on the firewall plate. If you need a source, please have a look at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Celica#Third_generation_.28A60.3B_1981.E2.80.931985.29 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Celica#Fourth_generation_.28T160.3B_1985.E2.80.931989.29 And if that isn't enough proof, here are the Japanese brochures for the third and fourth generations: www.en.japanclassic.ru/booklets/147-toyota-celica-1981-a60.html www.en.japanclassic.ru/booklets/149-toyota-celica-1985-t160.html

Look, good videos for people new to the 4a engines and good information. BUT it shows you have no idea what so ever about the engines, just online research. I would suggest if you want to make a video, your best source would be people that have built, transplanted and actually have dealt with each of the 4a engines. Good try at a presentation of information that has been available in toyota forums for 15+ years. Next time i need information thats been around for 15 years put into a power point presentation, i will ask you first!!!!!
@banpeinet
@banpeinet 7 жыл бұрын
+micheal alexander Thank you so much for your constructive comment. Look, i didn't say anywhere that I'm a fully fledged mechanic with experience of rebuilding all 4age engines. In contrary: I said this was a primer for people, giving an overview with the differences between each model. If you feel you were deceived by the title because you didn't read the description of this video not listened to the introduction of the video, don't vent that in the comments... About the copying of what is available on the internet: I didn't need to. Most of that information was readily available on AEU86 (which I have been running since 2004), and the additional information from reliable sources (club4ag and Billzilla) and I simply provided what wasn't there yet. Back when I created this video I planned to make follow up videos that are in depth about each and every model. As you may have seen I haven't had the time to create those and I'll surely keep your advice on the back of my mind once I'm going to do so.

@banpeinet
@banpeinet 7 жыл бұрын
