A MASSIVE THANK YOU to Bill Sherwood (Billzilla) for maintaining his 4age website that's a true wealth of information on the 4AGE engine.
Check out MRP for awesome 4AGE performance parts and builds: www.mrpltd.co.nz/
D4A Patreon: / d4a
The 4AGE started it's life in 1983 and was produced until 1998. What does 4AGE even stand for? 4AGE is the 4th revision of the A block. G is a performance cylinder head and E is electronic fuel injection. When it comes to the 4A family, the first members were far less impressive and performance oriented than the 4age, the first engine being the 4ac, which was a single overhead cam 8v carbureted engine outputing around 70hp. The next evolution of the 4A family was the 4AFE which introduced double overhead cams and fuel injection. After this came the 4AGE, which was the performance option for the Corolla, Celica, MR2 and other mid-sized Toyota vechicles of the time. Interestingly enough you can also find the 4age in the GEO Prizm and Chevrolet Nova, which are basically rebadged versions of the Corolla AE92. When it comes to the power output the 4age started with 112hp in it's first generation and ended with 165 hp in it's last generation.
The engine the 4age shares a lot with is the Cosworth BDA. BDA being belt drive a type. It was one of the first racing and production engines to have both cam gears driven by a rubber toothed belt. The 4age was also toyota's first engine to have both cam gears driven by a rubber toothed belt.
This was a racing engine designed in 1969 by Mike Hall for homologation purposes for the Ford Escort RS1600. The original BDA spawned numerous different variants which were very succesfull in many different fields of motorsport.
The 4age has a bore of 81mm and a stroke of 77mm. The bda has an identical bore and stroke. From this we can see that the 4age is a very oversquare design which means it's an engine capable of handling high rpms pretty well. A large bore allows for some nice large valves and in stock form the 16v 4age comes with some healthy 29.5mm intake & 25.5mm exhaust valves. These are also of an identical size on the Cosworth bda. So the 4age is basically a mass produced version of the cosworth bda.
What about tuning? The 4age has been around for more than 30 years so everything posible that you can imagine being done to it, has been done. Everything from Crazy high revving formula atlantic builds to turbos, to twin charging to carburetor conversions to whatever else you can think of..Somebody likely already tried it.
The 4age is a good enggine, and while there are engines from the same era that may have an edge over it when it comes to engineering and performance, the 4age is capable, has undenieable charm, and is perhaps one of the best sounding 4 cylinder engines ever made.
The 4age engine has a total of 5 generations and you can sort of tell them apart by the valve covers. But that is honestly very unreliable and you can't really tell what's inside a 4age until you actually take it apart.
Remember how we said the A series engine had more generations after the 4a? An important one is the 7afe engine. It was a 1.8 liter with the same bore as the 4age but a larger 85.5mm stroke, and good way of getting more torque from the 4age, both in NA and forced induction modes is to take the 7afe a block and 4agehead and build something called a 7age. However there is also something called a 9age. This is a total frankenstein of an engine that boosts the 4ages displacement to 1.9 liters and is capable of serious power, especially if you go for the 20v valve cylinder head, which has a narrover intake angle compared to the 16v.
9age you need parts from 4age (16v/20v), 7afe block, 1zz/2zz crank, 2zz connecting rods (con-rods) and custom pistons. For this guide I'm going to assume you all ready have a stock 4age 16v and we will start building from there.
If you're interested in this engine, a company called MRP in New Zealand is basically a sort of a 4age mecca and they can build one for you. It will not be cheap but it will be insane. MRP can also build basically any kind of 4age for any kind of application you need.
So to sum it up, the 4age is a good, small reliable and capable engine. It's short and it's a great swap into older toyotas and any other light cars! It is outdated and squeezing very large power figures from the 4age will take a lot more effort and money than getting those same power figures from more modern iconic engines such as the 2zz or Honda's K series for example. That being said it's novice frienldy engine that is still relatively plentiful and it's fun and easy to tune and work with. The sound it makes is the icing on the cake.

There was 1 truly great engine builder in new Zealand he is Lynn Rogers and manon racing is kind of second to him . Lynn gets and has the formula for 220hp 4age red tops carburetors on side draughts and that's 220hp at the wheels he is old school and was building escorts in the 70s 80s 90s etc I'm not taking anything away from Barry (barry manon) but Lynn's motors are 4ages from top to bottom they are truly awesome and he deserves a mention in the comment section he has retired but his shops still there on Vincent street in howick

Fans of initial D or not, I would like to point out that the 4AGE that Bunta put in Takumi's 86 after the original blew out WAS from the Formula Atlantic race cars. @@yuotosaka9092 go for a turbo charged K20 conversion 😎 I'd never buy a 1,6L turbo. I own a opel/vauxhall astra H with 2.0 turbo and it produces 200horses stock. I could easyly add 50Hp on stock engine without reliability issues. And its allready pretty fun to drive. But you want more over time... and so im currently a 2nd block with forged internals and it will output 400-420 horses. But this year i'm gonna start with a mild 300hp software to get used to the behaviour like torque steer and upgrade the suspension to handle all that torque. What i'd like to say is: you need a bit of displacement to create exhausgasflow. A modified 1,6L turbo is flat AF innthe low range and as soon as it reaches boost you'll fight the wheelspin. With more displacement not only the turbo gets spooled earlier but the engine also has more torque below boost level. So the everyday drivabillity is wayyy better with a bit of displacement then with a tiny engine that relies 100% on the turbo-torque. As soon as the turbo will be bigger it would not spool at 2000-2500 but more like 3000-3500. And that is the problem. Now you have all the top end power and high numbers but cant get of the line because you have to wait till the engine revs to 3500 rpm. Nobody wanty that in an everyday car. The least for light cars in my opinion is 1,8L - better 2.0L. 2,5L is about perfect for up to 400 horses with perfect low end grunge and can reach 500hp with a bit of a loss in the low end. 1,6L cant get much past 200hp without major losses in the low end. If your fine with that (for ever! ) you should consider the 1,6L class.

Great work, very entertaining. One thing I would have added is the different chassis/models that used 4A engines, it would be very useful for someone researching parts and cross-references for a project, and it would give everybody a good idea of what you can put this engine into without any chassis modifications. After all it is one of the, if not the only engine that was used in every configuration, FF, FR and RR, with the added choice of going 16V or 20V.

When I had my MR2 I built what I called the mid-port 4AGE. I used a large port head and a small mort manifold. I partially filled in the floor of the ports in the head to match the floor of the port on the manifold. I them widened the intake ports to match the big port head, which required filling in the open area on the outside of the manifold. Milled it all on a borrowed Bridgeport mill. I really liked the way it ran, better than the small port engine did.

The Toyota Corolla RXI was my first car.I really miss how that engines screamed all the way up to 8000 rpm.It was also a bulletproof engine.I had an accident and they didn’t put oil in the engine after repair and I drove around for 2 weeks without oil.No damage.

On the cooling, I had a 1985 Corolla FXGT. Could thrash it everywhere and never moved off 3/5th's on the Temp gauge. Sit in traffic for 45 secs and would overheat. Changed hoses, thermostat and radiator cap, didn't fix it. Mechanic said only other thing it could be is coolant pump, but didn't make sense as it should overheat all the time. I got a junkyard pump and pulled off mine. The impeller blades had rusted down to stubs all the way to the shaft. When I showed the mechanic, he was so impressed with the cooling system he asked to keep the rusted pump to show others.

My previous car was a Corolla Seca SX with the 4AGE and it was a blast to drive. I never modded it over the 7+ years I owned it and I thought the car handled OK. Then I bought an Integra TypeS which was a night and day difference in handling and frankly I'm surprised I even survived some of things I did in that SX... I'm still daily driving that TypeS 14+ years later, also still largely un-modded, it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I loved that 4AGE engine but the K20Z1 is amazing.

I owned a 4AGE BlackTop with 20 valves, or rather a Toyota Corolla GT(AE111) with 6 speed gearbox, second hand from Japan, built in 1997. Car already totalled in 2005, had owned it for some 18 months. The engine had some weaknesses in terms of performance for me as a user, between 2500 ~ 4000 RPM there was a black spot if you were above 4th gear. For sure its an Iconic engine. As for the sound, it sounded more like a Yamaha motorcycle engine when floored.

You make Great videos! Love engines that REV high. In this configuration normally "under square" as bore is more than stroke to keep piston speed in check. The 2ZZ-GE engine is my favorite...but has longer bore than stroke (under square)....I am biased as I recently rebuilt from terrible to show class and installed in my MR2/S. It is strange to ignore the red-line on the MR2/S tach as engine is good for 8,200 RPM safely. BEST mass produced engine in my opinion: The Honda "K" series. Will not re-power the MR2/S, but the 2.0 at 9,000 RPM is attainable for a daily driver without big expense. Mr. P
@LSmiata
@LSmiata 4 жыл бұрын
EDIT: Over square larger bore vs stoke, 2zz is "under square" Honda 2.0 K series is "square" at 86 x 86 mm (1.0 bore to stroke) 2zz-ge Toyota/Yamaha "under square" at 82mm bore at 85mm stroke (.965 bore/stroke) 1zz-fe Toyota 79mm bore at 91.5mm stoke (.863 bore/stroke)

ben bowers pretty cool but only you missed is the AE92 Supercharged engine. read in Over Rev! Manga, Ryoko Shino she just killed the 4AGZE engine the stock engine of the AW11 Supercharged. Cause in the Over Rev! Manga, she put a new engine in her AW11, which is AE92 Supercharged Engine. It was originally stock engine of 1989 Toyota AE92. And then after she put the AE92 Supercharged Engine in her AW11, Ryoko Shino turn the ignition on her car and it worked. I read in the Mangakalot.com in Safari.

I did the 20v head swap on my 87, it's relatively low budget, and they have 20v swap kits that are way cheaper, more reliable (if you have a low km/mile engine) and even easier to install as it comes with a guide. Also comes with camshafts and other high performance goodies.
