This is my exact procedure since I've been transitioning and still do all the time unless I'm wearing braids. Currently 22mths post. For me I've noticed I only get flaking from using way too much gel the initial styling. So I just use it in moderation and get the same results. By day 4 I just spritz hair, smoothe some moisturizer and oil on the top of hair, smoothe some gel on the flyaways and tie hair and it's brand new for some more days. By day 7 I take down the hair and properly moisturize the inside of the hair then back in a bun until wash day, and my wash day is every 2 weeks. Easy maintenance and low manipulation for me as a transitioning chick. *MY TIP: Release hair tie at night a bit then loop again to tighten in the morning since this style will be kept for a prolonged period and we want to save our edges*

Section it and put the hair ties in. My 4c hair is to my collar bone but with shrinkage it looks about 4 inches long so I feel your hesitation with gel. I learned to put my hair in 3 sections for side part start with the back gel it put it in a loose pony. Go to the other side repeat other side repeat. Mousse and then tie your hair down. The mousse at the end softens the edges a bit so if you want to relay after it dries it isn’t rock hard. Good luck Sis ⭐️✊🏾👑😊
