How to replace the power steering fluid and fluid filter on a BMW E23. A similar procedure may also apply to other BMW models of this generation such as an E24 and E28, this particular car is a 1984 733i equipped with an M30. I’ve already replaced the pressure reservoir for the brake booster and I do have a tutorial for that, so if you’re seeking more info, be sure to check out that video. #BMW #oemtools #bmw7series

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-power steering fluid
-new power steering fluid filter
-drain pan
-22mm wrench
-crush washer
-mechanic's magnet
-standard screwdriver
-8mm wrench
Procedure:
I will be removing the pressure relief valve to drain the system. If you are encountering power steering issues with your car, this could be a possible culprit. A 22mm wrench is required, being behind the pulley it doesn’t allow enough space for a ratchet. Be careful so you don’t damage the starter threads, there is a spring behind this cap, keep the pressure on the cap when removing. Remove the spring in behind the cap. Then the pressure relief valve should slide out too. Allow the fluid to drain.
Turn the steering wheel to help push any fluid out, pump the brakes to push the fluid out of the brake booster reservoir. Do not start the engine, you can cause pump damage when there’s no oil in the system. Remove the screen strainer. Use a standard screwdriver or pry too on each side of the clip, then with light leverage on the edge of the reservoir, slide the clip up and gently work it past the threaded portion.
Lift out the screen. Remove the retaining clip holding down the spring and filter. Slowly twist this up, off the center shaft. Remove the spring and use a magnetic to remove the cap over the filter. Finally is the filter.
Install the filter. I gave the cap a clean with brake clear and a clean rag, then it gets installed as well. The spring was also cleaned, then install this too. Finally install the clip. If the clip doesn’t stay in place, you may need a new replacement. To reinstall the pressure relief valve, push the valve back into place first, then installed the spring, and finally the cap with the new crush washer, then tighten.
Back up to the reservoir, the screen was also cleaned. This was cleaned using brake cleaner. Make sure the gasket is in good shape and replace if needed. Put this into place. Install the retaining clip into place.
Add fluid, this car used the Dextron version which is a red color. I haven’t been able to find the exact capacity unfortunately, from what I found it’s about 2.4 litres or 2.5 quarts. Make sure the fluid level is even with the bottom of the screen, there will be air in the system so the fluid level will drop. Removing the fuel pump fuse or relay, this will allow you to turn the engine over, rotating the power steering pump helping push some air out of the system.
Turn the wheel left to right, lock to lock multiple times with the engine off, this will help with removing some air from the system too before starting the engine. Add fluid as needed.
Start the engine, then continue to operate the wheel multiple times full lock each way both right to left. Do this at least four times or when the fluid level stops dropping. Added fluid when needed again, it should be below the level of the screen so you’re not running the system low.
Pump the brake pedal, this is a hydraulic assisted system instead of a vacuum. When pumping the pedal, make sure it doesn’t overflow over the reservoir. When it comes close to the top, stop pumping, let the fluid level lower, then continue the same procedure again.
Add fluid if needed, keep pumping the pedal until all the air is gone. Turn the vehicle off and now is checking the fluid level. Do this while the fluid is still hot. Pump the brake pedal at least 10 times, until the fluid stops rising and this will be your final fluid level. If there’s too much fluid, use a turkey baster or suction pump to remove the access fluid. The final level should be 10mm or 3/8” below the top edge of the reservoir. Install the reservoir cap tighten the retaining nut and inspect the system for any leaks.

Thanks for this video and all your E23 vids. I have found very useful. Could I ask a quick question please? Should all E23s have a vacuum pump? Mine does not!

No problem, happy to help! They do not, they have a vacuum reservoir under the windshield cowl.

Thank you. So I guess then that the ping-pong balls under the cowl hold enough vacuum to not need a pump? My search for why I have no heat in my cab continues! Keep up the great work 👍

Thank you. Yes that'll hold enough vacuum. With age though, the actuators under the dashboard will stiffen up and not work properly. Mine currently has an issue where most of the air is being pushed at the defroster vent.

Hey, great video. Do you know where to purchase a new retaining clip that holds the spring down in the power steering reservoir? I can't find the part number on RealOEM or anywhere else.

Awesome DIY video instructor. I have a clean 1990 BMW e32 3.5 L self leveling rear shocks attached to hydraulic system. My reservoir is taller, I assume because more fluid needed for self leveling shocks. I wasn't aware that there is a filter in bottom of reservoir on this model. Anyway, the pump or system started screeching a few months ago, so I parked her. The pump has leaked for years, but since I didn't drive that much, I delayed getting a new pump & just kept fluid topped off. Now, replaced the pump & there is still a noise as if the pump is straining to get fluid, like a old type automatic transmission that had a fluid filter in it that was dirty. I will take ur instructions on bleeding the system, & see, but I wonder if this reservoir on e32 735 il has a filter in the bottom of tall reservoir?

Thank you so much! Best to check out realoem.com, they provide great parts diagrams and you'll be able to see if your car has a filter. I would assume it does. I had a 94 E32 740i, but no self levelling. Definitely make sure all the air is bleed too, it'll cause whining.

Can I reuse the washer, bolt, spring and everthing on the servo pump bolt? I cant seem to find replacement
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 2 жыл бұрын
You can reuse the bolt and spring, but the washer should be replaced. It's a crush washer so it only has a one time use. You can get a kit of crush washers with various size. Or take it into a hydraulic supplier or farm equipment dealer, they'll be able to match up the size.

Quick question man, do you think this procedure might help Lessing the little play on the steering wheel I have a slight play and it’s annoying. I have replaced the steering box once but same problem. TBH I used to use normal power steering fluid until of recent I changed to ATF same as the one you used on this vid. However I did not perform the tune up like this. I just flushed the system and fill the thing right up. My life🤦🏾‍♂️ I’m starting to think it’s something to do with the hydraulic system or performing exactly what you just did. Idk.if this sounds dumb my bad Ps.tried adjusting the nut on top of the box, but it only makes the steering wheel harder and uncomfortable to maneuver. I drive an 87 535i

Have you inspected the other steering components such as bushings, tie rods and steering wheel shaft? I can't remember off the top of my head, but there maybe a spline for the telescopic steering and a u joint, both can also wear out. Fluid won't affect play in the steering, it only affects the ease of use. If the pump is whining, then there could have been damage from air in the system.

Did this have a big impact on how heavy you're steering wheel felt?

Maybe a touch lighter. The initial reason for the fluid change was due to the accumulator being replaced. The old fluid was fairly clean.

@@4DIYers How can I tell what I need for my 1985 e23? The PO I bought it from seems to have used ATF, but the system is leaking heavily, and the steering itself feels semi-heavy continuously. There's definitely some assistance going on, it's just heavier than I'm generally expecting.

Check realoem.com to get a part number. Sometimes you can type BMW with the part number in Google and you can find local suppliers. I believe I bought mine from Pelican Parts, bought it a couple years ago and just didn't have time to do the replacement.

@@4DIYers in Europe (Poland, Germany) is not available in BMW. As i heard it is also possible to clean the filter with break cleaner.

You should be able to clean it, either with brake cleaner or let it soak in a wax and grease remover, then use an air compressor to blow it out.
