This is my favourite kind of David Shapiro video. I found this channel when stressed about the 4th Industrial Revolution and it is helpful to think about the potential positives. I think one of the challenges we have in Western civilization right now is an intense pessimism and cynicism. You need a positive vision of the future to work towards, not only pitfalls to avoid.

Great content, as always. 😊 You mentioned the IS-OUGHT problem. In one sense, the "IS - OUGHT" problem was solved thousands of years ago. The biggest IS is What am I? Who am I? Over thousands of years many great spiritual masters and sages have explored these questions (using all kinds of meditation practices and psychedelics). And, it seems to me, what they discovered is that a big part of what we truly are is Connection. Our true nature is connected to all life, this beautiful Earth and this amazing Universe. So they discovered that what they fundamentally ARE is this universal web of connection. All of life and the whole universe is One connected body of divinity. This is the deepest IS. And if all of life, all people and this Earth is just part of my real body, then how should or ought I to treat it? With wise loving compassion, of course. Just as if my foot gets hurt I'll quickly do what's needed to fix it. If a person sees ALL people as equally part of their family, then they'll work to keep that family well and happy. So that's one way that OUGHT can easily and naturally arise from what IS. So what IS and what OUGHT becomes deeply intertwined. But the trick is to do sincere inquiry and discover our deepest IS-ness. So, another way to phrase it: our most important OUGHT is to discover what we really IS.

One way to explore human activity in a post scarcity, post labor world is to look at how wealthy people spend their time. People who don't need to work to have a very comfortable life. What do they do all day when they have full freedom of choice about what they do? How many wealthy people complain about nothing to do or a meaningless boring life? Maybe some, but I would argue few or very few.
@carlhealy
@carlhealy Ай бұрын
A visceral reaction to the idea of the value of human labor going to zero is due to privilege evaporating with inequality of the value of labor. Possessing valuable skills is the means by which higher performers in society segregate themselves away from dysfunctional behavior. I live in the nice part of town because I make a disproportionately large amount of money. It is easy to justify. In some future scenario where I have nothing of value to offer society, why do I live in the nice part of town as opposed to some other place? Furthermore, I'm of the opinion that our liberal ethical sensibilities exist BECAUSE they are conducive to greasing gears and getting along with one another within the current paradigm. We're all about to be figuratively stripped naked before everyone else and then we have to figure out how to behave. I doubt everyone will universally decide to respect the "rights" and dignity of everyone else and agree to get along non-violently. The idea is frightening, which explains the desire to cognitively hide from it.

I think a lot of the mindset around work is societal conditioning and corporate institutionalisation. A lot of people seem mentally blocked to self-reliance and independence, completely locked into a job and work being a less desirable necessity for living, seperate and detached from life. Transitioning to independence is a completely different mindset. The notion of work changes to the notion of contribution to betterment and societal benefit, where fulfilment is derived. There's no distinction because all aspects of life are rewarding. Life feels more like an art work where (for lack of a better word) jobs and tasks are brushstrokes. Sure, it's not all rainbows, there's stress and suffering, but, it's stress and suffering that's done for yourself to make the artwork truly pop. Not being able to contribute meaningfully would be more of a concern, for me personally anyway. - Come to Perth WA Shap, you'll love

Embracing such a lifestyle often leads to both an extension of healthspan and lifespan. By adopting habits that prioritize wellness and longevity, individuals can experience a significant enhancement in their overall quality of life. This includes not only enjoying more vibrant and fulfilling years but also promoting mental and emotional well-being. When people prioritize their health and well-being, they tend to lead happier and more fulfilling lives, fostering a sense of contentment and satisfaction that enriches every aspect of their existence.

A few years from now they will have to anyway, but it's still sad to see so many people being so passionate about denying that think you're delusional or idiotic for thinking about a bright future, when I all see is the natural order of things. Technology has always shaped reality. Just because you can't imagine what the future will look like , it doesn't mean it won't happen. Taking care of your body and health has been touted as "just optional" for too long. Anyone in the pro fitness/health fields, like myself, will tell you taking care of all this at the top level is a full-time commitment that most with today's work structure simply cannot manage. I look forward to a wave of health/fitness being possible at the same time epigenetics chugs along and actually churns out some real life-lengthening treatments/supplements until we have our multi-century healthspans or maybe even that infinite reset possibility. Happiness SHOULD rise with this stat since the literal biological vehicle through which we experience life will be in perpetually better condition.

Perhaps the deep, visceral response is a subconscious knee jerk to the thought that they will have to start back at square one, after they have expended so much energy finding their niche in the current system. It was probably hard enough for them to get comfortable moving the checker pieces of their life, and now AI comes along and flips the table. It’s hard to let go of how far they have gotten in their game, let alone refocus and realize the game has changed to chess, or go, or Candy Land, or DnD, or Hell Divers, or whatever we want. The whole thing is dizzying and I don’t blame them for balking at the sudden jolt.

Not having to work is a problem for many for multiple reasons. One is, at least when I was long you always here if you get old, stop working you die. At this stage in life and how the media is, I almost feel like they pushed that to make people subconsciously want to work forever. Me personally I would be 100% fine if I didn't work a standard job, I like to make video games and while I spend crazy amount of hours working on it, much of it not fun, I still enjoy doing it. I think having a UBI where we all get what we need to live, but having the option to work, be it like me or artist, thinkers would work. I would have the ability to work more and have more than someone who just doesn't want to work, but I can do it on my time and wont need the stress of not being able to feed my family.

One path to making the "Winner's Club" more inclusive was suggested by Andrew Yang in his presidential bid in 2020. If you need to take a capitalism-based perspective to get Americans to buy in, we could simply decide that all citizens are EQUAL shareholders in the country's value and infrastructure. Corporate profits would need to be taxed more effectively (probably through a VAT) and from those proceeds all citizens would receive periodic "Dividend" disbursements. This UBI would be meaningless to the wealthy, but mean everything to those who are currently among the poor.

Most people are living in a state of fear of change. Even in a destitute situation the change that is coming with AI makes people more fearful since seeing a benefit from it is (in their perspective) highly unlikely and most likely will be another point of conflict in extracting resources from their lives. My job could be eliminated right now from AI, ( if I had a small team to lay it out it would be incredibly easy to eliminate 90% of out service staff within a month) luckily it will not happen very soon. I have no other options & UBI would not even come close to paying my basic bills (school tuition alone is $1500 per month) So I see how the fear of the unknown income future makes people very resistant to the benefits that the upcoming AI evolution could entail.

It's not uncommon for individuals to feel unsettled when the notion of a future where less work is required is brought up. Many worry about the implications of a society where the traditional demands of jobs are no longer as prevalent. They express concerns about the potential void that could arise, fearing a lack of purpose or meaningful activities to occupy their time. This apprehension stems from the deep-seated belief that work is central to one's identity and sense of fulfillment, and the prospect of its diminishing role can evoke feelings of uncertainty and unease about the future.

@@minimal3734 Absolutely agree. It's refreshing to see someone embracing the idea of slowing down and prioritizing what truly matters. Our bodies and minds deserve that attention, especially in a world that often glorifies hustle culture. Keep spreading this positive message!

Maybe we should just invent "religions" so we can start "churches" which are really just social clubs that benefit from tax exemption...
