I have a few Rolex watches, Daytona steel, Daytona 18k yellow gold, black ceramic GMT and a TT GMT ceramic, explorer 2, Kermit, and a milgauss white dial. While I love all of them just recently was in a business trip in Montevideo, Uruguay and saw one at the window of the only Rolex AD in Montevideo. I must say that when it was released in 2016, I had mixed feelings. After seeing it in person, I had to have it. Now it is my favorite Rolex and I love that it is like nothing else out there. It is sporty but at the same time is elegant. I wear it with my suits all the time and I have gotten more compliments on it that my other Rolex watches. And odd duck destined to be a classic years down the road.

Looks so much better in person. Modern look so I think some purists or old people don't like it. I love it and bought one.

I'm a proud owner of this watch. the watch is heavy , good on the wrist, beautiful watch . bracelet wears amazingly comfortable. since I have own this watch. I haven't seen anyone with this watch but me. which makes me very special. the lumen is good. I agree with a lot only the hands and 12 hour marker is lume which is a a little set back. but besides that. very very cool watch. the yellow crown and green Rolex writing . it's the only Rolex with this . further more. it's the only colour you will see on the building of Rolex

I have one and love it , I have a Rolex GMT 2 as well but wear the Air KIng mostly . It's a marmite watch for sure love it or hate it .....but reserve judgement the video and pictures do not do it justice see one in the flesh and I think you may well just be persuaded of it's merits ,....... Love it. I’m a Pilot and I need the time - but I use the second markers too. I love the watches horological history too. The RAF used this watch in 1940.

I bought this model a couple of weeks back , yes the dial at first appearance is a messy /over busy or some even say designed by committee BUT when you get one in your hands and examine it , it really is not so bad , I like it the more I wear it , it's an everyday beater watch for me will last forever keeps excellent time with Rolex's new + _ 2 secs per day . I have the Rolex GMT2 with ceramic bezel and it's not as accurate . I would urge doubters to view one in person don't just view pics or video reviews . At £4150 UK I think it's a good buy and will be a future classic . If over £4k for a watch could ever be considered "value" great review by the way keep them coming :)

so true, very stunning in person. Old farts like datejusts and datedates, this watch has a modern appeal with a classic Rolex touch. I am glad Rolex is finally trying some new ideas.

When I first saw it I didn't really care for it, but it's starting to grow on me. I imagine if Rolex eventually announced it's discontinuation that a lot of current naysayers would be complaining and clamoring for one. It looks pretty good on your wrist, but it sounds like you're not enamored enough to actually keep it. If in doubt get rid of it and stick with something you really love. Just my thought on the matter.

Great review on a great watch. Like others I thought it was cool when it came out, but when I saw it in person I loved it. So glad I picked one up. On the wrist it just looks great. Dresses up, dresses down, no bling and just has great pop. Very playful Rolex and I love the fact that it is so unique. I like the fact that I see few others right now. They are popping up and I think that will continue. You see it in person and that's that. It was for me and I love it.

it is 40 vs 39mm of the new explorer (1), anti magnetic... looks more unique , hence i think is an excellent alternative to Explorer .

Nice review. Would have to see it live for true comparison, but think my preference would be the recent explorer reference.

The Explorer isn't a dive watch either, yet it gets fliplock security, and that's something that I love about it. As for AirKing '16, I've always been rather indifferent as to the looks, but it does look great on your wrist.

Great review, the dial is divisive for sure but if it was not different then it would look like an Oyster Perpetual or an Explorer.

Really like the look of this watch - my favourite looking Rolex. Oozes quality but practical and not ostentatious. Enjoy!

Does the crown on the crown line up straight?

Can someone please tell me, where does the information that the numerals 3, 9 and 9 are white gold, come from? I've read it and seen it on so many watch magazines and videos, including this one, and if you go to Rolex Official website, there is absolutely no mention that there is any white gold on the dial of the new Air King. Just wondering....

Just got mine yesterday... i love the dial, took me a year to finally appreciate it...can be dressed up or for weekends. I beleive the 3,6,9 white gold indices are used on the Air King due to Rolex replacing the 3,6,9 indices with luminated ones on the Explorer 212470, giving Rolex a bunch of unused WG 3,6,9 indices... i personally love that extra little bling and the phantom effect they produce on the dial when viewed at various lighting conditions. I like the lume... i think Rolex was going for elegance here in terms of the lume.. Had lume been applied on the 5, 10 - 55 the lume would have made a more toolish.. but thats just my two cents anyway...If the Air King does not sell well, Rolex may discontinue this version of the Air King once the WG 3,6,9 indices meant for the Explorer 212470 runs out.... maybe replacing them with luminated ones or different dial design since it did not sell well? This Air King may have future collector potential... Fingers Crossed.

IMO the flip lock is really not a big deal. Consider what its for. A pilot, sitting in a cockpit for hours, not moving is using this. Why include a flip lock? Its not necessary. Compared to divers, explorers and other sporty models its not needed.

I think this could be a future collectors item because of the cornet being yellow and Rolex in green, a first I believe. Saying that it depends on production run and you never can tell. I agree it's good to see Rolex breaking it conservative mould.

thanks for the excellent review. I actually liked this when I first saw it but not so much now. I can't stop thinking that the design was a clever way to use the leftover 3,6 and 9's from the previous model explorer😂 Also, I love the look of the original air kings so disappointed they didn't just enhance that with a modern 39mm version.

I really wish it didn’t have the 3, 6, 9 however i haven’t seen it in person ....

I would buy one if: - Bracelet was a twin clasp - Numerals were the same font and lumed - Power reserve was 70hrs Maybe the next generation will offer what is needed for me to add to my collection.

I can only dream for now... One day, I guess ( of course they'll discontinue it as soon as I have the money!!!).

Personally I really dislike the dial of the Air King and I would rather buy something lesser known and better valued (for example for the 5000 GBP the Air King costs I would rather buy a Sinn *and* a Nomos) but there is no accounting for taste! I have a 41 mm date just and a 90s sub and a vintage gmt which like an idiot I restored many yrs ago but in doing so lost most of its value No one even notices these watches when I wear them but when I wear my air king questions and compliment me all the time. I must admit it looks strange on videos and pictures but when you wear this watch you will quickly have a love affair with it and never want to wear anything else It’s so interesting and enjoyable to wear

What a mishmash of a design. Horrible! Why the minute markers? Replace them with batons and you have a lovely watch.

It's ugly in photos. It's ugly in person. Busy. Too many colors. Why base the rebrand of the Air King on your worst watch (the Milgass)? I love the 34mm white dial Air King 9-6-3 model. I really had hoped that the new Air King would be just a larger version of that one. Not a fan of black watches in general except for formal dress wear.

It’s ugly, you can’t read the time easily, as the dial is confusing , plus it’s a heavier watch which makes it less comfortable on wrist. Rolex Explorer 39 mm is way classier, a minimalist look and practical,as you can read the time at a glance. This is yucky, definitely not for me.
