Hi Batesy. Since I first started going to the bush as a kid nearly 60 years ago we always carried a half dozen postie whistles with a lanyard. Everyone just wore it around their neck and as kids we were taught to blow it if were lost. Cheap but highly effective means of communication for all ages and works despite terrain and weather conditions. Teach kids and newcomers to blow the whistle if they get separated from the group.

@@rossdrayton5476 G'day Ross, Thats wicked info mate. Something so simple, and could very well save your life for sure. A whistle blowing will carry a lot further than trying to yell out for help. Great reply and feed back mate. Cheers Batesy.

Great advice young felah,l must admit it takes a lot of planning when you plan to travel In the outback and most Ozzies seem to have good knowledge of the bad outback conditions. Vehicle condition and breakdown plan is most important as well as medical conditions. If these requirements are not addressed,save the time of the rescuers and don't go.

Put condoms into your first aid kit, yes I'm serious. They have many applications for wound dressing. Great for covering a cut or burn etc after it has been cleaned, applied cream or ointment. Gravel rashes or scratches. Obviously don't use flavoured one's. You can use them in many first aid situations.

Great clip - thanks Tim. Re spare parts: worthwhile noting that, even if you don't know how to change them yourself, having the right parts can make it much easier & faster for a mechanic to change the on your trip.

Can I add No.11 load your 4WD up roughly to how it will be loaded before you head off including your trailer/camper if you are taking one ( weigh that to ) , make sure your 4x4 has full fuel & if you are taking others try and get some approx weights both of your pax ( passangers) & their luggage that they will be bringing then take your 4WD ( & for peice of mind and so you know what ever you might be towing) to a public weigh bridge & weigh it, assuming you are not already over, add in any other non presant weighs remembering that 1L of diesel weighs 0.832kg & work out what your total weight is likley be & compare thar to your vehicle's Allowable GVM. The GVM is The gross vehicle weight rating, or gross vehicle mass it is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers & cargo but excluding that of any trailers. On avarage a trailer/camper adds approx 10% of its total weight to the vehicle's weight. (A) it is ilegal to drive an over weight vehicle of any type anywhere at any time in Aust. (B) If you have an accident & it is proven that being over weight caused or contributed to the accident you will void your insurance & could face police or other road authority legal charges. (C) You risk breaking your vehicle by asking it to do more than it was legally & mechanically built for. So If your trailer/camper weigh in @ 1000kg's ( 1 ton) then expect that to add approx 100kg's to the vehicles overall weight. Also you need to check the towing limitations if you are travelling interstate N$W have just recently passed legislation that any anything towed in that state MUST be legally registered you cannot just use the registration of the towing vehicle or similar & anything that is 751kg's or over MUST have brakes on at least 1 axle & so on the legislation goes as the weight increases, in N$W you are speed limited to max speed of 100km's p/h even in a 110km/ph zone if you are 4500.01 kg's & must also pass over N$W weigh bridges. We've had our company vehicles ( XLT RANGERS TOWING ) pulled into Broadford & weighed as well as in NSW including on portable scales that are towed around by the roads authorities. All our vehicles are weighed before they leave the office to head anywhere if they are loaded for any work or a particular trip especially interstate & especially N$W. Also another red hot tip if travelling into N$W you need to get upto speed on their new registration plate display legislation ( your vehicle can be pur off the road on the spot & considered unregistered if it does not meet N$W new strict registraion display legislation, then there is their new mobile phone placement and usage legislation in both cases it could end up being a very costly trip otherwise. I wonder how long it will be before we see check points back on the boarder crossing once again like we used to have many years ago. NSW is not called N$W for no reason. Better still just stay in Vic 😊 Rgs Wayne

@@timbates4wdadventures pleasure Tim I & our employees have been on both the Broadford & various N$W Scales a few times now. I shits me what i see some people towing with clearly under rated towing vehicles or how I see some people especially in 4WD's loaded up, sorry but they deserve to be done, I've seen many boats, caravans, trailers, campers & vehicles all unloaded on the side of the road at a portable scale point or at a weigh bridge trying to get down to legal weight. What ever yoy have to unload in N$W just stays on the side of the road or at the scale / weigh bridge site. As for all the new N$W legislation on mobiles & number plate placement I'm just trying to get the word out there 1000's of people a day are being done.

Thx Wayne. Great information. After reading your comments, on the weekend I weighed my 2013 DC Hilux. With me in it plus all recovery gear , tools ,spares, 15lt water and the Waeco thrown in for good measure I was 2.6T. Under GVM but close enough to make me think if I was towing on a trip I would be very close or over. Load capacity will be something I will look at very closely the next time I update the vehicle
@Wayne-Pr
@Wayne-Pr 4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely welcome@@4bnewb969 the last thing I would want anyone to is unknowingly overweight. You mentioned the next time you are towing you might be close or maybe over, do you take any passangers with you ?. Its really hard even we fight with it but some times you have to be ruthless with what you take & what you leave behind ( & trust me I know how nard that is ) because if you are like me you say to your self bit what if... The other way around it is be really tight on your fuel only carry enough + some to get you to the nxet possible fuel stop, a bit of a pain in the arse but if you absolutley need to take stuff that puts you over you have to be prepared to look how you can lessen your weight & that is dont carry as much fuel & be prepared to make extra fuel stops. Its hard I know because ive had to do it. The other way is if you are going to be " a little bit over " work out what your fuel burn rate is to get you back under by the time you get to the risk areas like Broadford or anywhere in NSW. Also remember it costs fuel to carry fuel, the heavier you are towards your GVM the more fuel you will use & the quicker you will use it ( this reduces of course once the load " in this case fuel " reduces due to fuel burn. This of course is in a perfect world & not on some of the Hills that you might have to climb. Of course the more weight, the more ware & tare & the more that, that costs you. Thanks for the positive comment & feel free to stay in touch. Rgs Wayne.

Mine is rear mounted behind the rear diff ( I've had the suspension modified & air bags) it's taken a fair pounding from some rough rock tk's & nothing but a few dents in it. Serious quality tank will last & take amazing hits without bursting. QLD company so it's tough for their conditions & handles everything the VHC has to offer.
