I sat through a few lectures from trauma surgeons talking about bullet wounds, calibers and lethality. These are the guys actually seeing the results of live humans getting shot and trying to save their lives. It came up multiple times that energy does NOT mean lethality in pistol calibers. Its all about location and the trauma to that location. The boring (but true) answer is that the sweet spot for that is a 9mm hollow point. Any other pistol caliber more powerful than the 9mm works fine too, but is a bit overkill for a human in the great majority of cases. This is why police, military and special forces primarily use 9mm.

5.7 usually runs a little more expensive around here than 45. Haven't checked the prices lately though.

All the videos I’ve seen of 5.7 leads me to believe it’s not a very effective round. The only video I saw that made it look good was shooting into clay. When shooting into ballistics gel vs any other pistol caliber its performance seems incredibly lackluster. Paul Harrel shooting through meat targets came to the same conclusion. The only pro I can say for sure is that you get a lot of ammo. I think you’re going to need it

Well I seen them at the rang shooting steel plates and what turned me off is that the 5.7 couldn't knock the plates down and it was sold hits and it was worse on the tree couldn't hit it hard enough to push it to the other side

@@TheRealZJM377 When was the last time steel plates or a tree attacked you? No FMJ 9mm, 45, 357 are going to be any good for self defense. They'll likely get your neighbor too.
