You're not going to get anywhere near a 400 fps speed loss due to the cylinder gap. I think it was a close enough test with the available equipment

Brett Kos You are correct, the speed loss is negligible or actually faster. I saw a YT video that compared a .357 revolver to a .357 auto.... WHO_TEE_WHO. No chronograph, but just paper plates (hey, he likes to have fun) and the revolver won!

He said the suppressor shouldn't change the velocity that's true I guess I can't challenge that. But shooting a revolver against a semi auto. The fact the bolt moves from the energy displaced by the shell has to change the velocity compared to a non moveable round. Like difference between a bolt action and a semi auto
@calangel
@calangel 5 жыл бұрын
Yikes, that revolver gave some ugly 22 mag speeds. The PMR 30 with a 5" bbl will give velocities in excess of 1500fps with that load. This test wasn't all that informative due to the poor representative for the 22 mag.

The 5.7 x28 is a hell of a round 👏 but is it really worth the cost? The FN is at least twice the price and the ammo is at least 10 per more than a 22 magnum. After considering an AR pistol is a lot more powerful than the 5.7 x 28 and the pistol is cheaper whats the point??really I got caught up in that when the Ruger 57 came out. They were out of stock and gave me a chance to think things thru. So I never got one I did get a Keltec PMR30 and im pretty happy with it.

5.7x28mm is closer to .22 Hornet than it is .22 WMR. The cylinder gap on the revolver is negligible so ignore any remarks from people making them. I have a Kel-Tec PMR-30 with 4.5 inch barrel than using 40gr V-Max ammo or the CCI Maxi Mags I can achieve higher velocity than you did with that A22 ammo, so I will say quality ammo will change the results some. However, 5.7x28mm will be faster and carry more energy regardless. It holds more powder, can be loaded to higher pressures, and can drive the same weight bullet faster no matter what. That's all there is to it. Now, compared to .22 Hornet it's a different story. But finding .22 Hornet handguns will be nearly impossible unless you can find a Taurus Raging Hornet like Matt over at Demolition Ranch or maybe a Thompson Center. Truly, the 5.7x28mm has proven to be a bit of a hype caliber as time has gone on, but that's mostly because it's original intention as a caliber as civilians getting armor piercing ammo is a no go. And without proper ammo, just like anything lacking proper ammo, it's not very impressive. Now, 20 rounds on tap, lighter than most 9mm guns with the same capacity, and very low felt recoil make it a good self defense round regardless of it's short comings. It is however a round that shot placement will mean more than anything else. As finding good expanding ammo will take you to the specialty market and it's going to get costly, and even fully expanded it wont be that big. Something like the PMR-30 in my eyes is a competitor in that same regard of having a lot of ammo and being light and shot placement mattering more. However, a 5.7 will like be far more reliable due to being center fire ammo. All in all, I wish people would stop saying it's like .22 WMR because it's not. I also wish people wouldnt compare it to 5.56 because it's not the same either. Now, in short barrels the 5.7x28 with proper ammo has been shown to have better terminal ballistics than the 5.56, however with some recent ammo developments that may have changed a bit more from when that information was initially gathered. I think these days an SBR 5.56 with fragmenting ammo would do a much better job than 5.7x28mm with good expanding ammo. So I feel the 5.7 was initially designed as a duty round for military, para military, and LEO's as an option to defeat 3A body armor and for that purpose it does fine. For up close and personal it's a great round, just look at the Fort Hood shooting. Proper ammo in the gun and it did more than most could have asked from it, even if it was a tragedy that never should have happened it was good data if nothing else.

What we're the barrel lengths used for each (apologies if I missed it). I'd have more interest in this with rifle length barrels. I have no experience with 5.7, but 22 mag easily shoots 2000-2200fps from my rifles. I use it often for small game up to coyotes. I'd be interested in the terminal ballistics from rifles at different distances, accuracy and drift. I could find a use for 5.7 if it doesn't cause significantly more damage than 22mag and had significantly increased accuracy

Horrible test. You may as well have shot the .22 magnum out of a derringer, and the 5.7 out of a 22 inch barrel bolt action. .22 Magnum loses a lot to the cylinder gap. According to BBTI, .22 mag out of a 5 inch barrel (bolt action) gets 1355 fps. Out of a 5.5 inch revolver it only gets 1248 fps. Furthermore, .22 Mag benefits heavily from a longer barrel. The difference between a 5" barrel and a 18" barrel is 500 fps. Compare that to a 9mm, who may only gain 150-200 fps from the same difference.

The use of the revolver was a mistake. Also, why the hell not show velocity of the 5.7 WITHOUT the suppressor? That leaves so much doubt as to make the whole effort useless.

Atleast compare it with a cmr 30 using a revolver in the comparison isn’t a good comparison at all, wouldn’t you lose velocity with a revolver because it has a a tiny space between the cylinder and the barrel which would make me think the revolver loses more velocity compared to a gun that completely enclosed the round inside a sealed chamber

You're comparing a pistol to a rifle? Not sure that you're getting accurate results this way.
