One of the books you mentioned reminded me of the Lynda Barry (influential cartoonist) wrote called “what it is”. It’s about the creative process and is mostly pictures, collages. Suggested exercises including this one which was the thing your book reminded me of: remember all the dogs you’ve known in some way (and draw them). Now I am a dog person but even if I did it with peoples non dog and cat pets it would work somewhat. Maybe if you have zero interest in animals it wouldn’t. But starting to think of dogs you’ve known brings back a flood of childhood memories for me like crazy. Some kind of memory palace or technique could be made from this

What are your thoughts on Jerry Lucas? I'm studying one of his memory series from the late 80's that my dad let me borrow so I have to use a cassette player. By the way your videos helped get me interested in memory tricks!

‘The brain that changes itself’ taught me something uniquely valuable: Neurons that wire together, fire together. This has been my go-to for memorization because it means that the more association I link one new observation to, the easier it is to remember. It is the meta-element of story telling: you link a story together with characters, places, and actions - a long link of neurons firing.

If anyone thinks it impossible to memorize, say, the Periodic Table of Elements: I'm 72 years old, suffered a really bad stroke, but I achieved that prize! I have also memorized all of the presidents and a sundry of other things. I never thought I could do it; but I did! There are two books by Nelson you should read: Remember It! and Super Memory-Powers.

I go to a library once a while, and sometimes I find random books I didn’t know I needed. I remember picking up a book that says “Silence” by Thich Nhat Hanh. At that time I had no idea who he was, and after I read the book I’ve done a lot of research about him and mindfulness. It helped me a lot with my anxiety at the time... After watching this I can hear the library calling me :D

While in college I ended up studying by highlighting the most important sentences in each paragraph. There were usually just one or two, but the process of deciding which to highlight I think made the difference. Of course it kills resale value but it worked.

Those interest in memory-learning should read Nelson's two books: Super Memory-Powers and Remember It! I bought them and they are FANTASTIC reads!

"Kenneth L Higbee -Your Memory (How it works and how to improve it)" ..highly recommended. Just small ideas can be applied and have your own unique approach. Some of the methods taught by Nelson in his book are also covered by the late Professor Higbee. "Tony Buzan - Memory Vision" can also help one develop 10,000 pegs out of one basic major method list.

When practicing memory I try linking one common event with the year it happened. For example: John Kennedy dies in 1963, 1968 both Bobby Kennedy and Dr. Martin King lose their lives after being shot.

So I do have a question for you. What should someone do if for example they can't remember locations. I have directional disorientation, and it makes it really hard for me to remember locations of things and places. It's almost like a form of dyslexia. Most of the memory techniques suggest these memory palaces.. but my memory palace doesn't stay consistent. Sort of at a loss on how to implement techniques when the base doesn't exist.

And go slower. Dyslexics can read, but they can’t read as fast as non dyslexics, because they have to work much harder. And use stories, It just occurred to me. The three little pigs maybe. Each pig the wolf, the houses, the huff the puff the blow the house down.
