For cycling geeks, there is no better channel. Love that you inject humour into many of your videos. Well done. I do, however, think it is important to put the advice into context. If you are a 25 kph rider, your lack of aero isn’t that big a deal. For 35 kph riders it’s a massive deal. Time to edit those allen keys.
@johnbarron4265
@johnbarron4265 2 жыл бұрын
Air drag becomes a huge deal at a much slower speed than you might think. Aero drag already consumes 80% of a rider's power output at 25 kph on the flats when they're postured up in a comfortable touring position. Anything they can do to streamline their body and chip away at that 80% figure will help them go faster, even if they have slightly less speed to gain than a stronger rider who's doing 10 kph more.

I can't help but think that sometimes, I'd rather be friendly than fast. Upright, seeing the sights, and waving at the passers-by can be preferable to being tucked down and missing everything but the road right in front of one. Thus I don't count upright, waving and looking around, as an actual WASTE of energy, but as an alternate application of one's energy use.

Not pacing a ride properly. Going out way too hard, or pushing it too much up a Cat 3 climb and then being useless for the next 20km. Being too thrifty with bars and gels - coming home zonked out with most of them still in my pockets - ditto water still in bottles whilst being dehydrated. Pointless carrying food/water if you're not going to use them. What's most annoying is that I know I shouldn't do any of these things, but invariably, do.
@charliedillon1400

Well said. For me: 1-2 hour ride: Glass of water before leaving, one on the frame. No food 2-4 hour ride : Glass of water before leaving. two on the frame, one with electrolytes. One bar two gels 4+ hour ride: Eat and drink the whole time. Refill two bottles at store somewhere.

That parachute reminded me of a classic pic of Ian Cammish and Pete Wells in a two-up, with their numbers catching the air behind them. I remember thinking at the time that it must be slowing them down. But I guess riders weren't thinking about aero back in the eighties.

I made the mistake of buying a puncture proof wheel, when my back wheel got flat and of course, I had to buy the more expensive one. It felt like somebody is pulling me back. Still feels like. I ride to work on roads, that are full of sharp objects. When I had a mountain bike I made the mistake of over accessorizing my bike with all the flashy gadgets. They made the already heavy bike even heavier. Learned from my mistakes. :D

I think an alternative attitude is not how to get faster on a bike, but how to have more fun. For me and my group, as pretty fit cyclist, we often will ride out on a 40 miler with our gravel bikes, today I was on a Exploro with 700x45c Gravelkings and enjoy the more comfortable ride, puncture protection, and ability to soak up pot holes. I pushed the same watts/kg as my road bike setup, and burned the same amount calories, we just rode a bit slower on the flats. We also found that the slightly slower top speeds are more compatible with unpredictable Bay Area traffic. Most group rides you just need to be as fast as the slowest rider.

What slows me down for sure is the lack of proper sleep trying to balance working shifts, kids, family life and bike. Getting my sleep and recovery sorted makes a massive difference to all aspects, especially the bike. If I'm rested I can push it as hard as I like and enjoy it too. If I am tired I can't push it and its mentally hard and not as enjoyable as I should be.

6:03 - carrying a jacket and shoes? That s the kitchen sink? I literally carry a rucksack on my rearrack that averages around 6 kilograms.

Which is better position, drops or hoods? In Si’s breaking 20 Ollie said hoods are most aero but now Conner is saying riding the drops…? Could we have a GCN does science!!!???

It's weird, but height doesn't seem to be a huge disadvantage for aero. Tall riders often do well in TTs.

Yeah, but even if you don't take too much with you at the start of a ride - I have it on good advice that a market is a good place to pick up some eggs to toss in your pack on a slow ride day. Absolutely no chance of anything cracking.

Dropping on the hoods is not the best aero position. Have the hands above the hoods, as Hank does elsewhere in the video.
