So Tubular tyre was 25-28 mm@ 175 psi and the 2nd tyre was a clincher @ 25mm tyre with max pressure at 145 psi and the last tire was tubeless at 23 mm with a max psi of 130 psi. Your tire widths are going to vary regardless of a consistent air pressure and rim width. I would love to hear arguement for how you felt this was a legitimate test?
@lyrictenor1
@lyrictenor1 7 жыл бұрын
This test is pretty flawed: The Tubular and Clincher wheels used the Corsa G+ tires, while the Tubeless tire was a Corsa Speed, which is a different, faster tire. All three types of tires need to be tested with the same tire: The Corsa Speed in the respective Tubular, Tubeless, and Clincher setups in order for this test to be fair.

The Tubeless tyre was a 23c and the others were 25/28. Would this not have had an effect on the results as well?
@EatMyPropwash
@EatMyPropwash 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Bingham-Powell It would, but remember... wider tires are faster backed up by science and research, so a narrower tire that's still faster than the other 2 would be even faster if you bumped the 23c to a 25 or bigger. Air pressure would change this as well, but at least in this test they kept all 3 at 100psi.
@g.popstefanov5948
@g.popstefanov5948 7 жыл бұрын
The wider tire would have lower rolling resistance, but potentially higher aerodynamic resistance (which is a bigger factor) depending on how it pairs with the rim. There's really no way to know until they compare apples to apples (if a 25c tire was available).
@paradox963
@paradox963 7 жыл бұрын
Actually there are more factors to take into account, wider tires have lower rolling resistance on a surface that is not super smooth because it reduces the friction from the tire chattering over the surface, but could have more rolling resistance on an indoor velodrome or in the case of this test the rollers. As for aerodynamic resistance this depends on the matchup of tire width and rim width, which ever tire width best matches up with the rim for the smoothes airflow will have less drag.
@g.popstefanov5948
@g.popstefanov5948 7 жыл бұрын
No, the wider tire has lower rolling resistance on all surfaces, rough or smooth. Narrower tires are used on the track as the aerodynamic benefit far outweighs the reduced rolling resistance, as I mentioned above. There's essentially two factors at play: aerodynamics and rolling resistance. People in this debate tend to focus on one and forget the other. Ultimately they want to know what is faster and must factor both components.
@paerhoegberg
@paerhoegberg 7 жыл бұрын
Of cause it would as the tyre pressure was set equal and anyone setting the same pressure on 23, 25 and 28 (and tubed, tubeless and tubulas) does not have the slightest clue of what he/she/it is doing.

One thing else they didn't mention is, clincher and tubeless rims, are now made to different widths to accomodate different width tyres to stop them going into a teardrop shape. This effects aero and the contact patch and shape of the sidewalls, surely this must make a difference?

Yep heard this before but doesn't make sense to me. As i see it, the amount of sidewall deflection absorbs the road imperfections, tubulars have a greater amount of tyre to absorb this as it is a complete round tyre. Clinchers and tubeless need a stronger sidewall and hook allowing less deformation over road imperfections. So as they claim with science and rolling resistance these days, if the tyre is bouncing over the road it is slower, if not it is faster. This is why a wider tyre is faster, due to the lower pressure you can run for the same contact area. They can't have it both ways. The high the pressure without bouncing the faster you will go. So I can't see how clinchers and tubeless are quicker, plus many say tubular has the softer ride, then clincher, then tubeless, if so, then tubular should be the fastest? I think tyre choices are very marginal between them. All are good these day, but one advantage with tubular is the rims are a lot lighter and don't suffer so much from brake heat failure. PLUS using different size tyres varies weight, contact area and amount of sidewall to flex

I have tried tubeless tyres for about a year Unfortunately gone through a few tyres due to punctures (one time two in one week) Sealer only works on tiny holes Anything bigger the sealer doesn’t really work that Well In the end you need to put a tube in anyway But I have to say tubeless does really roll nicely I’m sure over time tyres and sealer will get better

The test run at the same tyre pressure at 100 psi. However, tubelar tyre can run at much higher than 100 psi. And also, clincher tyre can run more than 100. So, what would be the lowest rolling resistance if we run tubular at 200 psi, clincher at 125 psi and 100 psi for tubeless?

You did a good job but this is just a start. You need to test many more ranges and more wheels. Enve, Zipp Roval and etc.... test different tyre pressures, difff size tires and rim widths. Different ground characateristics like chip n seal to smooth tarmac and even some really rough .... heavy va light rider. From there you take the info and make some observations. This was to narrow of an xperiment to help me make a decision on tubeless over tubular for clincher

Not much difference between the tubular and the clincher- that's what I expected as I have both these tyres and find them very similar. The key point is that the clincher he is testing is an 'open tubular' i.e. Vittoria have made that clincher to the same high quality as their tubular. So clinchers may be as good as or better in this case, but don't expect any old clincher with a high weight, butyl inner and low tpi to be comparable And tubulars have better resistance to flats, and do not come off, as long as glued properly. Still good reasons why they are used by the pros. Who use tubulars such as FMB with cotton or silk sidewalls, which are in a different league
@gearathon
@gearathon 5 жыл бұрын
Commendable effort guys. Interesting video👍I think the results from the tubular and clincher are comparable while the tubeless setup might not be. You are using a different model tire in a different size tire with the same pressure . Compound/design, pressure/volume and aerodynamic profile will all be different. Still , no doubt that the g-speed tubuless is fast. Cheers!

1 second ago A few disadvantages of tubeless please! I'll wait. I had hippiehead know-it-all middleaged mechanics warned me and tried to keep me from going tubeless in my mtb until I decided to go figure for myself. I will be damned I won't at least try it. I mean, hainvg punture and getting stuck on the side of the road in some harsh winter cold is where you want to be for real? I went tubeless and never looked back. I will be damned I ever put a tube in my mtb tires again. Now, roadie, I just got a tubeless compatible carbon wheels, I don't know if to go tubeless, and why am I confused, this is another enviroment entirely, the roads actually have debris and nails, you won't find nails and debris, metals and sharp objects on the trails the way you do on open tarmac roads. Some argue about getting the wheel on but, I say, hey! road tires isn't something you change every other week like the mtb ones, usually you install a tire and use it till it completely wears out. So, if you find setting up wheels for tubeless is a hassle, maybe cycling isn't really for you to begin with.

Clinchers can be just as quick as anything without needing to glue tyres on or have a ride ruined by a puncture. Top labs have tested the michelin power competition clinchers with standard 100 butyl tubes having better rolling resistance than any tubular or tubeless tyre on the market only schwalbe was as good at pressures 80psi and above. I love my power competition with my supersonic 50g tubes no punctures and feel good andcas quick as anything else out there

This was bias in favour of the tubeless. They factored out that tubular wheels are considerably lighter than clincher or tubeless wheels. Its not about the tire alone but about the whole wheel system. This is marketing. While tubs are expensive tub wheels second hand will be cheaper because of these marketing lies. Tubeless are great when they work but when they don't work they are a real let down. Just my opinion thats all.

I think tubulars are more of a safety thing in the peloton as you can ride on a flat and they won't roll off the rim if flatted. There have been a number of pros running clinchers on their TT bikes because they are faster. I think you see less tubeless mostly due to the lack of tire options, for example continental doesn't make a road tubeless and they are the most common brand in the peloton.
