Video Description:
This week we bring you three stories about waiting.
In Act 01, we are waiting for death. I know that sounds dramatic, but that's just the reality. I have this fatalistic sense that there is nothing I can do to help my anemones. There are technically 5 left in the tank, but non of them are thriving. There are only a few more things I can do. The first is to treat with antibiotics which will be happening this week. The second is to change the lights. I'm thinking going with an all t5 fixture, something I've never tried before.
In Act 02, we are waiting for new life. Trying to be patient as the IM 14 gallon peninsula cycles, but it's cycling soooo slowly! But, once it is done, it is going to become a reef tank overnight. I have so many frags to move over, and the two longfin black storm clownfish are also ready for their new home! I can't wait to move them... well, I can wait... I just don't want to. But while we wait, we can check the PAR and do the wire management. Can anybody say musical montage sequence?!?! You know I love them!
Act 03, waiting for something better. It's time to get this 40 gallon breeder tank back to a quarantine tank. The foxface rabbitfish is getting way to big, so I may need to either get rid of it or build a bigger tank. It may be time for a 120 gallon fish only tank. I've always wanted one, but I just don't want the extra work! We will have to wait and see!

🐙Anemones are exotic but sooner or later bring troubles,this is why we don't see them often on majority on reef tanks.I rather dont have them on my Reef tank.good video👍

Just a tip get a mini wet/dry vacuum and clean out the sumps they work like a charm and are inexpensive tool we all need in our toolbox.. Great when you do water changes you don't even have to disturb the display .

Lower flow a bit add iodine.had my rbta for over 10 years split only a couple times lost on vacation a couple years ago when power went out.Good luck.

My anemone was done when I left home for 12 days and was expecting that the tank will be a mess because of that anemone when I will be back. Left my tank with just blue light on with very less intensity about 25 watt. Came home and to my surprise it gained its 50% colour back, looked better and took food. So what I have learned is less light only blue and feed once a week and just leave the aquarium as it is.

Here is a tip just a bit quite hard to follow through buf if you wanna experirment you should definitly try this. I used to have two 60g aquarium one cube and one long. I borought like 3 anemone and 1 wild cought. I was able to keep them for 1 year and a half until a storm hit our province and basically killed my fish and anemone and other corals, but less about that. Here's what I did I used natural sea water this what makes it hard to begin with getting natural sea water. Still I did it. I would do a 10g water change everyday and feed my nems once a week with hikari coral food and somtimes shrimp or chopped fish. As for the lights I had the most basic lighting setup a $55 Aqua Kinght spectra v1. For the setting I really did not care about it sometimes I would make it more blue sometimes I'll make it less blue. I had no light measuring equipment. I had the barebone basic setup. I also used live rocks to cycle my tank then I brought a hardscape dry rocked and swapped those for my live rock. I did not even have a skimmer. Just keep up with the water change. I not saying that you'll have sucess with this. I'm just simply sharing what worked best for me. Happy reef keeping.

In my experience and that’s not much, I have a 29 gallon with a bonded pair of maroon clowns(that took a lot of work to bond them) I have 4 nems and the thing that gets them is the salinity and the tank has been going for about a month and doing super well and super happy. My suggestion I know you get a ton of em is move your salinity to about 123-124 and you don’t need a ton of flow. I have an echo tech mp10 and I have it on the lps preset flow

You crack me up dude. Hang in there, you’ll figure out what works for you. I typically think it’s related to the spectrum you are getting with a light. The higher end lights have better spectrums of light output. It’s not that it’s better PAR. Some of the cheaper lights can blaze PAR but they suck with overall spectrum. 👍 You are headed in the right track bro.

Dude, im a BIG fan of RBT anemones, i actually own an anemone specific tank. Try no water changes, just dose the missing nutrients and keep nitres kinda high, they seem to like it, i also fed them once or twice a week fresh shrimp and frozen food, the rest of the days the clowns fed them with pellets and different types of dry food. In my case i find them to be one of the easiest reef animals to keep in the hobby :D

There are things we can’t measure in reef tanks, such as the microbiome. Also accounting for what is fed to the tank. What is fed to the nems. I think they eat most of what is floating in the water, phytoplankton etc. feeding them and having them expell contents usually I think is a sign of over feeding. Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But the gaping mouth I keep seeing makes me think that one anemone could have an infection. The others don't seem to do that, they just seem to be shrinking! I'll keep investigating!

I had 2 x ai hydra HD’s on my tank and my Nems were at the top of my yak and they did really well, your maybe right some people are maybe not good with them, I can’t grow pocilopora but I’m great with acros, maybe that’s just life, good luck, maybe flows to high just saying , see you next time, Colin 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I had gone to a local store were window screens are made I brought the clear mesh screen for them to insert into Border trim with your auto feeder and other hanging things that will be around the glass they will custom cut each border piece to fit the edges of your aquarium cost me in Tucson Arizona $40

Just a suggestion on the peninsula tank. See if you can get some Fritz Turbo Start 900 from a local shop. Been doing some research on the forums and it's amazing stuff. Will cycle a tank within 2 days. They actually recommend adding live stock right after adding the bottle of turbo start. I did this myself and while the fish were floating in the water I added the bottle and let it churn while they acclimated to temp 😁 been a week and my two clowns are happy and water peramiters are great!

Anemones are, ONE of the MOST finicky animals aka inverts to keep in aquariums. Some are hardy as ever and anything you place it in water parameters wise they'll thrive and just love being in it. Then the ones you've gotten are probably either some 1st Gen on those and not fully used to aquarium life as many other these days... Idk for sure but, ya never know for sure. But, also flow is really needed too. Not fully facing in the direction of flow but, it will help whether clowns or other damsels to occupy it.

Have you sent water out for an ICP test? There may be an underlying issue killing your Nems that it could detect. Also as someone else said, check for stray voltage. There has to be an assignable cause as to why yours are all dying, and rather quickly.

I don’t feel it’s bacterial. You’ve gotten them from multiple sources, put them in multiple tanks, and still no luck. So weird that they all keep dying.

Nems are crazy. They do what they want. I just throw them a 1/4inch to 1/2inch chunk of shrimp every two days and they seem to stay pretty happy.

I feel your pain I also having issues with keeping anemones LTA and bubble tips. They do good for about a month and then just melt. I have one rock anemone doing great. Just not sure what I am doing wrong! All other corals and fish are good LPS and Softies. Good luck

Nope, thought high nitrate and phosphates? Even with low nitrates and phosphate. Can’t figure it out it’s killing me because they are my favorite. I had a LTA for a year since than a month or so than gone

I don’t quarantine or anything with anything either cuz it’s more expensive. My nems, rainbow, ultra rainbow, black widow, and Cali sunset (all bubble tipped nems)

Nothing good happens fast on the reef with that said I'm new to your channel and I really like the content. I would just like to offer advice this is not telling you how but more from my experience, anemones really need a stable and seasoned tank. To many changes to frequent make them want to move and seek better water but unfortunately in our systems they are trapped and remain in an area they may not like I think the best thing to do is check for stray voltage in that system then try and keep the nitrates in check also give the system it self time to establish again big changes including massive waterchanges can also cause mini cycles you may not see with your eye which could cause unhappy inhabitants. Good luck and can't wait till you figure it out!! Keep us updated!

Thanks for taking the time to offer your thoughts. Good advice all around. Yeah, stability is key, and definitely something I've always struggled with... due to my own constant interventions. I'm getting better, but still is a tendency of mine! I'm definitely picking of a volt-meter-thingy (I have no idea what to call it), and going to watch some videos about how to check my water for stray voltage. I doubt it is stray voltage since these deaths are happening in different tanks. If you’ve been in the same house for all of these tanks I would strongly look at your source water and RODI filters. An ICP test would be my first start and I would find one that tests your RODI water as well.

Not sure if this will help, but I lost 3 nems and one of the things that helped was to get the water dirty, my nems preferred about 20 nitrates, I have a Starburst nem that has now split so keeping a slightly dirtier tank has helped them grow and split.

@@MyFirstFishTank phosphate between .05 and .1 some time creeping up to 0.13 and I also like some algae I. The tank as it helps me keep the nitrates and phosphate stabilized, I have had a huge growth in coralline algae keeping these parameters. Also soft corals love nitrate and phosphate as long as they aren't super high.

I would try much less flow. I always had them do better in mesh baskets that blocked most of the flow around them. If ICP comes back with nothing, low flow would be my next step.

I dont know if you read all of these comments, so I am gonna give you some advice on nems in the hope you will have a better chance of getting these to thrive. First of all it begs the question what happened when you put these guys in the tank, you can see from anemone behavior if for example they need more or less light, they will either hide under rock or they will climb up or stretch out. If you see either happening you need less lighting or stronger lighting. Feeding: You have to feed anemones, but do not overfeed! They can get sick from overfeeding and also from eating food that is not that good, feed high quality frozen food like a piece of krill or two once or twice a week. My Black Widow Anemone sits around 250-300PAR of lighting and loves it. Signs its doing well: Tentacles elongated, either bubble or no bubble, swaying in the flow, should not show signs of detracting or deflating. Disc all stretched out. Hope this helps and in my opinion you probably need stronger lighting for these guys (remember these anemones grow literally right under the water level in the wild, they are HIGH PAR creatures) and a solid food schedule.

Also those maxspect razors are not very good, spectrum or par wise. Try Reefbreeders for a better value and better par. Also: a GOOD source of aquacultured RBTA is crucial to longevity. It can really matter on where you get these anemones. Sometimes a splitting anemone from a friends tank can actually mean they are splitting for survival not because they are happy. You need a happy anemone split.

Yeah I've heard that too. Although, they do put out quite a bit of PAR on max. I measured around 400 at the top of the rockwork. What lights do you recommend. I'm actually thinking of eventually switching to either an all t5 fixture or a hybrid t5 LED fixture.

It’s a little late you probably figured out that not feeding and low par isn’t that good .. I don’t think nems care about phos and nitrate or even alk for that as long as you don’t swing them …I kept them under radions and they loved it btw I was blasting it at 450-500 at the top and 350 on the bottom where nems were placed and what I noticed was newly split nems climbed to higher par area … feed carbon gfo clean clear water ..

Bro honestly I feel your pain my tanks be on point but for some reason torches and nems always melt on me parameters is good don’t fluctuate at all got 3 radion xr30 gen4 so lighting ain’t a issue but I just can’t keep them grow monti grow sps like nothing but torches and nems ..... my kryptonite

@@MyFirstFishTank i had 4 colorado sunburst get sick, and had to treat them. Be sure to change the water daily, and any time theres any discharge. Dont worry about any cycling. Use new freshly mixed saltwater. All the items except salt and cipiro are available at walmart. I dosed at 500mg daily for 15 days. Saved about 12k in nems! Best to put them in the black pond basket from homedepot, to protect them from a powerhead too

yeah, tank is still new, but why would an old tank be better if your water parameters are stable. People say you need a mature tank, but what does that mean? Always curious if its just one of those phrases we throw around in the hobby that really means something else enitrely. And I can't give up on nems. They are one of the reasons I got into this hobby and I'm not going to shy away from a fight1. Well, actually, I frequently shy away from fights! :0

In the images, I can see some brown stuff on the anemones. Make sure that's not dinos. Dinos can kill! One of the worst kinds of "algae" you can have in your tank. That issue has to be solved. Not saying it's easy, they just came back in my tank. And there's a facebook group about dinos where you may find help.

I have the same urchin as you and mine decided to become a coral eater so went into the sump. Is your urchin in the anemone tank if so could it be irritating the anemones.

My two cents... Calcium bang it out at 500 Magnesium you didnt mention yet, 9 min in.... same thing max it out 1500++ Pull the carbon outta there.... Bumb up that alk to 8.5 dkh☆☆ Keeping it at 8 lets it swing into 7.5ish range which is no bueno Need to be dosing two part immediately

I would check for stray voltage. I had one of mine throw all of its tentacles in my 34g so I moved it to my 90. It’s taken about 6 months but it has recovered. I know stray voltage shouldn’t bother anything since it’s not grounded but everytime I’ve seen one of my anemones lose tentacles it’s been because of voltage in the tank.

@@MyFirstFishTank Search southwire Multimeter on Amazon and the first one for $40 is the one I use. You can pick it up at Lowe’s if you don’t want to wait on shipping. Put one probe in the ground of an electrical socket and the other in the water. My 34 has about 19v flowing through it right now because of a skimmer pump. You can verify the piece of equipment by turning one thing at a time off until the voltage goes away. There are also some write ups about stray voltage and how to check for it on R2R.

Do you run carbon? I had two tanks identical one I had a reactor running with carbon that tank nems were big a and beautiful the other with out reactor not so much. I moved the other nems over after a week they started opening again

You need to acclimated to new light conditions over a long time. 150 to 350..I would suggest that us atleast a 20 day acclamation period. Maybe all of the clowns are irritating the anemone? To me it feels like the tank isn't mature enough

@@MyFirstFishTank its an interesting question. If parameters are spot on, isn't it cycled.. but from my experience I've had an anemone in a tank 6 months old and it melted, detached tips and all. I then had anemone in the same tank 1.5yrs later and thriving. Split a few times due to temperature instability but fine. It wasn't like parameters were different 1.5yrs ago, I think there is more to these sensitive creatures but hey, I could be wrong. How old is the anemone tank? Maybe it is all of the clowns having full blown orgies

Wondering what salt you're using? Nems will often times not do well with certain salt inconsistencies from batch to batch. You also may want to consider light spectrum, do you happen to have any spare kessil loghts?

So I'm using Fritz blue box. And I have a kessil tuna blue I'm not using, but since then I've switched pretty much everything over to the AI primes.

@@MyFirstFishTank i know Fritz is good salt. If its not a bacterial infection you may want to try the kessil tuna blues. My anemones completely transformed when I witched to tuna blues. It must be the light spectrum they love.

Yeah I totally agree with you. I have compared the spectrum, and I've watched a whole bunch of BRS videos for their lighting series. I think what I'm going to have to do is set up a specific anemone quarantine tank to treat and watch all new anemones. If I can get them thriving in there, then maybe I can figure out how to make the transition!

Did you dip your anemones in Revive or any coral dips? Maybe try skipping it if you did as my first anemone never looked happy after the dip and didn't make it past a week.

@@MyFirstFishTank I have always used red sea blue bucket and my nem tanks have always been awesome. Not sure how the chemistry or levels compare. Lights shouldnt matter as much as you think. The nems will move if they dont like what they have. They will have/keep their bubbles to shade their bodys.

Experts recommend not mixing anemone species in tanks under 1000 gallons. They release toxins to attack each other as they compete for space on the reef. In a smaller closed system these toxins build up over time. Sometimes the anemones will build up tolerance to each other but more often one or both will succumb to the toxins.

Do you clean your sumps? Probably a good idea to give them a clean once a year at least to get rid of detritus. Also, I read GFO can be harmful to reef aquariums...have you considered there is excess ferrous oxide making its way into your tanks and killing the anemones?

How long has this tank been set up for? I got ultra rainbow regular rainbow and rose bubble tips in a 20 gallon standard hang on the back for about 3 months now and there growing big and lust I feed them everyday. But didn’t put them in until my tank was up and running for 6 months. Only change water 1 time a week 5 gallons. My par hitting them is at about 185 to 200. And to my surprise my phosphate is at .3 and doesn’t seem to bother them at all. No other coral in tank. One thing I do know is they really don’t like nitrates. I try to keep mine around 5-7 max. Worked for me really well so far. Oh and also I keep my anemone tank at around 76 77 degrees.

Anytime yea I feed mine mysis shrimp with spirlina algae. I try to stay away from the bigger chunks of meat. Smaller food is easier to eat for them in my experience. Also one other question I got for u. Do u have a cleaner shrimp in ur tanks? That have the anemones?

Ok just asking, cause my cleaner shrimp went rogue soon as his figured out I was feeding my anemones he started digging in my anemones mouths. Had another one do in my lps tank, starting digging in my Duncan’s, hammers, frogspawns, and almost killed them. Just for future reference, if u see ur lps or other coral starting to close up go out to tank when lights are out to see if he’s digging in there mouths, only if u direct feed them.

I do feed them mini mysis and reef roids, but not the sick one. I've heard that feeding a sick anemone can stress it out even more.

To be fair I think you may be chasing you're tail here. If you have 3 separate aquariums, independent of eachother, you have experienced deaths in all of them and acquired stock from alternative vendors, then it would seem the most probable root cause is most likely you're source water. If you are going to do a ICP test I would suggest you do it for you're source water. And confirm or rule that out first.

Do you get your anemones online or a LFS? I have 4 bubble tips from my LFS and are doing great but I ordered a bubble tip from live aquaria twice on separate occasions and they shipped it in terrible condition, zero heat pack and shipped it in too much water and both died with no refund. Ordering online is a huge factor in losing them due to stress or not being able to examine the anemone in person and pick a healthy one. I honestly think it's a gamble ordering online.

Well, I've done both. In that history of my anemones, I'd say slightly over half were ordered online, and the rest were from an LFS. I still think my biggest problem in the past has been doing too much, and keeping my NO3 and PO4 too low, but I've changed those things. I do think one of my new anemones has a bacterial infection, so I'll be setting up a hospital tank this week and treating with cipro.

@@MyFirstFishTank I switch between shrimp and scallops for mine and the growth is explosive. Frozen uncooked shrimp and frozen bay scallops from the grocery store: I thaw a whole one in a ramekin of tank water, slice pieces to jam in their mouths, and finely chop the rest of the piece of shrimp or scallop to broadcast feed the fish. Small chunks of shrimp or scallops are also good for others with larger mouths, like duncans, too.

I thaw a random cube from a frozen assortment pack in the same ramekin, broadcast feed by dumping the contents in front of the wavemaker, and then use tongs to directly feed those I cut chunks for while the fish and scrimps are distracted.

I've kept carpet anemones, sebae anemones and a riterri anemone successfully....the only anemone I couldn't keep alive were bubbles, no clue why they are so hard

@@MyFirstFishTank I'd say the most important step is light acclimation for bubbles. They really do prefer less light than people think and this is tricky because they are very mobile similar to sebaes. Typically a split response is a survival trait, I've had this happen to one before and both died shortly after. I had one rose anemone survive and thrive but then sold it to obtain a blue gig anemone. Shortened photoperiod doesn't work because the anemone still gets pounded during that period, I would recommend putting light diffusers over the anemone and slowly (over weeks) acclimating it to the light. From my experience the healthy anemones that move never hide, they move but to areas of more flow not under rocks.

One thing I noticed from your video is the scene where you show your media reactor and it appears your carbon is tumbling. I don’t know if this is true or not but I heard that’s really bad for anemone. Maybe a sponge on top of the carbon to keep it from tumbling.

move your anemones to a different tank or give them to a friend while you change things up. Sometimes anemones just don't like a certain tank. For me personally I tried doing 10% of ro water not rodi and seem to like the dirtier water. Just for my anemone but feel like these creatures are either a hit or fail. Not lose hope. Only lose your interest in these expensive blobs lol.

sounds like you aren't being consistent. Have to let your tank just be. Let the nems get used to the water and don't change anything. Having nitrates go up and down is likely a problem. From my experience they like the same chemistry as soft corals. I have had the same anemones for 5 years now and have had them in the tank from month 2

I haven't heard that. I've only heard that gfo and nems are bad if your PO4 falls to zero. But mine says higher, so why is it bad?

Matthew i respect you for telling us all this... However it really alarms me that you just keep purchasing things to ultimately just see them die. Im not sure how well your tanks are doing nowdays but I hope you have gotten a better sense for what you are doing and smaked some sense into yourself. Have a good day sir =)
