Peter Jackson's 'Mortal Engines' adaptation of the 2001 Philip Reeve sci-fi quartet hits cinemas after over 8 years of preparation. The first of a film series, it features giant 'predator cities' on wheels.
A young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), emerges as the only one who can stop the city of London from wreaking havoc. Fans complained about Shaw's reduced facial scar in the trailer. We asked director Christian Rivers how the new-look scar was achieved.
As the film is produced by Universal, Minions feature in the London Museum scene of the film instead of Disney characters described in the book. St Paul's Cathedral has been flipped so the doors face backwards.
Fans will be delighted that Anna Fang is even more badass in the film, as singer and actor Jihae trained for months to get into the role. And Stephen Lang's portrayal of Shrike used some unusual influences to get into character.
Mortal Engines will be in cinemas from 8 December.

-Hesters scar -The guild of engineers were bald, and the tattoos -Basically everything about Bevis Pod and Katherine -Katherine dying -Hester realizing -Katherine was her half-sister -Tom being traumatized after killing the pilots at the end and watching all of London explode -All of London exploding - a ton of meaningful characterization and chemistry between characters that made the books so good

1. Valentine being the villain 2. Valentine killing Crome instead of being scared of him 3. Kate living 4. No Dog. 5. Pod living... and barely being a character. 6. The wall being destroyed 7. Air haven being destroyed. 8. No pirates 9. London not blowing up. 10. Valentine mission to destroy the fleet... I would give it an in name only adaptation.

Things I spotted wrong in the movie? Oh where oh where to begin... 1 Hester’s scar 2 the fact that Valentine wasn’t on London for most of the book 3 the fact that crome is the real villain in the end and valentine was actually afraid of him 4 the shield wall is never hit by Medusa 5 there is no kill key and Medusa was shut down by accident 6 shrike never had a change of heart 7 air haven was not destroyed 8 valentine chooses to die after killing Katherine himself albeit on accident 9 it is not revealed by valentine that Hester is his daughter 10 Tom never wanted to be an aviator and in fact idolized valentine even after he pushed Tom out of London and wanted nothing more than to be a historian 11 the way in which things happen in the book generally does not match the movie 12 Tom Hester and the entire anti tractionist league did not really know what Medusa was and as a result the anti tractionist league refused to help in the final battle and even believed it to be Tom and Hester who had killed Anna 13 dog exists in the books 14 bevis pod doesn’t survive and is a much more important character in the books 15 the engeneers are all bald, even the women 16 Tom and Hester are 15 17 the pirates weren’t in the movie at all 18 valentine destroyed the anti tractionist leagues airships before they could ever launch 19 London is completely destroyed 20 the historians rebel against the engineers resulting in most of their deaths 21 there are more stalkers than shrike in the books though, having brains made by the London engineers rather than the ancients like shrikes was, they cannot really think for themselves as stalkers like shrike an Anna can 22 and so so so much more but I’m tired of typing, the only real similarity between the book and the movie is the name and the books are so much better, easily in my top 5 book series

One difference is the way London was destroyed. In the Book, Katherine gets shoved across Medusa's control panel, and it overloads. No one knows how to stop it. It explodes and turns London into a radioactive wreck. Katherine dies, and there is no place for her in future stories. The remaining inhabitants of London, at least some of them, don't go to Batmunk Gompha, they stay in London and build a tiny little levitating city called New London. Its important to the Ending of the series that this is made.

Some things in the book, different from the movie: -Tom was never a "pilot in training" -HYDRA was never actually used on the Shield Wall -London used HYDRA on an even bigger traction-city that was hunting London -Shrike didn't collect dolls. -Hester's character was alot darker and meaner. -Hester was going to let Shrike kill her after all. -Tom was the one to kill Shrike, and Hester got mad. -There was no silly "kill switch" flash drive thingy. -Katherine accidentally sets off HYDRA's self-destruct. -Katherine dies saving Hester from Valentine's sword. -Valentine actually SAVES Tom and Hester, let's himself be killed when HYDRA self-destructs. -Valentine doesn't have Robocop's handgun. -There is no "Inkie", sadly. Lots more that I could list, but this is already too long.

1. They left out lots of traction cities (In the books, Panzerstadt-bayreuth tried to eat london, Speedwell was a proper town (not a caterpillar machine thing), Arkangel was mentioned at Airhaven and there was a "pirate" suburb called Tunbridge wheels). 2. They messed up the proportions (the shield-wall should've been a lot bigger and Salthook wasn't a town, so much as a big house on wheels). 3. They completely changed certain characters for the sake of looking good/convenience (In the books, Chudleigh Pomeroy was an old English man, Hester's scar took off her nose and right eye and Captain Khora was African-American, not Indian).

There was a lot more than that indifferences. Spoiler warning * The resurrection project in London was removed. The meeting of valentines daughter and natsworthy. The Medusa conspiracy in London. (That was sorta there). The pirate town was removed. And valentine was made more villainous in the movie. Over all the movie was a good story. And I understand due to budget and time, they could not add in it all. But some of it could of been done so that it could smoothly lead to a sequel if that happens. Now there will be some plot holes if a sequel is made in following of the books.

I've never binge read a book series like I binge watch a TV show before but this series made it happen. Although, in the fourth one I spent the first third of the book yelling where's Hester then spend the second third yelling I want my Tom and Hester reunion then felt a little dissatisfied that she never saw Wren again. But, I didn't even bother to watch the movie because I saw from the trailer that they took out everything that was good about the books.

Making a movie from a book is always a major problem. A book is too long for a single movie. Lord of the rings needed three movies and even they had to cut a lot out. To convert a novel into a single movie requires a lot to be cut out, Logan’s Run is a classic example. As far as I can work out the movie makes an epic attempt to cover the entire first book, no choice I suppose, because none of the story arc’s within the novel was good suitable for a standalone movie. The result is normally bad pacing. Ghost in the Shell is a good movie but they lost all the feel of the original source material because they had to rush it. I am guessing this is what has occurred here. I do not like the novel very much and generally am not too keen about steam-punk, but I can appreciate it. As the critics have panned this movie and the fans indicate its acceptable, I am going to watch this one. I still love John Carter, great movie and enjoy watching Ghost in the Shell, not as great but good nonetheless. I can never forgive the critics for panning both when they first came out. Lesson here is, only believe the critics if their score is similar to the fans, otherwise only believe the fans/audience. 50% is good enough for me.

Lord of the rings didn't need 3 movies it was based on 3 books and the 3rd movie was 3 and a half hours long and the extended version add's another hour to it

The biggest difference between the Mortal Engines book and the movie: the book has sequels, but the movie never will. Whether you think that's good or bad is entirely up to how you feel about the movie.

After watching the movie first and finishing the first book yesterday... Alright. There is a lot they changed for the movie. Some in a good way, some in a bad way. Chrome's character was an unnecessary change honestly, so was Hester. But, the fact that they cut the entire part with Tunbridge Wheels and Panzerstadt-Bayreuth makes sense if you don't look at it in vacuum. The audiobook is 9 hours or so. They had to cut content. Nobody would go and watch a 4 hour movie (well, nobody did anyway). It was not a perfect adaptation of a book, far from it, but it also is very far from the worst I have seen. Most of the plot points are there. The way Hester gets onto London, how Tom prevents her from killing Valentine, slave market, Airhaven, London's destruction. Overall, I would recommend both. Could have they done better? Sure they could. Is it absolutely awful? Nope, not even close.

OMG there are more interenting differences than Anna Fang and Shrike's characters... what about the whole ending of mortal engines.. london exploded bcs of medusa and Kate with Bevis died, Anna Fang died not in St. Paul'S cathedral but on wall of Shan Guo. I think that only one important of these 5 differences for readers is the 1st one, Hester's scar..

Hester Scar; Understandable. St. Paul; Bad choice. Minions; UNFORGIVABLE!!! Minions are abomination that become pests. Striker; At least his death was memorable. Instead of going out like a machine, I felt touch by it's death and how part of him is humane. (Yes, I know that not how to spell his name.) Anna Fang; To be honest, I could never picture Anna Fang. When I do, I just imagine a ordinary woman. I'm not a fan of the book. Some moments just strike me as odd and some were stupid. For example, in the book Tom piss himself at the sight of Striker. But the piss joke was bad timing and ridiculous. However, while I enjoyed the movie more, there were a few things that pissed me off. Valentine being a complete villain ruin the reason I like Valentine. He didn't kill the Mayor, he didn't want a war and he certainly didn't died like a normal villain of the nineties would. Valentine death was holding his dead daughter (Not Hester) in his arms while feeling of the lost of a love one. I don't know what this film is trying to do. Ruin the movie, become more popular than the book or to inspired people to read the book. But I can say that I careless for the movie as I careless about the book.

Three things I didn't like about the books: -That far in the future, most races and cultures would've dissolved into each other to the point that you wouldn't recognize any of the cultures we have today -They never explain how the traction cities get food and water, and how those that sell vegetables and whatnot grow the vegetables -Why is British culture still exactly the same, especially with footmen and lord mayors and whatnot.
@Nemo7The7Pirate7
@Nemo7The7Pirate7 5 жыл бұрын
Same reasons races and cultures did not dissolve yet. did you miss the part about poo snickers bars? Are you some sort of expert of British culture? I am not, just some slav. They speak english, live in a city named london. Thats is all i have to go by. What were these "footmen" in the book? All i can remember are beefeaters.
@oliverturner1649

One thing i liked about your comment: you made a comment about mortal engines. Three things i didn't like about your comment: -People have been around for tens of thousands of years and we still have distinct races, why would that suddenly stop? races would not disappear. -Food and water on london specifically is absolutely explained in the books. London has a massive food shortage, which is why they want to breach the shield wall in the first place, they have resorted to growing algae in vats and recycling human waste to compress and dry into a "tasty nutritious snack" -I am in fact british, and trust me, british culture is NOTHING like what we see in mortal engines. We do not have footmen, pretty much every culture that has cities has people doing the work of a lord mayor, they just use a different word for it. The reason they have those things in the books is because they are based on traditions.

YOU MISSED THE BIGGEST DARN THING: the book is centered around Tom, not Hester... Tom growth from wide-eyed innocent to hero adds depth to the book. Hester character stays bitter and BITTER. Well... to be honest Hester goes through a rollercoaster of development. She could just never fully escape the hatred and fear and pain that have burned themselves deep into her. Who knows... I think if they had never encountered the Green Storm, Tom might have actually managed to heal her broken soul. The way it was the violence of her life, her crippling fear of loosing Tom's love and finally her guilt over her betrayal of the city drove a wedge into her entire life and any fully functioning relationship she could have had with Tom. As such she is a highly tragic character.
