Great review, completely agree with what the movie did wrong. One small change that really threw the whole movie off for me was how London treats the people from the cities they eat. In the books digested people are treated as slaves working in literal poop farms until they drop dead. In the movie after capturing the smaller city they are told that London will provide them with housing and assign them jobs. It makes municipal Darwinism seem like it’s not that bad. In the movie you never really get the sense that the system London operates on is inherently cruel and inhuman.

Exelent Review! In the Fever Crumb prequels we actually lern that the city of London got moving not because of the Unstable earth, but because Auric Godshawk liked the idea of a moving city, and so did quercus after he and his nomads took over the city. Most other citys got moving because of the fear of London eating them if they can't move out of its way!

Yeah, Bevis definitely doesn't die when MEDUSA malfunctions. He dies when Tom shoots down Valentine's airship a while before the whole MEDUSA situation, and the airship crashes into London. Bevis didn't even die in the initial explosion of the crashing airship, it's much more brutal. After it explodes, the airship's red-hot engine, smashed up and spewing boiling oil, smashes into him, crushing him, twisting and tearing his limbs and flesh, and literally melts half of his body.... It's horrible....

Unfortunately, the main stream Hollywood big budget films are just what u said, uninspiring, unremarkable and lack that soul, baby. They have their agenda, and it certainly isn't character development. The movie was very underwhelming, but your book/movie contrasting review was great. More like this would be welcomed.

I was somewhat surprised since Peter Jackson did such a wonderful job doing both big action and visuals as well as character development in LOTR - I know he didn't direct this, but the guy who did worked with Peter on LOTR, so you'd think he'd have learned something 🙄 oh well....

@@LienesLibrary That's the most heartbreaking part, because it was written by Jackson and his LOTR - Team of Writers (Walsh and Boyens). But either Universal Pictures made them write crap or they just don't know what they're doing. One of those is a lot more likely than the other. I actually posted a video on M.E. on my own channel... Anyways, thank you for giving me a greater understanding of the context!

I'll tell you one thing they got wrong in the book is Hester's scarred face it's suppose to be more hideously more disfigured than what was shown in the move. Hollywood just didn't want to ugly up their actresses well there are images of women who made themselves up to look like Hester from the book & the make up was on point to what Hester really looked like.

Hi Liene, great video, I read the book years ago and then watched the movie last weekend, what a disaster! I also remember (perhaps wrongly) that the characters seemed a lot younger in the book. I found it really weird in the first scene when Tom is this mid-twenties guy with a "man bag" throwing out one-liners. I expected him to be some gawky young teenager like Mikey in The Goonies and the movie lost me from that moment on

Watching this video again coz I watched the movie again recently and will start reading the books, but Tom’s character is my fave just coz it’s Robert sheren 😂 but yeah I agree his knowledge and interests in old stuff goes out the window when it’s plot time. and it’s like he’s more useful now he’s involved in the flying, but people aren’t 1D and yeah Tom says the museum is just a job but he seems legit enthusiastic about old things. so it would have been nice if this movie was a series instead, so in their travels, Tom and Hester could bond over some old things Tom would gush about muggle things like Arthur Weasley style and Hester takes it all in and does the same coz her mom was an archeologist etc..

I find it really strange whenever anti-tractionists are referred to as "rebels" because in the first place, there is actually no established form of government in the Hungry City universe, therefore no actual basis to rebel on. The traction city of London may be portrayed as some kind of empire in the movie, but in that universe, there are also even larger cities such as Manchester and Arkangel, both of which dwarfs London in comparison, therefore, London is not an all-powerful empire on Earth because there are bigger and more powerful cities that can devour it. That is why London has wheels, to hunt smaller cities and at the same time run away form bigger cities trying to eat it. And since anti-tractionists are at odds with all traction cities (hence the name), they can't be "rebels" for a government that doesn't exists since no traction city has claim to the entire planet. Of course I do realize that the affinity to refer to certain characters as "rebels" may be because "anti-traction leaguer" is probably a mouthful, but still, illogical.
@Korivak
@Korivak 5 жыл бұрын
electrogestapo Agreed. The fact that there were a few tiny traction towns and a solitary predator city was disappointing. No larger predators, no starved behemoth, no smaller pirate suburbs. Municipal Darwinism is a really interesting backdrop for an action adventure story. The movie lost all of that with the X-Wings versus the Death Star, which, while good, has been done.

I just watched the movie yesterday and after watching this I can see how much better the book was than the movie. The book actually sounds entertaining. I never thought I would say this but the Termniator guys was the coolest part and he really didn’t have a ton of reason to be in the movie. Shrike had no impact on the London plot at all. *spoilers* After he died, I was thinking “really? This movie has another 40-50 minutes left and another big battle? Ughgjghhhhh!!” The first act drug on. Hester had little to do with the story until the end kinda. She one of the most passive protagonists I had seen in a while. Hester just gets tossed from place to place and has no real big decisions to make. I don’t be know if that was different in the book but it was an issue for me. We don’t really have any interesting characters to hold onto after that. Tom is annoying at best. And one liner Trinity lady is just a one liner Trinity lady. Nothing more. I almost cracked up when her pulpit friends died and the camera held on their slow motion sacrfices like I care or something. It was disappointing to me and I see why this movie flopped as bad as it did.

omg I knowww when they made her death and Shrike's love into these big deals I was so annoyed and bored. in the book, Hester is very motivated and she and Tom are constantly at each other's throats until they begin to see each other's points of view... the book forced each character to grow and change whereas the movie they just went around blowing stuff up for no reason

I think this would probably work better as a television show where they would have more time to expand on the characters and their backstories. With a 2 hours? long movie, these's bound to be a lot left on the cutting room table. I also agree with your comments on Hester. Even thou I haven't read the book in awhile I seem to remember her being a little less comely than the miss in the movie. after all of the buildup with the scarf pulled up over her nose the final reveal was at least to me "Oh she's not so bad". Anyway there are about 7 books in this series. After the underwhelming performance of this first movie take I can only hope for a tv 2nd life.

This book has been on my steampunk read list for awhile but i have been caught up reading other novels. I had to see the movie once it was released regardless of the reviews. All in all, I thought it was a good movie. Yes, it has some MAJOR flaws that could be questioned. I also found this problem with watching films similiar to Harry Potter. If i went into it knowing that fantasy wise its going to be very far fetched, then my mindset will be to just enjoy the ride. Im now reading through the book to compare and I do notice all of your points stated. The book is better so far by far, but I dont believe it degrades the movie. Would I reccomend it to everyone? No. Best way I would descibe the movie- eye candy visuals with a crazy unstable steampunk plot with a few moments of cringeworthy dialogue finishing up with an epic battle.

Book is at least 10 times better. Premise is very justifiable and something that doesn't ever really get in the way. It tells a tale in children's words that is something much darker and graphic when read out sentence by sentence; there's no censorship. Motives are grey, human, and so are the characters. The book is an overall hopeful comment on human nature and capitalistic consumer society being unsustainable - darwinism, and does it in a graceful and emotionally hard hitting manner. Every single plot twist is a surprise, drawing you in deeper and deeper into the lore and tale as the book nears its conclusion.

The book is certainly alright, pretty interesting. The characters are good, the story isn't overly preachy or kiddy-kiddy. There are a few points that could have been polished, but it was overall good. Shrike, or Grike, in the version I read, was awesome, and Valentine was cool. Hester, though, I felt was a little disappointing. The premise was cool, and the perspective of Tom was good, but it was a little predictable. 7/10.

@@LienesLibrary Well. I'm not going to compare it to the book since I hardly remember it. In the beginning (if Hugo wasn't that obvious a shady dude) you could almost think that Hester was the bad one since she's trying to assassinate someone who so far has done nothing wrong. I chuckled a bit when it came to the part when "the old ones food does not spoil" thing. Ah, the things we do to our food! I wish that Shrike had been a bigger part, it could have been so much more emotional. The whole movie I just sat there and hoped that there would not be any romance between Hester and Tom. And in my mind, they are now best friends going on adventures! And that is probably a big part for me as well. (I know... there is a second book...) I think that maybe I liked it because of potential as well as I had ZERO expectations on it going in (I had free movietickets, I could risk it being bad.) It's not going to be a new favourite or anything but it left me feeling kind of good and I want to see it again. The goofy of the movie was within my range of okay. However, I did feel a bit dizzy in some of the fighting scenes, I think it went a little too fast for me to enjoy them. And another point that might be me and my friends reading too much into it. But we all have been studying forestry and a bit of environment so we had talks when it came to the nature and then London just demolishing the forest in the end.

The book is so packed full of stuff, though, so to film it all would have made at least a trilogy for tie first book alone. Even with six hours to spend, it would still be trimmed down, like they skipped Tom Bombadil and merged Glorfindel in with Arwen in LOTR. I'm disappointed with the movie, and I'm *so* glad I waited to watch it until way after it came out and all the hype had died down.

I've often watched or read negative reviews for things I like and agreed with most of what is said - loving something doesn't mean you think it's perfect, it means you like it despite, or even because of, its flaws 😉

Liene's Library there are times i have liked something in spite of the criticism against it, and there are times i have agreed with some of the negativity said about a film or book i like. I guess my point was that i don’t think there’s ever been a time when i agreed with ALL the criticism before! What’s weirder is after your review i still like the film, warts and all. I agree the actors all did very good with what they were given. It’s a shame they seemed far more interested in producing a new epic fantasy series than they were in telling a great new epic story. The components were all there.... Thank you, this was a great review of both book and movie. I’m now a subscriber. Much appreciated!

The movie basically reviewed the Star Wars Trilogy and applied it. The difference is you didn't care for the characters in this movie. I could have cared less if all of them died. The chemistry between the actors was nonexistent and the acting mediocre at best. The movie was also one big cliché after another. Finally, Shrike was a character that could have been used so much better and was the most interesting thing about this movie.

I feel like this book would have worked REALLY well as a TV show. Too much goes on in the book for it to have been a good movie. Movie was terrible

The actress was nearly 30 years old during filming. That’s legal.

This girl apparently can't get through 50 seconds without a hard edit and it's so distracting it's not really worth it especially with such a ham-handed opening. Better KZfaqrs out there...
