Just adopted a 1 1/2 year old lab-Pitt. I’m a first time dog owner and love your videos. All the “problems” the center said she had from her previous owner are gone. The idea of looking up to me for guidance has helped tremendously in our relationship. I want her to succeed and have a happy life. Your videos have helped me do that. Thank you so much Will. Truly.

A "little bit" of patience with Queen Eileen ❤️❤️... took me 9 months to teach my Dane to get in and out of the car on her own, and ONLY my back hatch! She still gets incredibly confused to enter any other vehicle or even mine in a different way 😂 I hope we get to compare notes one day!

Great video, as always you put out great content!! I love the idea of crate training, and I know you've done videos about it in the past, I would love a video geared towards how to approach crate training for a rescue dog who has an aversion to them because of past life experiences. Thanks for all you do!

I've had 14 dogs and say I'm a good dog trainer but I've only started crate training with the last two dog and I would say this is a game changer and both the dog loved it and when got the crate back out to start to train the second dog we had trouble with the first dog not letting the new dog in the crate so for all the people saying it's cruel you are wrong
@wakandabih
@wakandabih 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think crate training is cruel at all given the dog has enough space to stretch. However my mother in law doesn’t crate the dog to train it. She does it bc her place is small, cramped, and she doesn’t want the dog on her furniture. She can’t stand the dog making noises or wanting to play. In THAT scenario I think it is cruel because she’s locking him in there all day and only letting him out in the mornings, when her kids get back from school, and then when he pees in the crate or she gets the urge to walk him. I’m sure not everyone treats their dogs this way and I’ve tried to get the dog from her many times although my apartment doesn’t allow pets. Also her dog doesn’t have any aggression he’s literally the sweetest dog ever but he’s always pulling on his leash, barking, and peeing in the crate. None of this is the dogs fault. All of this is the owners fault.

@Nani LVV - I didn’t see this when I posted my reply, but that’s not right. There are cruel uses for crate training like this but if you do it for the right reasons it’s great for the dog. My pup has a great place command for his crate (open door) when people come over. It gives him time to evaluate the situation and if all is good, he’s right out of it and in the business of smooches and pets.

Thanks to a mish-mash of techniques from Will and another trainer, I (nervously, I admit) took my adolescent girl Boo on holiday to the coast (7 hours on a train!!!) and 2 hours on a ferry, without any help. Just me and her, for a month. She now LOVES to swim and seeks out the fountains here in the city to have a quick dip to cool off!

We use “up” for loading and when directing to climb stairs. My 4 yo lab-pitty rescue learns fast and reliably responds to a dozen commands. But we failed on crate training. He’d go in, but would jump and topple the crate. I was worried he would hurt himself so gave up. Gave ourselves a hall pass since he is highly cooperative with the other commands. Wish I had seen your videos on crate training before, as I think we could have been successful. Fortunately he isn’t destructive when we leave him alone. Just sleeps on our bed which is fine because he sleeps with us anyway. Our preference as we love sleeping as a pack.

3 month staff X standard bully mix pup (not my first of this breed). Highly food and toy motivated in the home and garden. Training there is going well, not perfect yet but well. Once outside that environment though it's a different matter completely, it all goes out of the window. She pulls on every walk unless she's unsure of something ie something loud. Wants to sniff everything, to go up to every person and every dog. Isnt interested in treats at all while out even if she takes them she drops and leaves it. She's on a collar and lead so chokes when pulling, we tried a slip lead but she pulled so much that she ended up vomiting. Any tips welcomed because at this moment in time going out isn't fun at all. I don't want to regress to a harness as I know this will only encourage the pulling behaviour, although it will stop her choking untill she learns to heel.

I use “in” and “out” for the truck, front door, back door, going from room to room. Best thing I ever taught my dogs 🤣 My American Bulldog is only 42kg/92lbs but it’s enough to not want to be lifting into pickups 🤣

Do you use a collar or a harness? Surely collar is useful for draft animal only UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
@Rawwhhh
@Rawwhhh Жыл бұрын
@@davepowell7168 I use both on my American Bulldog, the harnesses is solely for lifting him onto and over things from stiles, boulders and out of deep water as our walks are generally beyond adventurous and he’s a stocky lad who can barely swim and whilst he has a 5.5ft vertical jump he’s not so stable on uneven surfaces. My Springer has a slip lead, no harness. She’s full working stock so she never moves more than 10 meters from me anyway and she’s easier/safer to pick up. Neither of my dogs “need” a collar or harness besides legalities. They loose lead walk, they heal, they recall, they have no reactivity and no interest in other dogs or livestock. It’s merely an accessory for legal purposes, thanks to the ever increasing restrictions being put on dogs.

Dogs really should be crate TRAINED - there are situations, when crate will be present, like in vet's office or even as safe space in the house - training will let dogs be less anxious or even to relax in the crate. I'm using it for my american staffordshire terrier - she loves it, that's her safe space to chillout (I never close the crate, only for training reasons).

These videos are very helpful, but I think we're having a bit of trouble with our Goldendoodle. He's about 2 or 3 months old (someone else knows more exactly than I do), but the main irritation is the biting. It's not aggressive, it is playful, but I am worried that if I take my eye off of him he'll bite someone he shouldn't and then it's off to the euphanasia table. Still though, guess I'll keep trying! His bites have gotten -softer- in the last week at least.

For a dog that young its extremely common for them to be bitey, especially when you've got retriever blood in there. For both our lab and our golden we used the redirect method and would put toys in their mouth when they started biting. It takes time, patience and consistency, but eventually they learn what they can and cannot bite. One thing that doesn't get recommended enough though too is enforced nap time. When our golden started getting particularly bitey and running around like a lunatic, it meant he was overtired and needed a nap. Putting him in his crate for an hour or two to nap helped tremendously with the biting as well. Some young pups have a serious case of FOMO and won't nap on their own until they're ready to collapse, and they start getting feisty and acting out when they're over-tired. Someone suggested making my golden puppy nap when he got afternoon zoomies, and as counterintuitive as it sounds, it was nearly miraculous. He'd wake up and be ready to play and much more able to listen and learn rather than being a lunatic land shark.

Hi Will, love your videos. We have a Rottweiler cross Staffy, he is 7 months old and is already a huge dog weighing in at a good 80-85 pounds already. He's got a fantastic temperament and is great with the kids and other dog. The only one issue we have is the initial over stimulation he gets when somebody new comes to the house, or even one of us. He likes to jump up and throw himself all over the person, no aggression at all, just pure excitement. I know this is likely a puppy thing but is there a way to reduce that at all? He's a big dog to be jumping up people and some people are quite intimidated by him. I have clicker trained him for basic commands and performs well with it but when he gets beyond the excitement I can't snap him out of it. Do you have any suggestions please? I don't really want a big 130lbs+ dog jumping on people when he's full sized. Thank you very much

I would put the dog in either his crate or another room where he is out of sight of your guests until you can hear he is being quiet and then when you go to let him out INSIST that your guests ignore him until you say it is okay, your level of expected chill, of course being relative to your needs and expectations. Hope that helps! ❤️

@starfoxloves
@starfoxloves 2 жыл бұрын
Will usually walks them to a place where he can "break" them and then they walk back. If off leash isn't an option, then you would want to switch from the collar to a harness so there's a clear black and white distinction between working and not. But honestly, with a dog that's as driven to work as a gsd, I personally would keep walks to training sessions and your hangout sesh can just be something different. Depending on your specific dog's personality of course! Hope that helps! ❤️

I’d suggest 10 minutes, through out the day. Not intense, she’s growing her growth plates are like jelly. 6 months can become more intense. But teach leash pressure, walking with a leash, basic commands and in time heel. She’s a toddler that’s taking in her environment, and may not be to focused on you in the beginning. Wouldn’t hurt to consult your vet too.
