A tip that has worked for me is my dog was not very food or toy oriented, so instead of feeding them their meal from a bowl and then adding on extra treats during training I just took their daily food amount and used it while training. This means my dog needs to earn his food and that I am the source of his food, if he engages with me his needs are met. I went from a dog distracted dog too engaged with the world around him to pay attention to a dog that is constantly paying attention and checking on me to see if there is something I want from him, it's been a game changer.

I’m a dog trainer, and adapting some methods you display, (going from positive reinforcement only training to) incorporating all four quadrants of canine training has made training my own three dogs not only easier, but loads more fun. The communication in balanced training is so much more clear, honest and it’s all great because it all comes from a place of love. Thank you for your hard work Will! Your guidance and direction has helped me in many ways, and I’ll be sure to relay it to dogs I train and of course pet parents and trainers alike.

I just adopted a dog 3 days ago and it's the funniest thing... he pays no mind to the TV, but if one of your videos is on, he stares at the TV the entire time. I wonder if it's your voice, as other dog training videos don't get his attention. Just wanted to say thank you for your videos, been watching them for a while now. Cheers!

Love this. I do all these things. And while I don't have a perfect dog, I think these essentials are the simple reason why I have such a good dog. One of the biggest things I needed to learn is the power of praise and affection. Due to puppy class and KZfaq videos I was too stuck to mechanically rewarding with food. Which worked, but I learned only later than I have a much more powerful tool. By the way I love that dog Milly that you used in this video. She seems like a good girl.

Greetings Will and family. I work with dogs and dog behavior but don’t yet call myself a behaviorist as I feel there is still so much to learn! Thank you for doing these and I love the words and emojis popping up as it helps stick the info. Your approach is exactly what I have been morphing into and am grateful to see someone who is far ahead of me but also the example of what I want to be. Cheers! virðing

I have 3 year old, working bred GSD. I am not a novice dog owner, She is well trained, very exuberant, 100% recall among livestock and wildlife. I decided to add agility work to our life, as often the weather here in Scotland is WET and windy. Had her hips x-rayed, she's a GSD. Has never shown any symptoms. The vet showed me the x-rays on her mobile phone! Said she had Hip dysplasia. The head of her femur DID look a little "out" of the acetabulum. But then the vet said she had too "force" her legs into position. Next she said my dog can now only go on short, on lead walks, never see a tennis ball, never mind a flirt pole. This life will mentally destroy her. Never to be off lead, we do loose lead walking, to a sheep free field, to play ball, chase a hare, until recall [immediate, no hesitation recall], and at the same speed. Can you suggest something better I could train her to do.

I have a one year old Doberman. She has been with me and my boys for two weeks and she is a monstrous nightmare on a lead. I’ve had head harness, body harness and half choke collar…. all at the same time and she’s spinning in the air or pulling so hard she is on two legs!!!! I’ve had three dog experienced strong men take her for walks… only to refuse to do it again…. One chap had his back put out….I am so excited to try a prong collar as it looks less traumatising than what I’m doing now!!!! And I’m desperate to get her able to walk safely on a lead. I’m in uk… and here if someone just feels scared by her then she could be put down. I’m crying with relief that this might be a solution for us…. She is an absolutely gorgeous dog and has transformed our lives already…. But it could go horribly wrong if I don’t get this training in order. Huge thanks to you for your videos!!! X

My three month old puppy does a pretty good loose leash walk for me, but when we head back towards home he does more pulling! We just keep working on it! He really started to crate train good this week! No messes in crate or house for the last week! He can sit, lay down, sit back up, stay and come. Still need to work more on those but we have only had him for a month! I have gone through advanced obedience training with silent hand signals before with a Lab years ago, but very great full for your knowledge and help!! Thank you!!!

Hi Will, what an amazing video! A complete training guide in 8 min. Thanks to you I managed to train my difficult case dog. My dog is really quickly excited and outside she is a perminent 8 of 10 on excitementlevels. She doesn't pull at all but she really tries to walk in front. I use a sliplead and she walks just 20 cm infront of me. The problem is, when her excitementlevels go up, she forget she is heelwalking and goes to meter + in front resulting in losing the heel walk. When I correct her (by applying quick pressure on the sliplead), you can see that she is stressed with lip licking or yawning. This happens several times every walk and I feel bad giving her this anxious feeling. Her excitement keeps her from trying to walk in front of me even that she knows it comes to a correction which she obviously hate to get. She just can't help herself. She gets lots of excerice and the heelwalk is better on the way back home. How would you handle highly excited but sensitive dogs?

I just want to say I love that you noticed your dogs stress signals and want to respond to them. I run a dog walking business and I have a few ways I keep dogs happy and stress-free during walks. First is getting a longer leash. 20 cm is very little room for her to move her body. My preferred length is at least 6 feet, though some dogs prefer longer. The second is letting them sniff for as long as they want to. Preventing dogs from sniffing or rushing them actually increases their stress levels, whereas allowing them to sniff reduces it. Alexandra Horowitz at barnard college ran an excellent experiment on this recently. The third thing I do is bring something of value to keep them engaged. As much as I like to let them sniff, sometimes I have to be able to get and hold their attention say, while we cross the street or navigate through a crowd. Most dogs value food the most so I always carry treats, and some dogs like tug toys. Oh and the final tip I have, is to give your dog 5 minutes at the start of the walk to sniff and get their energy out before you ask them for any engagement. Happy walking!

Crate training is based on natural pack living in nature, definitely very important. Threshold management. Sit and stay is a state of mind. Recall is the supreme command.

On crate training, for rescues this will save your furniture. Lol. After a bit, the crates became more like dens for my dogs, so when I removed them I had to create a similar space with a bed arranged behind a piece of furniture, like a den.

Thanks Will, I have a rescue kelpie who has sit and down and some stay. His recall is excellent....until he sees something that moves fast! He also barks and runs at motorised things - vacuum, mower etc. He's very bright, and I have him already doing entry way manners - stairs, rooms, gates, car. He is great until there is anyone else or animals around. The thing is that having watched a lot of your youtubes I can work out what I need to do in a lot of cases if I just stop and think what is making him do something. I have him sitting and staying quietly while I turn the mower on and off. Haven't moved it yet though. I am not sure how I will manage his fence jumping when he sees a fast moving bird or kangaroo though. He is so quick that he is over the fence before I can get a word out. Any tips for that? I'm using a long line in the yard to keep him close enough to try and recall but his eye and brain are quicker than me.

Thank you for making these videos! I have gotten a lot of tips and ideas on how to help my puppy :) I have a +1 year old male puppy who has reactivity problems. I started working on them by training first the loose leash walk method. Already seeing BIG results! One behavior issue I haven't seen on you videos is dog dropping to ground when they see other dogs. Mine does this a lot. He goes "limb" so pulling on the leash doesn't really help. I'm sure it will also ease up with loose leash training and better contact between us, but do you have any tips how to work on it for now? Or what to do when he does it?
@cheesebread3

If your dog is dropping to the ground around other dogs, it sounds like he might be scared. It might help to work on his confidence by letting him interact at his own pace with well-socialized dogs you trust.

It’s so funny cause my little dog, yorkie poodle mix, is a bad influence to my Rottweiler. When we walk I’ll tell the rott to stop but the little dog does not listen and he keeps going on when I walk off leash, I keep the leashes on Incase but let them walk freely. The rott loves him even tho they never play together cause when we walk and the small dog is behind he always looks back for him and even stop if he’s out of view

I strongly believe that only 10% of dog owners care one flippin bit about their dogs behavior and how it effects others while in public. Most owners aren't willing to put the time into training nor even the most basic daily rituals of walking their dog to drain some energy from them. They think a trip to their local dog park is about all they are good for and it's a sad, sad thing because in the end we know who looses out, THE DOGS. It's to bad that we can't employee that to own a dog that both the dog and the owner be licensed and that there will be consequences in the event their dog acts out and harms another dog or person. We know that would lead to fewer people owning a dog and more would be put down as a result but whats it going to take to get dog owners that are not engaged with their pet to do so and in the end make it a better world for dogs and their owners to co-exist in. Just my 2 cents as a long time owner that has seen it all, great video as usual you hit some very important points. Thank you.
