As for tip number 6, house them as a pair! Too often you see people mention 1-2 or even 1-3 as 'best practice'. I've got a couple of pairs that if I wouldn't stop them they'd raise 5-6 clutches, which wouldn't be good for the hen's health. Also tip number 7 (but its for bird keeping in general) don't breed too many young, always keep in mind the space you'd need to foster them. If you start breeding something for the first time start with 1, maybe 2, pairs. This is part of the reason I'm preventing them from raising more clutches, I don't have the space to house another 20 adult quail. They'll get their next round next year if the space becomes available again ;)

You are completely right I had tip number 6 in mind but totally forget. Tip 7 is also a good addition, thanks.

I am afraid if I put a pair together the male will not stop mating with the female and he will kill her. Even now that I have 5 females and one male I think the male is too much for them.

You have button quail, don’t you? I have coturnix quail but they love their coop much better than a cage. They are so cute! The only thing about the coop is that it’s a tack or rabbit wire type with 1/2 inch squares. The cage actually had bars and they would stick their little heads through and look around. They liked that much better. Now they always peck at the wire like little psychos because they can see the other side but can’t reach anything. Because of this, I’m actually thinking about making them a run so they can explore a bit more. My other setup was 2 rabbit cages with square wire bottom. I kept them inside in one and put them in a small dog crate (8 birds) and had another cage outside in the grass with the bottom removed, so they were spoiled. They’re outside all the time now on the carport and have no grass, all sand floor. I gave them a rosemary plant but they still want to be in the grass I left growing beside the coop.

@@wardrobelion my quail also really want the grass that is outside my pen, so I started growing sprouted chia in trays in the kitchen. I give them a tray to peck at and enjoy every so often. they really like it! I also planted some tuft grasses that are resilient to their digging, inside their aviary, they really love that too! I think next I will try some different weeds/grasses, like scurvy weed to plant. or some long tall drooping blade grasses, in pots with caves underneath.

Dear Mr. Aviary, I have said it before, and I will say it again, I very much enjoy following how the birds in your aviary are doing. This video was of great interest to me, because I like quail, these little ‘chickens’. You gave those interested very good advice. I was particularly interested that one should have naturally-raised quail in order to have them set. This doesn’t surprise me. Like many breeds of chickens, the setting instinct has been bred out of them. You have a lovely apiary, and, if I were a quail, I would be happy to have a home in it. It was very nice to see that the hen hatched five chicks this time. I hope they all thrive. Sincerely, Larry

Thank you for a very educational video :). I have a few pairs of kingquails that never wanted to brood or start nesting on their cages. As soon as i let them free in the greenhouse they made nests and are now caring for their second group of little baby quails. So, like you said, the environment is very important to get them broody. Even the fathers are great and are helping with taking care of the chicks.

Since I moved my coturnix quail to a coop under the carport I have one that stays in the nest box. The Roo even chases her back up there when she comes down to the run. I think he chose her as the brooder. She has 9 eggs now but isn’t ready to set on them yet. She’s not very old but has been the broody one of the hens since she started laying eggs about 2 months ago. I think she’ll start setting on then soon🥰

I have 6 quails in a 5 meter long run but I take them sometimes to a mobile cage and pull them around the garden to discover every corner and eat as much worms and bugs as they can find. They enjoy it so much, that they start to jump around if they see me coming :) They know, I'll take them for a "walk" :)

Came here because I found about 5 eggs in my garden box. The next day there were 7. Now there are 11. I had been growing zinnias in the box and first discovered the eggs while watering the flowers. The day I found the 7 eggs, I frightened a quail that had been sitting on them and she(?) ran away. I spilled some kettle popcorn in the box and then thought maybe I shouldn't interfere. After a couple days the quail came back and laid the remaining eggs. Now we are in this routine of the zinnias baking in the sun all day until the quail leaves so I can water them. She comes back some time before I get up in the morning because when I come out (even as early as 5am), she's already sitting on them. I don't know how to care for quails and I think she's probably got it all under control but I also don't want to do any harm. My flowers are shot to hell. Their watering schedule is so off and they look bad but I don't want to upset the Mom sitting on the eggs by attempting to water around her. It's over 100 degrees out. I'm afraid to offer food because: (a.) I don't want to upset the natural order she probably is used to and (b.) I don't want to attract predators or pests to disturb the environment. Any advice?

When I used to have an aviary, I couldn't get the King Quail to breed no matter what until i planted it out. Almost as soon as they had some natural cover they started making and keeping nests. No special food was provided. I always made sure to have one female more than males. A word of warning that newly-hatched King Quail will escape through 'budgie wire' like it's not even there.

Hey Mr. Aviary, I got four quail about 2 weeks ago and they have seemed fine. I keep them in a wabbitat cage with some hay and leaves at the bottom to rest their feet occasionally. I also have a box with holes for their food and a metal water dispenser for water. For their bath, I give them paper shreds which they LOVE!! and every wednesday I give them their sandbath, for a day to go crazy in their sand 😂 I am going to breed them and sell eggs to make some cash ( note i dont have a job, im a little young even though i keep my quails alive somehow 🙃) I am soon going to try and make a cage similar to yours soon, when i have some wood and wire to make it with. Hi I'm new to owning button quails, so here is my question. can you please ,tell me some ways to cover and protect the head of one of my females as she's nearly lost all here head feathers and is becoming seperated from the rest of my quails . They have been all living together in a super large indoor quail- bird- room. I bought them 5 months ago from someone who wanted to dispose of them as he had too many, (so it was more of a rescue) so I got his group of 3 males and 2 females which always was fine, until recently when one male was getting aggressive towards his partner quail when mating. ????? Seperating her from this group has not worked and only caused extreme depression in her. So I'm wondering if there is something I can put on her tiny head (that is now bald and bleeding a small bit. ) To at least let it heal without going through the stress of it constantly being picked open, or in having to separate her again.. and than at least she can stay in the group but her head can heal everytime he mates so aggressively with her.
@MrAviary
@MrAviary 9 ай бұрын
Quails are not Group animals so I don't think she is depressed. You should only keep them in pairs maybe trios but then 2 females. No more than 1 male per cage. Please separate them and maybe the female with one other females and don't put any male with her until her head is fully healed, but make sure the other female is leaving her alone as well

Hi! I have 4 (3 hens and one rooster) and the local pet store has two roosters that have been there for forever and i feel bad for them. Since my rooster will only mate with one hen, would it be possible to get the two pet store males for the other hens, or will they fight? I do have three cages so I could separate them into pairs, but if I do that currently (leaving the mated pair in one cage and the other girls in another) they will call to each other and be sad all night until I move them back in with one another. Would getting the two roosters be a bad idea?
@MrAviary
@MrAviary Жыл бұрын
It is not wise to put Multiple roosters in one cage so you have to seperate them. The calling will be less after a while they do that because they are in un unfamiliar place and call to check on each other. If they get more familiar and still have a mate or friend they will call less

I had a question in regards to breeding and maintaining the health of the brids, especially hens. Is it a good idea to keep a pair together for life, or is it best to split the pair after a time so that the hens can recover for a time? When I kept coturnix, it was different. I had multiple birds together, but only because I had a large enough space for them, plus plenty of hiding spots as well as plenty of food and water. And yes, I always monitored the birds for signs of bullying, sickness, etc. But since these are buttons, I was curious and had to ask for anytime in the future, and everyone always had different opinions with different outcomes, some often very similar that it might as well be set as a gold standard. I want to make sure that I plan things accordingly, as I intend to put my future pets to work (and by 'work', I mean to use in an enclosed garden bed for pest control and fertilizing my garden, using it as recreational.activity for my birds before beinging them back indoors for the day). Ypur thoughts on the matter, as well as the question in the beginning. Any advice would surely help me out as an urban homesteader of sorts. Thanks!

Hi, I leave them together year round. However sometimes the males can get a little too excited and then I separate them for only a couple of weeks. Using them as pest control and fertilizer is a good idea however button quails are much more skittish and don't like to be moved often. This makes them really stressful so be aware of that.

@MrAviary Thanks, this really helps me out. I tried this once with my coturnix as I raised them as chicks and were used to moving constantly. Perhaps it would be to stick with coturnix as they're much larger. But again, thanks for the advice!

So, lots and lots of stress for a bird (they are tame, they handled it very well). I even decided to skip hatching eggs myself this season and focus on chicken chicks to add to my indoor aviary. To help with quail breeding. Specifically for that purpose.. I had the chicks ONE week And my hen started sitting on her eggs and even laid 2 eggs outside of the nest and chased away her man (I have to emergency buy extra hens for my poor man). She is trying to hatch her clutch! Amidst all ado! 😂 Quail are something special ❤❤

One of my female button quail went broody for about 2 days and then she just abandoned the nest. It is currently winter and my quail are not laying eggs. I am pretty much doing everything mentioned in the video so how can I make my quail go broody?

It is always possible, the exception makes the rules in nature. But it is not their natural instinct. Closest I have had is that the male incubated the eggs next to his female. I think this was more to be close to his mate than really to incubate the eggs.
@coop5329
@coop5329 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAviary I have one male now that does this. He sits right up against the hen while she is incubating, so he does in fact end up sitting on some of the eggs. He is also good with the babies; a lot of males can't be trusted with them. Over the years I have selectively bred from the males who are least aggressive to the hens and chicks, and also chosen as breeders the calmest birds who did the least "head banging". I have found that temperament is very inheritable in my poultry, including chickens, turkeys, the button quail, and pigeons. I have my own strain of chickens with nonaggressive roosters that do not ever attack humans including small children. My button quail at this point almost never take fright and "head bang"; they are much, much calmer than the ones I started with.

If they are displaying their natural behavior, breeding and sitting on their eggs, then I don't see what's so sad about it. Sad is when they're forced to stand on wire, because "that's easier to clean up".
