Do you want to successfully set goals with your employees? Goals that will actually be achieved? But you don't know exactly how and what to pay attention to?
It is not easy to agree on goals with employees in such a way that they actually implementand achieve them.
A lot of managers even do not know how to set goals: In most companies, the goal setting works as follow:
Top-Management develops a strategy based on the company's vision. Then goals are derived from the strategy: strategic, tactical and operational goals. These goals are then broken down into areas and departments and then the bosses set these goals for their employees or - which is much better - agree on goals with their employees.
The idea behind it is: Goals help the employer to ensure that everyone - the employees as well as the boss - pull in the same direction and know which way to go.
So talking about goals helps to clarify on where to go. However, they must be the right goals and it also depends on how to deal with the goals.

I hardly have even goals for myself but now as a manager I have to set goals for me and the whole team. What a steep learning curve

Bernd, Should these goals be set as a face-to-face conversation with the employee and supervisor, or should this be done via email exchanges?

If possible I would always set goals together in a face-to-face meeting. Online Calls via zoom or teams etc. work as well, but I would not do it via email. The reason is: You need the discussion between the employee and the supervisor.

How do you cascade goals when they're not clear?

clarify the goals first and set up a clear structure starting with the end in mind. then you can cascade from one goal to the next from start to finish
