I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

I'd imagine the internet there is at least decent for installing games, but not online gaming. Fun to imagine that when not on the clock, a bunch of researchers having a Halo Slayer Game Night amongst themselves lol. The oldest guy in his 50s or smth, never played a game, having the most skill surprisingly when behind the joysticks of a shooter

If you've never used satellite internet, count yourself blessed. Modern systems have decent bandwidth (i.e. per-bit speed), but latency is horrible... nothing can escape physics. (25k mi is a long way out, and another 25k or so to the downlink) I wouldn't want to see USAP/NSF's bill :-) And weather can really mess with it.

Hi Viktor, thanks *so* much for sharing your times on the ice, I look forward to each and every video. You're the perfect host for these, you're upbeat, knowledgeable, man I could go on and on. I have several hundred questions I'd like to ask you, but I'll stick with just a couple for now. Are the Winter Overs considered a privileged assignment you have to earn or are they regarded as the worst of duties ? Can you request a winter placement or are they assigned to you and you get what you're given ? Would it be possible for a first timer to go straight to winter over or would they have to work a summer first ? Finally, at the risk of blowing more smoke up your ass, I find your Antarctic videos interesting and inspiring and wish there lots more but I understand you're there to do a job of work, heck the NSF should make this part of your job description.

Wow thank you so so much for this incredibly kind comment!! It really means a lot and it makes me so happy that you’re enjoying the videos 😊 As far as questions go, I’d be happy to answer! So winter is a toss up. There a plenty of people in places like McMurdo that find wintering at Pole absolutely crazy and they think it would be a nightmare, but on the other hand there are people that have it as one of their life goals. So it’s definitely subjective. And you can definitely apply for a winter job and get one on your first time down. Our plumber is currently on his first time down and he showed up just a month before we closed for the winter. But some other positions would prefer that you spend a full summer here first to really learn the systems, especially if you’re doing things like being a research associate. So it depends on the job and need. Some jobs are definitely harder to fill than others and it can be a scramble. So yeah, it’s definitely subjective and every single year is different. We got really lucky this year with an all star crew. It’s the most returners that have ever wintered before on one crew, so that’s pretty neat!! Thanks again, seriously it means a lot! And I hope you keep providing content you enjoy 😊😊😊

SpaceX is launching it's Gen2 satellites with satellite to satellite laser linking. The first launch went into polar orbit. I hope it eventually brings Antarctica reliable, high speed, low latency internet service.

When you say 12-14 hours of internet per day does that mean you personally? Can you use your phone or personal laptop with the internet? Is it super slow? Great video, all these videos from the South Pole are fascinating.

First of all, thank you for the compliments! I’m glad you are enjoying the video ☺️ But nah. That internet is station wide. So that’s all that we all have during the day. Technically, some people, like the station manager have access to things like iridium email, which gives them email 24 hours per day, but it’s limited to very small text messages. So no pictures or anything. Otherwise, those 12-14 hours is all we’ve got.

Thank you so much!! And yeah, it's really not too bad. The hardest part is probably the isolation and not having access to food and such. And some people struggle with the lack of sun for sure! But thanks! And I definitely will tell him you said hi! ☺️

@@GoneVenturing Listen, something occurred to me, few weeks back (July 10) was the OneMoreOrbit world record over the poles flight, and I believe they flew over you that day. It would be fantastic if you had a camera or something that caught that flight! The exact time is: Crossing the south pole at 20:40 GMT on July 10th I hope you or someone else had a camera pointed at the sky at that time!!

no, Im sorry. Your videos aren't just one long video. you take multiple shots and then take time to do a lot of great editing, and give us fun and interesting videos. so you may not have the time every week to upload some longer ones. You have much work and stuff to do, and so much going on over there, plus all the time it takes for you to have to put on and take off ten layers of clothing, just to go outside, I'm appreciative for any videos. Short or long. So, I'm sorry if I sounded selfish and ungrateful. The fun facts were quite interesting actually. Especially understanding how the satellite sharing and you being able to get internet are kinda complex. So thank you for your time and effort into ALL your videos you share with us. Stay safe and stay warm my friend.

Is that two two minute showers per day or week? That would be rough after a workouts if it’s the latter.

Per. Week. They're serious about water usage. (Go to McMurdo if you want a little more "urban" setting. They have a full city scale waste water system. It _is_ a small city.)

How can you stay clean with only a couple 2 minutes showers? Especially with a sauna and a gym on station I imagine you would have to take more showers than that.

@@GoneVenturing Why do they bother having shower cubicles in the connecting bathrooms ? During summer they'd be used by 4 people for a total of 16 minutes a week. Wouldn't it be better, for morale, if the shower was replaced by a second toilet and then have the bathroom partitioned ? Each two person cabin would get their own private bathroom and folks could use communal showers, say a couple on each level. For non-essential facilities that get used 16 mins a week they consume a lot of resources, they've gotta be maintained etc.
