I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

The green house at the Amundsen Scott South Pole Station has the only plants growing at the South Pole. Outside the station it is way too cold for any plants to grow. One advantage of growing tomatoes in this South Pole Green House is the tomato plants will never get infested with Tomato Horn Worms. When my family tried to grow tomatoes in our home garden, the plants quickly got infested with Tomato Horn Worms. It must be nice to have fresh greens and tomatoes from the Green House during those long dark winters.

Glad to see they got a new grow light system in. I had a company set to provide a new system for A.S. summer of 2015, but couldn't get the upper management to pull the trigger.

Another great video. I can only imagine how good it feels to be there in the winter, being able to have some nature where you don’t have any around the base.

Oh for sure! It’s pretty great! Like I said, sadly I don’t use the place nearly enough. But I definitely love it when I do 😊

Wow! I'm impressed that you guys managed to harvest 10 kg of produce each week! That would stop some of the "greens" and "freshy" cravings. I'm surprised that McMurdo don't have one.

Right?!?! it's pretty amazing honestly. And McMurdo actually used to have one but they got rid of it. Not exactly sure why...

Gone Venturing That is a shame. But maybe McMurdo has more supply runs and bigger stock of food. Anyway, do you get eggs there?

From base tour video. If I miss grocery shopping and have no fresh vegetables or fruit for a day, I feel so devastated. Can’t imagine longing for it all winter! Thank you for sharing your important work. Hope you can get extra veggies when you volunteered!

Every main station in Antarctica should have a green house.
@alexanderstone9463
@alexanderstone9463 Күн бұрын
The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty implicitly forbids it. You are not allowed to import any foreign organisms to Antarctica that may escape and go feral. This paradoxically restricts where such foreign organisms may be grown to only those stations in the harshest climates.

I hope you base will be able to have more solar power arrays. Of course getting renewable energy down there would be a challenge then again if they can get solar panels working in outer space it should be a fewer less challenging.

With no insects, how are the garden plants pollinated to produce the eatable items.

Hand pollination I assume? I reckon they got enough time on their hands.

How do you pollinate without bees
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 4 жыл бұрын
We don't need them! So I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I'm guessing the seeds are already fertilized. They just need water and such to start growing!
@samrusoff
@samrusoff 4 жыл бұрын
@@GoneVenturing I think Niki means that once the plants have grown, in order to produce fruit, the blooms typically need to be pollinated. Some plants can self pollinate fairly easily, maybe that's the case for your tomatoes, others can pollinate just by wind/breeze. Next time you're overwintering, if you have the time, try brushing the flowers with a q tip and then transferring pollen to other flowers. it can have a big impact on fruit set and quality, that may have helped previous crews harvest 16kg in one week!

@@GoneVenturing not exactly your movement around the tomato flowers causes pollination. thx for doing the video. I use for my class. Gene Giacomelli

Does the air in the greenhouse, smell fresh?
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it definitely smells fresher than the rest of the station! 😜 I wouldn't say it smells fresh like being in the real world, because it is still artificial in the sense that there is no soil and such. But yeah, comparatively, it definitely does! You can smell the plants, and it's super refreshing ☺️

I don’t know about the South Pole, but using another one at McMurdo (it had one before but it was decommissioned) may cause diplomatic problems with New Zealand.

That's why there's isn't a greenhouse at McMurdo anymore! Half the greenhouse was taken up with "pot" plants! The hippy scientist stayed stoned and ate the entire season's food rations the first month! More Ben and Jerry's, Cool Ranch Doritos and Taco Bell had to be flown in to keep them from going postal on each other!
