How many metal guitar riffs have you come up with only to not do anything with them?
You like the riff. But you don't love it. It's as if there's something missing from the riff. And you can't quite figure out how to make that riff into a metal song.
In this video, I'm giving 5 metal riff writing ideas. The cool thing is you can add these concepts to your own riffs to come up with a better riff or expand on that riff.
Riff Idea 1: This is a simple idea of just changing the picking technique in the riff. We added one gallop, which is an alternate-picking method.
Riff Idea 2: We added some color to this metal riff here by changing the 2nd note of some of the power chords. We talk a lot about this in our metal songwriting course (link below).
Riff Idea 3: Here we changed the picking method entirely to turn a heavy metal song into a death metal song with tremolo picking single notes instead of downstrokes and power chords.
Riff Idea 4: We added more dynamics to this metal guitar riff with two ideas. One is chopping up that first power chord picking back and forth between those notes for the E minor chord. Next, we let the C and D power chords ring out.
Riff Idea 5: Lastly, and a personal favorite meal songwriting strategy of mine, is we modulated the riff and played it in a different key. We also share many examples of how you can do this in our metal songwriting course below.
