5 Myths About Chinchillas...busted!

Hi my name is Ally and in this video I am discussing some misconceptions about chinchillas that are widely spread on the internet. From average life span to care of their feet.
I am not a vet and have no medical training but I have owned chinchillas for a 28 years and have been breeding them nearly as long.
I make these videos just to share my knowledge of chinchillas.

Very good video🙏. There is a lot of drama in all the chinchilla groups on FB and we need to spread knowledge so that our fluff kids can be well taken care of 💗

well done as Always Miss Ally!! Eagerly awaiting when You see Yourself with the eyes we see You with! Beautiful, unique, intelligent, loving, empathetic darling Woman!!! I agree that healthful natural treats like sanitized, dried, sterilized blackberry leaves, stems & branches from safe trees, rose petals are best. However I did need to resort to SMALL pieces of organic raisins as I gave my 2 grrrls who lived to 20 & over daily probiotics which I used the teeny piece of raisin to 'absorb' & hold the probiotics. They would take it from a syringe but it was so much easier to just smash it into the itty bitty raisin per day. Their diet otherwise was pellets, Timothy hay as much as they would eat & waste ;-) 1 small rose petal in the morning & probiotic raisin bit at evening time. We were all healthy & Happy!! Had wire floors in a special cage I built with a removable sliding tray under the floor for easy cleaning. Cage was 2' deep x 4' wide x 3' high with several levels of shelves & beds & ramps. It is for sale now as at 69yo I probably won't be here long enough to take care of another dear friend. Sad but their care is #1 importance!! Much love & prayers coming Your way dear Ally!! Thank you for the video! Very informative. Could you please do a review on Savic Suite Royal 95 cage. How would you style it, would you recommend it?

I have never had a royal savic cage but will look in to it. If I can get hold of one I would definitely do a review. But I have just done a quick search for it and every site I have looked at says it's unavailable 😔

@@AllysAnimalAntics thank you for taking the time to look at it! It's the only cage that is similar to the ones you use that is available in my country. There is also a bigger version called savic royal suite XXL. If you do get the chance to get it, I would really love to see the review! Another cage that is also available is Zolux Indoor2 Mini loft. I live in Serbia, and there aren't that many cages that are fully metal. Most of them have a lot of plastic parts

Hello Ally, you always have informative content for chinchillas. I am enjoying watch them. I watched most of your chinchilla video before adopting 3 girl chinchillas. Mother with 2 daughters. Now, if I adopt another girl chinchilla, is it possible to bond them and live in one cage? Your video for bonding was one to one. Thank you.

@@yun3235It is possible , it is slightly harder to bond a new chinchilla to an existing bonded pair but not impossible. I have bonded trios many times . You use exactly the same method as you would bonding 2 chinchillas , either side by side or with the smooshing method. I have had success using the smooshing method when bonding trios.

Thank you so much for your reply Ally. The girl chinchilla is from the animal shelter. How do I know if she is healthy? She looks Ok to me. Should I quarantine her first and for how long?and can I put her cage in the same room with the trio’s cage for quarantine? I did my research but not much help info on the web.

I adopted two male chins 2 1/2 years ago who were a pair, but had to be split due to fighting. Since then I feel my little chin misses having a cage mate and I’m still debating whether to get a 3rd chin to try and bond him with. He is a lot more withdrawn since the split, however we have also discovered he has elongated tooth roots. We are currently syringe feeding him meds and feed (vets advice was to give him a chance) and he’s doing really well, however do you have any advice on the best way to remove critical care from a chinchillas front? I’ve been giving extra sand baths and have show dust mixed with the standard dust.

I'm sorry your chinchilla is having dental issues. With regards to removing critical care from the front of a chinchilla, really regular dust baths are the easiest way to remove the critical care or at least reduce the amount of critical care on the fur. With my chinchillas when they have had a dust bath the critical care can become dry and crusty on the fur I use a wire comb to just gently comb out some of the excess critical care. It smartens up their fur quite a bit.

Awesome video! Someone told me before that chinchillas should drink out of a bowl rather than a bottle because it's more natural and then someone else told me that a bottle is better. Which is true?

A water bottle is always best, they would just jump in a water bowl and their fur would get wet, which is not good for a chinchilla.

Hi Ally are DRIED APPLE SLICE TREATS ok for chinchillas and if so how often can he have them?

No unfortunately not, chinchillas love dried apple but it has too much sugar for them

Do you think having chins in same sex pairs better than a single chin? Some breeders say it’s fine either way so as using or not using wheels in a cage for adult chins

wheels are built for much smaller animals as a rule. The wheel causes bad pressure on their spines etc so no wheel size that is commonly sold. It would need to be special made LARGE to be healthy with all safety concerns covered like having components open where they could get caught etc... but I was able to find a saucer that allows them to run full length!! It was AMAZING! I taught my 16yo grrl to run on it & she enjoyed it! Unfortunately I could not afford the good metal one that would have lasted much better & been safer so I ended up buying the cheaper plastic one from petco nearly every yr & she didn't use it that much. but there are options

I do think chinchillas are happier with the company of other chinchillas. But some chinchillas do okay on their own it's really down to their personalities. Some chinchillas will not tolerate cage mates and some really with draw without a cage mate. Using a wheel is not mandatory, don't listen to anyone that tells you it is, don't get me wrong there are a lot of pros to using a wheel but there are also a and lot of cons. Maybe I should do a video on wheels

Thank you for your videos! Just a suggestion... I do imagine this must be an older recording with the mask, but next time, maybe keep the mask off so it's easier to understand what you're saying ❤❤❤

I understand what You are saying & I agree I want to see her entire beautiful face!! If You have been watching her channel very long then You know that she NEVER showed her face at all before 2020. I spoke to her about the mask & how it is hurtful to me to see her covering her face like that. She replied so tenderly & graciously that she was doing her best to share what she could share of herself at this time. I have empathy for her being a person myself who has never allowed pics to be taken of me for my life as I believed myself to be hideously ugly & no one, especially me, would be able to stand gazing upon me. So I get where she is & watching her progress over the yrs... I say if we all pray, encourage & tell her how much we love her & want her to trust us enough that she can share her whole self with us.... one day she will!! YAH!! so... be patient while our flower blooms!!!

Normally I would have a lav mic on which givese much clearer audio. But it broke last week so I had to rely on my cameras audio which isn't the best. I am investing in some new equipment though so audio quality should be better 🙂
