Anxiety is normal even healthy when it *matches* the task at hand. We all get nervous when starting a new job or having to give a speech. However if the same level of anxiety is triggered when you're simply in a grocery store, then that's when it becomes a problem.

I really think this should be said, anxiety, anger and guilt are all emotions. On the other hand whilst narcissism and psychopathy are on a spectrum they are still considered disorders. Although there maybe benefits to them no person who wishes to be a functioning part of society should strive to be more in touch and build on their inner narcissist.

@UCxtwRR1fIife1HaR-Br17OQ remember that psychopathology in a psychiatric sense is not synonymous with the "psychopath" killer you know from popular culture. You don't have to be a murderer to possess psychopathic traits. As Anna says, a spectrum of detachment can allow you to deal with situations other people may find crippling or traumatic, such as being an ER Doctor and dealing with horrific injury after horrific injury for a living. Similarly, you'd be a pretty bad soldier if you weren't able to compartmentalize killing people. Obviously in the current climate people will jump on the Police Officer comment, but again whilst not 100% applicable since there are both good and bad officers across the entire world, a Police Officer in any country is pretty much always tasked with dealing with the worst that society has to offer and will repeatedly encounter people at their lowest moment in life. This doesn't make all Police Officers natural murderers or fighters since you could deal with a child abuser one call and then a suicidal person the next, but can be a desirable trait because we would of course want our officers to do what was required to protect innocent people if the time came, and to be able to keep a clear head under pressure or during horrific situations that regular people are fleeing from. Some of the highest mentally demanding jobs in the world require tapping into psychopathic traits without automatically making that person capable of cold-blooded murder.

5 Negative Traits That Are Good For You: 1. Anxiety - stimulates our brains to be more vigilant, detail orientated, and heightens perception. Also can improve vision and hearing 2. Anger - receiving anger increases quality and originality of our ideas 3. Guilt - motivates us to repair damage we may have inflicted and helps us respect moral boundaries 4. Narcissism - more likely to reach ambitious goals as narcissists feel more entitled to success and are less impeded by self doubt 5. Psychopathic - lack of emotional attachments allows psychopaths to better handle crises and make better leaders as they are more persuasive and take more risks Makes sense that traits normally seen as negative have positive aspects - there are two sides to every coin! One of my few favorite quotes are "Everything is poison, all that matters is the dose" / "Anger isn't bad or good, it's how we use it." / "You wan to bring back someone you lost. You might want money. Maybe you want a lover or you might want to protect the world. These are all common things people want. Things that their hearts desire. Greed may not be good, but not so bad either. You human think greed is only for money and power, but everyone want something they don't have" / "Even a talent you are ashamed of can be a source of confidents if you use it for helping someone else " / "Life is made of 2 parts, half-happiness and half- hardship" As long as we have self-control and are aware of our actions. Good things do come from the least likely places.

This is very similar to what my therapist has been telling me, no emotion is good or bad, they're either comfortable or uncomfortable. We label some emotions as bad or negative because they made us feel uncomfortable but they're just as important as comfortable emotions because they are there to tell us something. It's important to take the time to listen to our emotions, even when it's hard, figure out why they're there, and then decide if we need to listen to them or not. We're allowed to feel sad, anxious, scared, angry or guilty and then decide for ourselves if what they're telling us to do or not to do is actually beneficial to us or harmful to us. It's not easy to do but it's important to look at our emotions simply as emotions and try not to judge them when they come up, noticing them and taking from them what we need to feel whole.

I mean, yes, the integration of all emotions and character traits is most beneficial, but when "negative" emotions become strong, intense, and exacerbated by stress, they lead to unfavorable actions and worsen your current circumstances. Likewise, the traits you mentioned, when working in unison and not against patience and compassion and such, can help people become more successful, but again, once a disordered state is reached, one's mental state needs to return to a healthier equilibrium to avoid catastrophic repercussions of abuse and violence.

Wholeness in relating to our emotions; this is actually called integrity or the habit of being integrated. Integrity is actually misrepresented as being "moral" or being "honest". These are only the outward wrappings integrity. Being integrated, with healthy boundaries and a "whole" sense of self and a healthy self esteem, is actually where integrity, being integrated, is found. There is a small movement spread out through the self help, mindfulness, and self aware teachings around the world that speaks to this. Another word that pretty much means the same thing is "Authenticity."

Also, come on! We can't possibly put anxiety and narcissism/psychopathy in the same is same basket. They're worlds apart in terms of how many lives they can potentially destroy.

I don't think the problem was ever these traits in and of themselves. It's when they get out of balance/control and have negative and detrimental consequences on oneself, others, or society. Ie being anxious about say a test vs having crippling anxiety. Being angry to empower you to defend yourself or protect someone being taken advantage of vs a neurosis and not being able to control your anger.

I realize with my social anxiety (I had it for years) honestly it gives you an extra sense that you can use to get a “message” from people within your surroundings..you can become more of a empath

Ironically, psychopaths are more likely to be the heroes in a bad situation happening within a crowd because they're not so worried about what everyone thinks, and more importantly, the bystander effect (of everyone hoping someone else does something) doesn't seem to affect them either.

Pretty sure psychopaths don’t have difficulty with showing remorse or empathy, they just choose not to. Same goes for inability to distinguish between right and wrong, the choice can be made without the hinderance of future remorse. Also think of it this way, a psychopath can choose to show empathy for a brief time, thus being able to better manipulate someone else. I’m sure you have heard a friend complain about their psycho ex who would switch their emotions on/off just to keep them in the relationship.

Yesss. most disorders are harming oneself but not others. On the other hand, the dark triad is exploiting everyone else, and they should not be affirmed. Manipulation is always a choice, they just choose not to care purely for the sake of their own benefits.

Just a note that some of the inference from these studies is culturally dependent. ‘Leadership’ for example, may not be considered to have the same value criteria from one culture to another.

Anyone who has ever had REAL anxiety of course wants this potentially life threatening state of mind to go away and stay away forever. And people who live with fear and anxiety are very unfortunate and are missing out on a lot in life.

So much of that is going to be taken out of context and added as fuel to the fire of people that actually suffer those traits to toxic degrees.
