According to the owner and Bettman’s press conference, the plan is to do a two stage renovation to bring the capacity up to 17,000 for hockey. They want to stay downtown and that would be impossible if building a new facility.

They need a name, if not it’s ridiculous, the thrashers had less time, they sold in late may, and they came out with a jersey in late July 2011

Yeah, but they already had a history with Jets hockey in Winnipeg. I agree that there is enough time for Utah to come up with a name, but it’s not as simple as it was when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg.

I see no reason SLC can’t quickly evolve into a hotbed. For starters, to say that the state of Utah is hungry for another pro sports team would be a major understatement. And, secondly, some of those people that are agnostic about the NHL going to Utah are the same people that said Vegas would never work. The Utah Yeti or Blizzard would be my preferred choices. As for the colors, I would personally go with purple and light blue.

I would vote for the Utah Gulls. The official state bird of Utah is the California Gull. That one state's bird carries another state's name is odd, but there's a reason behind that choice. In the early days of settlement, they were supposedly afflicted by a locust swarm that threatened to destroy all of their crops and starve the people to death. They prayed for deliverance, and a flock of gulls arrived in the area and ate the locusts. Those gulls were later named California Gulls by the ornithological community. I don't know for certain that these events happened, but they are part of Utah legend. The account is connected to the Mormon church, and maybe neither the city nor the NHL wants to lean into Salt Lake City's Mormon heritage that much. I don't live in Utah, and I'm not a member of the LDS Church. However, I think the legend is a neat aspect of Utah heritage. I think Utah Gulls would work very well as a team name because of that connection to the past. I might not ever get to attend a game, but I would consider becoming a fan and buying a jersey. A name that would fit better with Utah's modern tourism industry would be Utah Canyoneers. While we think of canyons as being more a part of the topography of southern Utah, the entire state has some big canyons. Many people like going to Utah to participate in the sport of canyoneering which is the fancy name for hiking and exploring canyons. I could be happy enough with the Utah Pioneers, but that name wouldn't excite me as much. The other names all seem clichè.
@UtahPropertyWorksАй бұрын
Canyoneers is a new idea that I could support. Imagine jerseys with Aaron Ralston as the mascot!
@VTPSTTUАй бұрын
@@UtahPropertyWorks My health has failed, so I'm not involved in canyoneering. I don't know who Aaron Ralston is, so I guess I can't imagine that. Of course, I figure that you are joking anyway about making a particular person the mascot. I would imagine a logo that featured a cartoon canyon with people climbing the canyon walls or just wading in water. I see the whole DEI thing as largely stupid. To reflect the fact that much of canyoneering is done by white men and hockey is a sport of white men, the principle character should be a white man portrayed in a positive way. At the same time, "canyoneers" would fit with multiple characters in the logo, and female and minority characters could be portrayed in a way that wouldn't turn the whole logo into a political statement. Many sports fans are tired of politics being dragged into sports. This name and logo would be a departure from traditional types of team marketing. Canyoneering is seen as a new-ish sport and a non-traditional sport in the sense of it not having a scoreboard. The idea would be very out of the box, and maybe it wouldn't work. Overall, hockey people are somewhat traditional. On the other hand, the idea would be a rejection of clichés, and that might appeal to Salt Lake City. For the state of Utah, the logo would be a chance to introduce people to the sport and possibly build more tourism. Of course, canyoneering is one of those activities that becomes less enjoyable when too many people start filling the canyons.

Austin is not going to get an NHL team. Anyone who's actually familiar with Texas knows that just because Houston isn't "trendy" doesn't mean it's not fit for a team. It's a massive market with far more infrastructure and land options than Austin, which is hopelessly crowded and doesn't have the space for a new large arena unless it's built 30+ minutes from city center.
@BlastholeАй бұрын
Yet again. It's like you look at Cliff notes from some obscure report and then make up some conclusions based on that. No new arena is planned, they are going to renovate the old one to stay down town. Should end up with 17.5k unobstructed seats by the end. Trademarks filed for yeties and outlaws as well. Jazz attendance is crazy, 290+ sellouts in a row with a team that just finished the season on a 13 game LOSING streak. Officials from the league and team want to make sure this gets branded correctly since you really only have one shot. So yes, no name first year. Since this team took 6 weeks to come to Utah rather than 2 years like a normal expansion, there just hasn't been time to find a name. This is the 2nd and last video I watch from you on this topic.. It's clear you would rather be early in reporting than accurate. All you had to do was watch the 40 minute press conference from Friday to get any of this right
