In this video, Kaz outlines 5 problems with the M240i and the B58 engine. Other than the obvious coolant leaks, there are a few rare problems that exist that not many people talk about. You make a very good point by calling out the B58 for coolant leaks. At my job we are seeing more and more of the 1st gen B58s come in for coolant leaks. Not only with the expansion tank/ cap issue you pointed out, but also at the mechanical water pump AND the oil filter housing (via the heat exchanger there). So keeping an eye on the coolant level is key to preventing the engine from running catastrophically low on coolant.

Water pump is totaly fine. Filter has been redesign around 3 times and it's fine. Straight facts ;)

I have a first gen 340i and just fixed the oil filter housing leak. I’ve also experienced coolant loss numerous times.

You need to change the coolant every year or 2 years depending on mileage. I’ve done so and no issues. Same with oil. I change every 6000 km regardless of type of driving. Break fluid every two years. Now going to change transmission fluid at 80k km just to be safe.

Really interesting and honest video, mate. It certainly sounds software or electrics related. Perhaps you should try changing a couple of software things first, like putting on MHD and XHP just to see what happens. If instead you have a hardware problem (e.g. glitchy throttle position sensor or something like that) you might be able to catch that somehow with MHD or bootmod logging.

Owning my 2017 M240i since new, the only one of the issues presented my car’s had was low coolant. Unfortunately, this occurred after about 5 years of ownership at 150 miles into a 2000 mile round-trip. But fortunately, it was easily rectified by pulling off the road at the next exit, getting a motel room for the night, and topping off the coolant in the morning. An issue my car does exhibits that wasn’t presented is the spotty CarPlay connection. Usually it works, but occasionally requires disconnecting and reconnecting CarPlay. All that being said, my car has the six-speed manual, so it wouldn’t be effected with any ZF tranny issues. The manual’s been great!

Thanks Justin, appreciate the feedback. I fixed my slow coolant leak issue by buying an £18 new coolant reservoir cap directly from BMW. I believe that the seals on them go and vapour slowly leaks from that cap. Since doing that I haven’t seen the coolant level drop at all and it’s been about 3/4 months. Regarding your spotty CarPlay system, I highly recommend that you update your idrive as I had the same issue which has never occurred again since updating my idrive with the latest update. Again this is something that is done directly from BMW by supplying you VIN number. All you need is a USB. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNWHpNSCq7HLeIk.html

@@thepetroholics When my coolant was flushed and refilled at the dealer, I also paid for the iDrive update. Not only did that not fix the CarPlay issue, it actually broke my voice control over the GPS... Oh well, maybe my next career is in fixing car electronics; they're getting so complicated, maybe my degree in software engineering/computer science would be beneficial :o)

I have a lci 2018 m240i and somehow have none of the issues. Apparently it’s like a lottery ticket with all these hidden defects. I think it’s the case with every single modern car given how complicated they are.

Stability Control light on for stability control on my 2020 M340i ( no ABS light on) after I jump started my dead battery. Since then oil level reader has been highlighted in grey meaning you can’t click on “ Start Measurement.” The code I pulled for the stability light was Steering angle sensor calibration and I haven’t found a video for G series. Old gen videos don’t work. Other than that no drivetrain issues.

I have a September 2017 M240i and have none of the issues your having. Just add petrol and washer fluid and that's it. Has been absolutely bulletproof. The only thing that bugged me was the slight hesitation at times you are referring to. Installed a wavetrac differential and coded out the e-diff and custom remap and from there onwards no issues whatsoever

Just a characteristic of the car unfortunately. I believe it can be fixed through ECU tuning but I’m unsure on who is the best person/company to go to

Very good video i have one problem with my 240i well the b58 and it's the coolant leak, The b58 is a super good engine so far. And to be honest hardly an engine fault. I don't really have the other problems. i was wondering if you have stage 1or 2 because mine has been fine got it around 30000 and its at 75000 now all good here its fully factory tho.

Thanks for sharing your experience Naseebo. This car has a stage 1 tune and the coolant leak issue is a simply £18 fix by simply replacing the main reservoir cap from BMW.

I have a 2021 F22 M240i from new, had it almost 2 years now and done around 17,000 miles. Honestly can't say I've experienced any of these but I probably suspect BMW for the last remaining F22 cars produced may have tweaked some of the cars software etc to get rid of these issues? I might be wrong but my cars has been absolutely fine mate

For the creep mode thing I feel like that’s just a matter of letting the car warm up and rpm’s lowering… wouldn’t the acceleration be caused by the quick jump in rpm’s when started

I think you’re right Justin. It’s ultimately a limitation of having an auto which you don’t have 100% control over. But the question is can BMW not have tweaked the mapping to account for a cold start creep?

@@thepetroholics I'm not really understanding what's happening here, you're not saying it happens in Neutral right? Only after selecting drive I assume. I had an m135i with the ZF auto and don't recall this ever being an issue but then I tend to let my cars run and warm up a little before starting to drive. The reason I'm watching this is because I'm picking up an M240i Auto next week. I do remember a few occasions in the M135i where the I-drive just randomly rebooted itself while driving- it never completely failed but was always a worry that something was going bad!

Aaaa the old idrive problem. Have to get a new unit. Very rarely it can be reset but eventually it will go into bootloop.

So recently I’ve updated the idrive and so far no issues! Also, I’ve noticed the car connects to my phone quicker and more reliably when I use Apple CarPlay. But you’re right, from research it looks like I will need to replace the HU if those doesn’t work!

You like? You’ll never get this lala. They are CS Style Alloys that typically come with BMW M2s and M4s. I’m 99% sure my ones are just £600 replicas from eBay which was done by previous owner.

Hello. 1 : Cap is the fix as you said. 2: Creep mode is the normal and every car does. It isn't a double clutch gearbox. 3: Gearbox ; bug, it happen 4 : Idrive : same, bug 5 : Throttle lag : Guess it's just the Zf which is jerky when cold, that's all. So except the cap, none of them isn't a issue at all actually.

Fair enough. As I said these aren’t REAL big problems but they genuinely add up and the annoying thing is just the fact that they were so close to creating perfection!

5 - almost certainly the ZF. My manual doesn't have this issue at all.

if you change the battery and dont sync it w/new specs in computer - most of those issue will happen- if you register the battery the issues you mention most likely wont happen- wondering did you change battery?

Hey all! I have 2020 LCI M240i The only problem I experienced was the coolant warning. I live in Ecuador so is like desert warm here. BMW told me that in the production some cars where filled incorrectly and the system was full of air bubbles. I have this problem twice, every 2,000km the notification pops up. BMW has an excellent service here, they contacted me directly from the factory and share the process to fix that. Basically they suck the air some how and then refilled the car. Problem solved.

My biggest problem with the car is the automatic gearbox which is a bit laggy in 1st and 2nd gear, the missing dead angle mirror on the passenger side, the very bright LED headlights that seem to annoy a few people, the suspension that is a bit woolly, the Harman Kardon that doesn't have a Mid control, only bass and treble, the wheel bolts that are very poor quality (compared to the Audi I had) and the quite small tank (260 miles max.). The good things are the sound, the seating position, the engine, the 4 seats, the looks.

I have no problem with self switching to N, it never happened. M140ix 2017. Also I have never seen iDrive off, it switches on always without problems.

These cars are really fast, and exceptional to drive! Most people all say these are reliable, and anything with the B58 powertrain is ! Ranked 2 in consumer reports again this year out of all brands.

I own a 2021 M240i, and once again BMW wouldn't admit that my car door won't shut occasionally in the winter, because the window freezes in place! Only way to get door to close is to let the car thaw out with the heat cranking for a while! Now that's some serious bullshit, and it's a known problem they'll do nothing about!

@@thepetroholics It gets super cold at times I live in Maine in the US. It happens with icing on the glass from being parked outside! I'm surprised you've never had this happen if you deal with outside parking in cold winter weather.

BMW does the maintenance free for 3 years, so hopefully they would tell me if it's been getting low lol! Doubt they would, because I find them to be shady to deal with, and untrustworthy!

The throttle lag isn’t BMW engineers fault, modern cars have this lag to conserve gas. It doesn’t happen in sports mode.

Maybe, I’m not too sure. If you are referring to eco mode specifically, I’m aware. But to the best of my knowledge, comfort and sport mode both feel the same when applying light throttle from stand still

@@thepetroholics I can confirm for a fact that I have this issue in sport/sport plus and comfort. A friend of mine with a 2017 has the exact same issue. The throttle lag almost feels like you’re rolling off the line in 3rd gear.

Yes and the funny thing is that it's praised in Europe. Whatever mode you're in, you can't do a burnout or whatever. 1st and 2nd gear are absolutely shit.

Tell me you know nothing about cars with out saying you know nothing about cars “5 problems with240i” I can explain every issue he has if you turn on you car and put it into drive without waiting at least 20seconds you car is cold how do you warm up a car??? It revs slightly higher which means when gears are engaged the car will pull forward faster than if it was ideling at its correct rpm which is around 650. Your car going into neutral has nothing to do with a worn transmission you don’t have to brake to put the car in neutral you’d probably just knocking it.

The issues discussed are more ‘pronounced’ when cold but still exist when the engine is warm. Apologies on our behalf if we didn’t make that super clear. We were not knocking the car into neutral, I can assure you we know how to control our limbs :)

It’s a WELL known bug that these cars auto shift to neutral every once in a while. It’s defect relating to the routing of the wire harness and other components. You think thousands of people are just bumping it without feeling anything touch their arm. It’s happened to me a couple times but I drive with my right hand on the wheel so idk what kinda dumbass rationale you’d have for that😂

@@larryboy6577so evidently you know so much that you wrote something that makes no sense the gear selector is not manually selected it’s electronic. It works off “CAN” which is a communication component not manually so the “routing” or the wiring isn’t the issue

Some issues are relating to the M240i such as the creep mode and some relating to B58s such as the coolant leaks. I love my car, there is nothing like it for the price. Keep in mind the title of this video as it’s been created to outline ‘5 Problems’ that I have experienced. This is not a video on 5 things I love, but we will surely be making that video in the future!
