Welcome to the club! I started in vintage in 2021 and have been loving it. There are many economical ways to go and you can still have a awesome collection. If you want your money go far in post-war, all you have to do is avoid rookies. There are many value options in pre-war cards if you can find the beauty in some of the less popular sets. Have fun!

I've gone down some rabbit holes of the less popular sets recently. Some really cool cards in them that aged well. Thanks for the advice

The main reason I focus of pre 80s cards is simple to me.. After that era, folks saw and kept cards in good shape as they saw them as valuable objects.. If you have a nice card from the 70s back it's a very rare item. The bottom line is for me those old cards are tough.. You will never regret owning something everyone else probably doesnt.

Any vintage cards are great except the 2020s heritage. I don't know what Topps was thinking when they came out with these cards!

I just got back into the hobby last year and I have been documenting my journey. I started collecting again and I truly prefer vintage over anything new. In fact, I just finished collecting my vintage, nothing special, no graded cards, simply putting them in albums. My favorite set is the 1952 Topps. I started with nothing (no cards whatsoever) last January and now today I have over 500 cards from the 1950s (1951 Topps to 1959 Topps) as well as hundreds of 1948 Bowman to 1955 Bowman. I started collecting in 1987 during the Junk Wax era. My next project is collecting hand signed cards from the players from the junk wax era (includes rookies, rookie sensations, semi stars, All-stars, future HOFers as well as the HOFers of that era) Just finished and now I have over 360 autographs on cards on junk wax era cards that I collected. I did go on a Mickey Mantle buying spree as well. Collected multiples of him and they were considered authentic to poor. Doesn't matter to me since they were for my PC collection. I just love the look and for me it is the thrill of the hunt, not for the investment. My kids will probably get rid of it all anyway when I am long gone.

I started out wanting to get three cards from every year from Topps from 1950 until 2023 and it morphed into get 60 to 70 of each year of the 1950s and 1960s. I wasn't a fan of the 1970s, 80s and 90s even though I grew up starting with the 1987 Topps cards. Nothing beats vintage. Even in the 80s and 90s, I was always drawn to the 50s cards. I had a few. My soon to be ex wife threw my whole baseball card collection away in 2017 including the old ones. All of it ended up in some random dumpster in another city. I lost everything, autos, signed baseballs, and even complete sets. So, when I moved out last year, I went out and bought all of the original 50s cards that I had as a kid and it went from there.@@AfterHoursCollector

New subscriber!! Enjoy your channel!! Thanks for sharing your five reasons on the importance of vintage vs modern day cards!! Vintage cards have history, will hold or increase in value and will always be collectible. The new shiny cards are like playing the lottery and paying ridiculous prices for with 99% of them ending up in the bargain box.

Nice video. Enjoyed hearing your perspective on the importance of the history of baseball and the cards representing that history. The grading has really opened up options for all levels of collectors. I buy all ungraded cards, and then grade a percentage of the cards I deem necessary or fun to slab up. Just subscribed. Looking forward to more. Well done. Take care, Rob.

Thanks Rob, really appreciate the feedback. That's certainly a great way to go about things, you must have a real keene eye. Plus, imo it's more fun to buy them raw and grade what you decide to yourself.

Really enjoyed the video--first time viewer and new sub : ) Enjoy your calm delivery and well-reasoned points. I vastly prefer vintage, but I can't resist the fun of ripping new product when it looks interesting. And for me, I've always believed in having a diverse collection (or maybe I'm just incurably unfocused!). Congrats on your move--it looks as though you're in a padded room : )

Those all seem like great ideas and well reasoned ones for collecting vintage. I'm rather eclectic and have been collecting all over the place between vintage and modern, but vintage is still my favorite. I find myself opening fewer and fewer boxes and prefer hunting for cards at antique malls because it's more fun. Hope you do more videos on your vintage finds.

The beauty of vintage cards is it’s all about eye appeal. The high grade vintage is so expensive, I almost classify that as a different hobby. But the low-medium grade vintage has some really great cards out there if you’re patient. I recently bought a 1968 Topps Johnny Bench rookie PSA 2 for around $150. I feel it’s really undergraded as it’s centered too. Thats the key is to look for undergraded vintage cards to maximize your budget. I’ll be honest, the grade is really irrelevant to me as I will put my PSA 2 Bench up against and PSA 6 or 7.
@AfterHoursCollector
@AfterHoursCollector 5 ай бұрын
Crazy isn’t it? That’s a veeery good point about high grade being its own thing. I agree though also another great thing. A PSA 2 can look almost as nice as a much higher card.

I PC both, vintage and some modern players (to have some skin in the game) but the thing that keeps vintage in baseball so "alive and investable" is that baseball is a VERY stat driven sport. And when a player looks at certain milestone to reach to become relevant for a long time then look at the guys who have done it before....500 HR club, 3k hit club are 2 examples. And the players that have reached those milestones (or passed them) are the Mays, Aaron, Mantle, Ruth, etc...making those players always relevant in the hobby even today.
@AfterHoursCollector

So very true and us baseball fans really do love our stats. It’s nice to collect some modern players but have a real focus in vintage. Nice thankfully many modern players are pretty inexpensive

We are living in the 2nd junk wax era, and people will figure it out soon enough. Only cards from the last 20 years worth collection in my opinion are Pujols, Ichiro, Miggy, Trout, Harper, Kershaw

I think we are in another junk wax era. They are printing way too many cards and autos. It’s nice to grow as a collector and it seems the more you grow the further back you go and start to value those who are the greatest of all time.

When everything is premium, nothing is… modern cards are gonna fall apart longterm. What’s more rare: a card that has a 1/1, 1/5, 1/10, 1/15, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200, 1/500, and base variant (all of which went from pack to PSA immediately) or a card that was literally just seen as a gimmick to sell gum 70 years ago, that no one thought would make them rich, that still managed a PSA 10 decades later when PSA came about?

The reason to collect vintage over modern to ultra modern is that vintage cards are tried and true. There is very little risk of losing money if you plan to hold long-term. I'm getting rid of my ultra modern for more vintage the only modern cards I'm keeping are my mid 1990's baseball and basketball inserts and key rookie cards. This ultra modern isn't going to hold any future value when vintage cards have one Maybe 2-3 rookie cards vs all these junk parallel rookie cards are numbering in the thousands for key players rookie cards. They have flooded the Market just like the junk wax with these rookie cards today. These manufacturers today do not care about the collectors they care about profit. 1979 and older are the 1000% way to collect even some 1980-1985 cards are ok anything after 1986 is shit

Sorry, I just don't get the fascination spending thousands on players I've never seen play. And it seems like many covid era investors are moving into vintage for the next big grift. I prefer focusing on 80/90s cards. I can at least relate with that era. Complete sets from the 80s are still fun and affordable while the 90s have innovative inserts.
