Where you live they are effective. I like where you put yours because of the safety element. You’re house can easily be broken into if you have them in the wrong place. High humidity in a house can be much worse than low humidity. I mean excessive humidity. Another cool product is called a whole house fan. A company called AirScape makes them. They are a great way to change the air in your house and attic. It’s a brilliant and old style of “free cooling”. AirScape uses ECM motors to move the air. Look them up. It does require the outside temp to drop at night for them to work well. Again dependent on your location just like the evaporative cooler. Great topic Vegas! I have been in the HVAC trade for 26 years and I am 45. I love all kinds of heating and cooling tech. I also love 2Ts and even 4Ts😜

I live just down the road in Kingman AZ. We have had over a week of 100 degree wether. (July/Aug. 2020) I have used a Mastercool type evaporative cooler on my house for over 40 years and it works just fine except during Monsoon season when the humidity is high. Years ago I took it off the roof and ducted it into the central line so I could service it while standing on the ground. I also have ceiling fans in every room which help immensely in blowing the cool air downward. Evap coolers typically reduce the outside air by 20 degrees. There is a new 2-stage cooler which, I am told is even better. They are not perfect but are economical and easy to service yourself. Just keep it cleaned and oiled and you are good to go. And yes, the humid air is much better for my breathing.

Hi from Perth, Western Australia. We use a ducted evaporative ac, Breezair, with 5 ducts throughout the house. Very common here. Only a few days a year when it's too humid to use with water so we have it on fan only, works fine. BTW we run ours for about 4 months straight during summer 😊

So I had to figure out how a evaporated cooler worked on my own. I inherited my mother’s house . And it’s 70;miles outside of Vegas. On the way to Death Valley. The best thing someone told me. Was to direct the cool air. Open the window where you want the cool air to go.. And I have an air conditioning unit. But it cost double the swamp cooler as far as power. So the swamp cooler is the only way to go in my opinion. Once you learn how they work. I never use the A/C ..

I'm testing an 20 years old sonic humidifier directly under my desk to cool me down with no air conditioning nor fan, the fine haze gets my legs cold and helps me through the day. If I plug a fan gets definitely colder but the wind hurt my eyes in the computer. It creates a very thin haze close to the ground in hot days, almost like dry ice. My dog seems to like it. Although I used it to the minimum or the house gets real foggy and it I feel like drawing lol.

Yeah your bill is so high because it's Las Vegas. Swamp coolers won't work as well in the Southeast where it's hot but also humid, since "swamp coolers" work by evaporative cooling and highly saturated or fully saturated air doesn't allow that to work as effectively. In the Southeast a compressor AC unit, which dehumidifies the air, is actually ideal. So just keep in mind what your local environment is like because that will determine which is better

Many people in certain parts of the United States use Evaporative Coolers as a portable option of cooling a small space and because of the natural process heat doesn't have to be vented out. These coolers don't work in humid regions of the country. So I've always wondered why they can't use refrigerator/freezer technology to create small portable air conditioners to cool small spaces. If you stick your hand in a freezer the air blowing out is colder than air coming out of a window AC, yet the refrigerator either vents little to no heat that you can feel. This doesn’t make sense because we are told you can't have a refrigerant based air conditioner without venting out the hot air yet refrigerators contradict that. Even if a small AC using the refrigerator method doesn't produce enough cold air to cool an entire house or large room they would make effective small room coolers similar to Evaporative coolers but a little colder. Such a portable space cooler would sell off the shelves especially in the Southeast United States where swamp coolers don't work. I'm surprised no one is doing this.

You could use a dehumidifier in humid conditions to balance the humidity, some are very cheap to run. A evaporated cooler doesn't take much power to run so this would work great together and not have a high power bill running both win win for everyone.

I live Alberta that is subject to hot dry summers so evaporation or swamp coolers would be effective. I would never use swamp coolers in Ontario where they experience very hot, humid summers. In their case, change in state AC plus humidification is critical but expensive. Swamp cooling is less efficient in hot humid climates. Too much humidity is just as bad if not worse than too little. The other problem with excess humidity is it's able to hold onto a lot of other air pollutants. I myself am uncomfortable with humidity and prefer slightly dry, crispy mountain air, instead of humid low country air. If you still think AC is too expensive then your house building envelope is clearly not built properly with the right quality of sealing, and insulation system. You can also have your AC programmed like a furnace in cold climates so it's only operating when you need it. My AC bill for the summer is less than $60/month for a 45,000 BTU split and that's with $0.08/kw electricity meter rates. I pay a more for power transmission service charges than total kw of electricity used in a month.
