Just days after Klopp announced his shocking decision to step down at Liverpool, now Xavi has done the same at Barcelona. Announcing it after a heavy 5-3 home loss to Villarreal, the Spaniard expressed that the job was taking a lot out of him and that the club and players may benefit from a new dynamic at the club.
Despite winning the league title in his first season in charge, Barca now sit third in the table, ten points behind leaders Real Madrid. They are also already out of the Copa Del Rey and lost the Supercopa De Espana final to their classico rivals. The season is looking bleak and it's only January. Therefore it might not be so surprising to see Xavi step away. Here are five reasons we think he flopped as Barcelona coach.

He won a La Liga title in his first full season at the club. I'd hardly call anyone who does that a flop when he's basically fighting against the incompetence of his club every waking moment. He deserves far better than what he's got.

You are right. All to blame at Bartomeu who spend Neymar'222 million on Coutinho and Griezmann. You know they are great players, but they are great while used as a pivotal role in the systems. The 2017-18 season's Coutinho was great as a 10 and the important man in Klopp's system. But at Barça the team was being built around Leo Messi. Same applies to Anto Griezmann who also functioned as a false 9/no.10 in Simeone's system. And don't forget buying Dembele who moved to Borrusia Dortmund One year prior before coming to Barca . He hadn't performed at the top level for long as he played at Stade Rennais. Laporta also has the thing to be blamed like Selling Franck Kessie who was a great acquisition from AC Milan. Selling of Auba who redeemed himself 6 months within his downfall at Arsenal . And and and we cant solely put the blame on Xavi because I think he is an excellent coach who got Barcelona 21-22 all the way from 10th to 2nd while beating Real Madrid 4-0 at their own ground. The man is human with flesh and blood like us and can't do godly things without better players

Xavi's never been in a position to rebuild the squad. The players he has don't fit within how you expect he would want his teams to play. That's down to the club's $$ problems - something Xavi's not responsible for. Honestly, Barca's governance board are the real flop. They've let Xavi down - just like how they let managers before him down. Hard to see any top manager wanting the Barca job right now.

Only managed 2.5 seasons Took team from 9th to 2nd position in first season Won league and super Cup in the second season Struggles in the last season where he lost integral part(busi, dembele, gavi's injury, ter stegen's injury)of team without proper reinforcement and Less than 5M spend in the market. Do that to any top manager and you will see them struggling. You may hate him but He is not bad as you think. I am not saying he is in the level of Pep or others. But definitely he doesn't got the resources others got

I'm not a Barca fan in any way. Regardless, I think it's very insensitive to qualify him as a flop. You go down memory lane and realize that the club was a mess before he came - on and off the pitch. You tell me when last the club won the league before last season. Please, stop using words like "flop" to qualify him. It's insulting, wrong, and unfair based on his achievements there.

Calling him a flop is absolutely disgraceful The legend came in one of the worst phases in Barca's history - crippled finances , no Messi , ageing squad and so many below par players on high wages He won the La Liga and Supercopa last season and even though many things aren't going right this season , you gotta see that it's a culmination of numerous factors - the experienceed players just don't turn up on the big occasions , we have to rely on kids who are 16,17 or 18 year olds . The Barcelona medical team is absolutely trash as well . Xavi's favouritism towards certain players is also a bad thing for the club not gonna lie Those fake barca fans are now saying * thanks for the memories * but when they needed to support him , they were abusing and shouting at him to go out . And blaming Laporta will be very bad as well....he kept on supporting Xavi no matter what and never wanted to sack him I agree that Xavi may not reach the levels of Pep or Klopp as well but portraying him as a flop is disgusting

Putting blame on Lewandowski is not fair. It's the whole team and how they play. I put majority of the blame on Xavi's inability to make these players work like last season due to lack of utility players like Sergio Busquets. The defensive side has been tinker with too much. The biggest offence is how they transition from defense to attack... THEY LITERALLY SLOW DOWN to a point where Lewandowski is crowded by like 3 people. He tries to make runs, and not just Lewandowski but half the team but each time they transition they literally just stop and don't know where to go. I think that's why Lewandowski's scoring potential has dropped massively. I will also not deny that he's getting older and that contributes but such a massive drop definitely is all too strange.

I think it has to do with our wingers. Earlier this season, Xavi switched to 4-4-2 which doesn't compliment Lewandowski's pure 9 nature. And he given new tasks to the team to play more in depth (especially the midfield), which requires the two attackers on the front (either Lewandowski-Felix or Lewandowski-Raphinha) to have more pressure and playmaking. It shows how good Felix was being a second striker (in his Benfica days he used to play similar position) but hard for Lewandowski's pure 9 nature. And Busi's pivotal duet with Frenkie was definitely missed this season, hard to find his replacement especially when Xavi nowadays choose Romeu or Christensen as a CDM. Edit: I just realized your comment was posted 3 weeks ago. And Xavi has gone back to 4-3-3 formation which makes Lewandowski had scored four matches in a row 😂

I’m a Barca fan and l must say, horrible signings, no persistence regarding the new talents ( Fati etc ), low wages, no money in the club etc. There’s no hope for Barca and there isn’t any coach and this planet that could fix all the problems. La Masia doesn’t produce any quality players and most of all, the players in this squad do NOT PLAY WITH THEIR HEARTS for this club like Puyol, Pique, Iniesta, Messi, Xavi, Bojan etc. On top of that, their talent scouts are probably the worst in Europe with a horrible president Laporta. Barca is slowly fading away and will probably be even worse next season.

Oshimen for 50 million, man Lewandowski scored more than oshimen last season and tbh he was the reason Barcelona won 2 trophies last season but he's one of the primary reasons they're not good enough this season but it's not only him and we'll know it , from ter stegan's injury to Lewandowski not really receiving proper chances and his instincts have gotten worse than ever still he has not been as bad as the Barcelona defense which is probably the biggest reason why xavi was on the hot pan and eventually he wanted to jump off of it and really wanted to turn the stove off but the CL is still around and he jus can't lose hope like everything is lost because Napoli is obviously having a much more shitter season than Barcelona.

It's incredible what KZfaqrs will do just for some views a flop really?? When was the last time Barca won anything before Xavi took over, how quickly people have forgotten the 4 goal thrashing of Real Madrid and Atletico in his first season winning the super cup too with another brilliant display. He later led the dead team to win The League Title heck they even celebrated like they've won the Champions League that's how low and desperate the once Mighty Barcelona were. Lewandowski and his rebellious gang are the ones responsible for what's happening and it's the the same thing happening at Manchester United, player power winning. its hard for most of our Barca fan to see it this way, its like being ungrateful but most people are these days in relationships let alone with their loved club 100% agree on Lewe ,..we should have never got him, Abu was the best we let him go for free and got that alonso guy waste of a great striker much better than Lewe... Lewe cost us the UCL last year all by himself against his older team bayern.. then ref cost us the game against Inter milan. you can add Kounde to that list and also Raphena but it was not his call.. Deco brought Rapha then he brought Cancelo who should be a winger than a left or right back... plus with players like him you would need someone like Raketic who would cover for Alves and again unlucky with Gavi's injury, Busquets departure ... lastly Gundegon and Frankie they are defending well and attack wise they are good but we probably compare them to Pedri, Xavi and Iniesta and thats where the comparison fails

That is a reason but main thing is the attack and defence are out of form, MATS and gavi injured is also a blow. But as a coach u have to motivate ur players and overcome this. His tactics, player selections , subs etc are all lacking this season.

Xavi never flopped at Barcelona. He was a victim of the circumstances of Barcelona being in a financial woe from the previous regime. Laporta didn't help Xavi to navigate the difficult waters that Barcelona are in. Blame Bartomeu for ruining Barcelona financially and blame Laporta for not helping Xavi through this crisis.

You forgot to mention Frenkie de Jong perhaps the most overrated player in the world! Look at his statistics and data and you see a result unworthy of a top club! But Xavi is also among those who give Frenkie far too much credit for what he really contributes. Frenkie is a hyped player and that has already started in his native country where they have shamelessly even dared to compare him with the Dutch all-time great footballer Johan Cruyff. Frenkie is an excellent midfielder but absolutely not a driving and decisive player, but he does fulfill that role at Barcelona and that goes wrong :-)
