@jackielinde7568

Well, they're not that hard to build. You need a dome, PVC (or some insulating plastic) tube, a motor, a metal dome, some copper wire, a rubber belt, metal brushes (like from a car's starter), and some plans that walk you through making it safely. Basically, the tube isolates the metal dome from the grounding structures. The motor spins a wheel at the bottom of the contraption to move the rubber belt. The belt moves past the metal brushes touching it, causing the belt to pull electrons from the brush. This causes the brush to pull electrons from the wire, which causes the wire to pull electrons from the dome, and the dome becomes positively charged. Give you an idea how easy they are to make, they were being made and used in parlor shows (shows in someone's home) back in the late 1800's. So, when you make yours, have fun and don't cut any corners.

I can tell Diana is a lot of fun at Halloween :) In a high school Science class, we experimented with a Van de Graaff generator. One experiment involved volunteers standing on a 12" high insulated platform and placing their hands on top of the generator. We weren't shocked because we weren't grounded, but our hair was slowly levitated just like the dolls hair. One guy got his picture in our year book with his hair standing on end like that.

Funny thing. I was once on a camping trip with a very large group. Having nowhere to sleep after all the spaces were taken, I slept in the back of a van. Also in the van were two coolers with dry ice to freeze the meats, etc. I didn't anticipate the evaporation (sublimation?) of the ice. The CO2 filled the van over time and I woke up gasping for breath. So, cool safety tip, don't fall asleep in a van with dry ice.

I’m in my seventies and a retired physics teacher. I often wonder what I might have done if my introduction to Physics hadn’t included a Van der Graf. That first physics lesson captured my attention like no other class I’d been in. So much so that all the teachers in the schools I taught in knew that the VdG was booked by me for the first year-9 class of the year .
