The frictional forces between the sharpie creayes enough heat to soften the metal and facilitate the bending of the metal causing the fatigue.

Isn't it just as easy to hit the tab with the sharpie to pop the aluminum in. I've done it many times with a quick tap. But thank you for another way to open a soda can.

Metal fatigue concept reminds me of a passenger airplane crash that happened in the late 20th century; reason was that the metal was weak and eventually stripped apart in mid air. Can't remember the flight number and year of the crash. There were two similar events.
