This video is based on the principles of multimedia learning from the book "The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning," edited by Richard Mayer.
Here are the principles I found inspiring and that I share in the video:
00:00 Intro
01:20 The Pre-training Principle
02:20 The Redundancy Principle
04:20 The Signaling Principle
05:29 The Segmenting Principle
07:40 The Self-explanation Principle

For me, the most important thing is not to stop. I'm a language teacher, and very often students are very enthusiastic at the beginning of the learning process. However, after a while their motivation goes down, as they face more complex grammar and vocab, and as a result, they start taking lessons more and more seldom. For me, the key is consistency, it's important to learn just a bit of something every day, be it a new word, a grammar explanation, or an expression. This way you'll advance much faster :)

I am also a language teacher and I think the problem is that the classes are overcrowded, the kids can't really talk in class for more than a minute, they don't have enough classes per week to truly see progress in a few months or even a year and last, they just don't put in the work at home ...

the redundancy principle makes SO much sense and i’m so glad to know that i’m not crazy for not being able to focus when trying to listen to a show/podcast while reading the transcript or subtitles!! it all make sense now

Great video!! ✨🌈 A thing about the redundancy principle: while it might be true for most, having both audio and subtitles is very helpful for people with sensory processing disorder. It's very common in various conditions, such as autism, anxiety, ADHD.. so if you need both audio and subtitles, there's nothing wrong with that! 💗

Excellent advice as usual. I think the key takeaway for new language users is to avoid reading long texts or watching movies with the hope that words or grammar will somehow "stick." Begin with the main concepts (e.g., vocabulary, simple verb conjugation) before learning anything complex. Ultimately, minimize cognitive load.

Hi Zoe. Well, I think learning English or any another foreign language via news article or documentary is an effective way to improve our vocabulary and grammar structures in the best way so multimedia pave the way and it acts as a simplifying factor to enhance our motivation when it comes to language acquisition so to speak. 😁😁😁❤

I have been learning languages and watching language learning videos for like 3 years and you are the first KZfaqr who combine language learning with science and I love it sooo much. I listened to sooo many podcast and note everything down I am learning but with your videos I learned so much like with all the other 500 videos/podcasts episodes I have consumed so far. Long story short, keep up this work, I immediately subscribed to you and looking forward to new content 😊🎉

Thank you for a new video so soon! ❤️ Personally, writing in colours the main ideas, like a small summary, helps me memorise better. Even my colleagues love the way I put the information in coloured chunks. Zoe, I hope you will consider to male a video on public speaking skills since you are a lecturer, KZfaqr and conferencer. Also, please show us more from your daily vlogs or study routines. All the best!

Very clear and interesting overview of more recent evolutions in language learning. For some reason subtitles were activated, but when you explained why it was not a good idea I switched them off and I got it immediatly 😊. I do love to learn new languages, to be able to read texts and discover different cultures, but a big issue for me is to speak. I think it's due to the fact that in my country the education is not sufficiently based on oral communication.

i’ve found multi-media learning the best! i’ve used some more traditional learning websites that encourage you to listen to the lessons then refer to the transcript afterwards, minimising the risk of being overwhelmed. but a variety of resources is the best option. i found youtube videos on topics you’re interested in are great as you’re already engaged in the content and will be more likely to use the vocabulary you learn as it’s a pre-established interest. also a variety of reading material is great! i’ve benefitted from reading formal news articles, more casual blogs, novels at different reading ages, and comics (comics are good as chapters can be shorter and easier to digest than a novel)

Ah, the redundancy principle. I like to listen while reading, and that works wonderfully for me… when what I’m reading is just words, like a book or article. The redundancy principle seems to suggest that when you add a third variable (like animation, video, or even pictures or charts), this is where concentration becomes fragmented. This is what I had been experiencing, and I couldn’t understand why reading and listening together works so well when I’m reading a book, but not watching a movie. Now I know! Thank you!

Selamlar

The most effective method for me is to keep happy, be interested in, to have a lot of fun by learning and eager to discover new things each time. so i use a mix of you tube video, on line course via preply with a very good teacher because intereactive, learning alone by reading and especially writing , and also discussing with native speakers. I am improving slowly my mandarin. And of course it is important to be attracted by the culture of the country. it is a very long process to learn a foreign language so it is a longterm journey.

@gabrielbarbosa4091
@gabrielbarbosa4091 7 ай бұрын
It depends on a variety of factors: time spent learning, whats your mother tongue, which material are you consuming etc. besides that the most important is what you defines by learn because the process is continuous and has no ending - sometimes it just means that you can’t say with certain where tou begin to get the language. Your question has no objective answer, but do it anyway.

Do not confuse Anglo-Saxon with English. I generally use English to . Okey, so Anglo-Saxon does sound like English at-all! I read the King James Version Bible. To be honest it sounds like Satan had or has a message in it where he was planning ahead, to his brothers and sisters IN hell AND heaven alike. I shall beeth honesteth as difficulteth as may seemeth as shall becometh for me by seamlesseth. Becareful when you read the book you will see what a hidden language as so. ALL THE ITALICS IN THE BOOK ARE ABOUT SATAN BEING DRUNK or in a normal book it would mean its out of the context “for the reader”. I warned you it’s a difficult. Sorry goodbye…
