Really good advice. I always tell friends and associates to do some studying of the culture of the country you're traveling to before you get there. What you may think is ok to you here in the U.S. may not be ok in another country.

Learn to bargain. Everything is negotiable in SEA

I don't mind bargaining, I do it sometimes, but to save a couple pesos or a dollar NO. When I'm in the Phil I'll consider that as a tip, no bargain.

Mindanao local here! I'm from Cagayan de Oro, way north from Malaybalay. Can confirm that there's definitely a flavor of individualism present in more developed cities like CDO that's almost absent in more rural cities like Malaybalay. Exceptions like these are recommendable for foreigners who like to be a little bit more of themselves if they wanna kickstart coming here to the Philippines with their comfort zones intact. I've made friends with a lot of foreigners from the West, and have witnessed their culture shock. One other behavior I noticed is how they get super anxious driving in the Philippine roads. Definitely expect to drive far slower and far more cautious in these parts unless if they're in the highway. And even though Philippines is a car-centric country too, but most often it is the people (and stray animals) who like to own these public roads and make use of them for social spaces and the likes. Mental health care is also a rarity in SEA in general. People here are expected to neglect their emotions, especially men. Therefore, foreigners with special needs should think twice before coming here if they're not prepared. I once knew an American who had to retreat back to his state because of this crucial lack within his newfound Pinoy community. Even though he genuinely enjoyed living in Mindanao for some years, but at the end of his stay it left a sour taste to my local Pinoy friends who could only deal with him so much in terms of his psychological needs.

i scored 4/5, my only weakness is #2 because i have a bad temper, and i'm working on my anger management, the other 4 is easy for me to be humble, adjust, adapt, i love SE asia, and #5 about patience, we get long lines in southern california too, and i remember that 45 minute grocery line at general santos city mall, and it's not a big problem for me, i will work on #2 tho

Been living here in the Philippines my whole life and there were less occasions where I was impressed with the level of service provided by private organizations or government agencies. I still get pissed everytime. That never changed. But because it's not common for Filipinos have an outburst in public, I'll curse and shout in my mind, then be cool with it. :) Also, in my 44 years of existance, I probably just witnessed less than 10 fellow Filipinos acted like Karen or Dave in the Philippines.
