I have talked to 8 spray foam companies near me over the years. Really all of them are more about money than knowing the science of what they are doing. Spray foam is the best insulation but we have way too many issues with installers in the US. So most of the high end guys around me still use Rockwool and tape to ensure long life. If I had an installer that was well trained I would use it but we don't.

Your videos a fantastic. It is very easy to see that you are very knowledgeable and care about your end product. I am a commercial roofer and builder and I enjoy the information. I watched your video the other day about a “hot roof” and venting the attic. I have tried to tell folks that for years!! I tore apart and rebuilt a Geodasic some years ago. The customer built it himself. He lined the studs with heavy plastic, he sealed all sides of the exterior plywood with gallons of silicone and did the stud cavities as well. He had the roof so tight with no venting that it destroyed the plywood by year 3-4. It was crazy how wet and rotten it was. He should have definitely watched your videos!!

2:06 On old foam, I usually use the 2lb old stuff as a base layer of a multi inch roof. If the stink gets through the 3lb cap, no big deal. Rarely do that but as long as the total inches are up to contract, it works. Have roofs like this that are 15 years old and are still in perfect condition.

I live in KY, USA and had a new metal garage sprayed yesterday. I had open cell foam sprayed and I think I'm going to like it. There is no wood at all and the garage will only be used for motorcycles, ATV and lawnmowers. The only thing I don't like is the metal studs are five feet apart and the foam finish isn't smooth. The salesman brought this to my attention beforehand, so I can't complain. The intentions were to spray the thickness of the 4 inch studs, but they actually sprayed out to make the walls meet the front of my electrical outlets. This is likely about six inches. I was surprised that you told the customers to tape the studs and put plastic up. The company did everything for me, except take the pictures of what they were doing.

Great commentary on spray foam wrong doings. I think it’s just too much gray area to trust the installers here in FL to do it the right way. It’s a risk you can’t afford to take back if they mess up. Unfortunate that the US doesn’t have stricter standards. It’s something we have to breathe in for the life of the home. It’s gotta be done right.

Great video thanks for posting. Can you comment on duration of smell after installation? The first 3-7 days after having closed cell foam installed an incredible stench was off gassed from the foam but resolved after. Foam appears to have proper ratio, density, cell structure and installed within parameters and recommended lift height. I've never been around spray foam before and wondering if this was expected with usual installation. Thanks

I watched quite a few of your videos. Excellent presentations. I hired someone to spray part of my small house about 17 years ago (- they sprayed the ceiling and walls. (400 sq ft of living space) I had zero knowledge of potential problems and I never asked). The guy had been doing spray foam for many years and the job has had zero issues, but I have no idea what was sprayed on my walls other then the guy told me it will make that space structurally stronger as well. I am now going to spray my garage(under living space) and an adjacent inside hallway. I removed all of my fiberglass I could get to. My question - Is there a 'better' or 'best' brand spray foam? I am in northern Verrmont. Thank you.

I had a new house roof deck sprayed with UPC 500 open cell foam. 4 months later and with AC handler in the attic, the house smells like urethane and in the mornings more like a sour smell. So I put a piece of the foam in a zip bag and put it out in the sun. the same sour smell is observed in the bag. My conclusion is that the foam exposed to heat via the roof deck under the sun stars producing odors which then leak inside the house. This cycle seems to be constant even with the active ventilation in the attic, which defeats the purpose of the unvented attic to begin with. What a disaster. It was applied by a reputable company that has been in business for many years.
@SprayJones
@SprayJones 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Open cell foam has to be mixed before and during spraying. OC foam has a short shelf life Properly installed OC foam will NOT give off constant odors even in high temps. I have a video on VOC tests and results. I suggested getting more info to help prepare you for next steps you may have to take.
@SinnisjInsulator
@SinnisjInsulator 3 жыл бұрын
Oh ya the smell is only when you apply way too much in one pass and also that your foam is off ratio ( too much b side). so the inside of the foam may burn and it won't cure properly. Off ratio is also very dangerous when it's too much b side or the chemical with the rising agent. Thanks for the share for all these types of failures.
@SprayJones
@SprayJones 3 жыл бұрын
You are welcome. Spraying the foam too thick too quick and resulting in smell is a BS answer that has been floating around since 2014 CBC news article. It is quickly becoming urban legend.
@SinnisjInsulator
@SinnisjInsulator 3 жыл бұрын
@@SprayJones ah good to know, but it would not let the foam inside cure properly right, the cells will be overstretched. The smell would only come from off ratio issues right? So that cbc interview probably didn't mention specifically that there were probably off ratio areas as well. I mean those installers clearly didn't care.
@SprayJones
@SprayJones 3 жыл бұрын
@@SinnisjInsulator The CBC piece did not show ANY off ratio foam. For all purposes the foam "looked" fine but smelled. I am 90% sure why. Someone got caught putting catalyst into the SPF. Hence why the supplier was not held accountable ad the installer played dumb. Either way insurance will not cover you for fraud. Hence why they did not make a claim and have it removed. Then this BS about too thick started being said in the bars around town... blah blah. I called BS the second someone brought that up. Too thick foam will crack, smoke, do a lot of funky things, but smell like fish?? No never it doesn't smell like that in raw form in the drum... but Catalyst does in raw form!!!

Do you have a Web site or email. You could advise me on why the garage is very cold meaning not functional as an insulation. Thank you.

I used spray foam over my basement foundation walls. I remember hearing a popping sound come from that area after I finished. Could the spray foam have exploded and leaked liquid down onto the floor? The floor around there is all damp and sticky now. There is a foundation crack behind there that has never leaked in 50 year old home and that area outside is under the deck so I don’t think it’s leaking. I did try and fill the crack with a Sika epoxy resin and that stuff ran down onto the floor also. Thoughts?

This is great info, thanks for doing this video! I'm looking at hiring a company to spray my new shop, and I'm concerned about the health impact of the off gassing after seeing some horror stories of people getting really sick and having to go to extremes like removing their entire roof. I've tried to find a good, well priced (meaning I'm willing to pay more for quality) contractor that has excellent ratings, but that has failed me in the past. Is the off gassing issue fairly rare, especially for well-established and well rated contractors?

I am actually highly sensitive and usually correct, like identifying a propane leak before anyone else notices, which can be verified. It's not completely made up, some people have a better sense of smell, just like hearing and eyesight. There are just also people who imagine things. Technically they aren't more sensitive if the smell doesn't exist, because there is nothing to sense.

Another major problem can occur when closed cell resin isn't sufficiently flushed when changing over to open cell product. The classic industry term is "clopen cell". It consists of oversized cells and/or crispy chemistry, but not dark crispy like iso rich foam. Can cause smell/shrinkage issues. Another possible problem can occur from high lift closed cell (some brands advertise up to 8" lifts) application in cold environment. Can cause shrinkage (smell?) issues and can twist framing. And yet another problem can occur if applicators are using cheap torpedo heaters instead of expensive indirect fired job site heaters. The exhaust from burning fuel contains moisture which changes the dew point of your spray environment. Can cause shrinkage and smell issues. Most of these problems can be prevented by using an experienced foam applicator. Thanks for sharing your experience, Jones, very informative channel!

@@SprayJones sorry. I didn’t mean to imply that you yourself do a poor job. But as a consumer there is very little protection when there is a problem. You even said some people just believe they smell something when there isn’t anything there. That is the same excuse that a bad company would give when there actually is something terribly wrong... even when the smell was obvious. Not like you can argue smell in court. Causing a family to abandon their house and hire expensive outside sources to prove the problem then lawyers and courts to attempt to remedy it. While the family is left to live in a trailer on their driveway. When a customer complains that the odor is giving them a headache but you don’t smell anything how to you test it? Sure it’s a great product when installed correctly. But when it’s not the risk and expenses and sometimes critical health issues are all on the customer. It’s quite the gamble. As you stated removing it is extremely difficult especially by a company who poorly installed it and refuses to admit there’s a problem when it happens. So a consumer could end up with great insulation, or get so poisoned the wouldn’t have the energy to fight it out and have to abandon their house. Solve that issue, then we can talk. Again sorry if this is your industry, as a consumer there are better and safer methods without that risk.
