Will power raking tear up St Augustine? And any easy steps to kill off Dallis Grass?
@alonso68joe1
@alonso68joe1 Жыл бұрын
@@mannieyoung5477 I actually do this every year on my St. Augustine grass. I found out one thing, is better to get a bagger lawn mower. I have a regular lawn mower and the amount of thatch I pick up on a pass is absurd. I've picked up 10 bags worth of thatch. I usually do it early spring, but this year I did it about a week ago since I did it last fall, and didn't think I need it to dethatch, was I wrong. Grass was growing thick and healthy, then a couple of months later I started to notice light green spots and yellowish and brown spots on grass blades. It had a fungal infection caused by the insane amount of thatch. I spent close to 10 hours dethatching and cleaning up. The moral of the story is, make sure to have a bagger lawn mower to cut your grass. That way you don't have so much thatch to pick up!

I removed the thatch from our yard (using a metal rake only) in Houston because the grass just would not grow and it was getting over grown with weeds. I spend weeks digging out weeds and raking thatch. 13 trash bags later....all clear. Added fertilizer (Nitrophos) and the grass started growing like gangbusters! Weeds didn't stand a chance with new strong grass growing! Great video!

Hats off to you sir. That is some hard work. I’ve had two lower back surgeries. A couple years ago, I was healed up and feeling like a man again and went to Home Depot, bought a dethatching rake, used it for about 10 square feet and took it back haha. Nice job. Hard work, I know. I prefer to mow with a bag instead of raking. You're right, the mower bags are smaller these days it seems. So every couple of passes I just dump the debris in chosen spots in the yard and keep going. This way it's less tedious for me and when done, pick up and bag all the debris at one time. Any loose residual I lightly rake or use a blower. I guess it boils down to whatever method works best for the homeowner, not to mention age too. One thing's for sure, you'll shed some pounds in the process. Thanks for sharing. ~Mike

Ahh the power rake, wonderful invention. It's also great for getting rid of moss, which I spent doing for three weeks this spring for clients. Needless to say, two passes don't always get the job done! If only these things were self propelled! We found that using a blower, for larger lawns, can really help get out that deep stuff that the power rake has pulled up (front and back were each 20-30 40gallon bags of moss!). You know you're pushing too hard if the machine is grabbing as you go, but on large estate lawns getting it done at one setting without that happening is almost hopeless.

Mr. Ginja, please try the Greenworks Dethatcher. It is a cheap unit, but it does better than the commercial units. The tines are small and scrapes the lawn vs digging into it. Using a dethatcher rake afterwards is pointless because this thing gets all the dead grass. In this case, cheap is better.

I just used a spring rake once in the spring to clear the debris(once the grass starts growing again in the spring) and used a manual reel mower. The nitrogen, well, I get that for free it comes from the sky from a thunderstorm; the fertilizer was the grass clipping. Ginja, you magnificent bastard. This video is exactly what I needed because this is the EXACT situation I have in my lawn. You’re a bearded god send. I’m on the south shore of Long Island in NY and I’m noticing that I’ve got that brownish tinge to my lawn where as everyone else is greening up nicely. I have the green works de thatcher. I’m going to use that and then buy a hand thatch rake and really crush this problem. My only question is if this will effect my pre emergent (prodiamine) I threw down? Should till my brown areas after and over seed, then hit it with some tenacity? I’ve got a mix of rye and fescue. PS, you’re slowly becoming my go to. I appreciate when you said you don’t “spray and pray”... what a burn, lol.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 best comment of the week. If you have the same problem as in the video and end up doing the power rake it will disrupt the pre emergent. If you're going to over seed I would suggest lawn aeration then put the seed down. I'd run the aerator 2 to 3 passes. Get the best seed to soil contact. Works great!

I always found additional hand raking was necessary. I start with a good variable-spacing wire rake. The wire gauge would be sbout 16 or 14 AWG. Mine is chrome plated tough steel. This doesn't pick up much at all, but it aligns the junk so a sawtooth rake can pile it up without pulling up the live grass. If I used the sawtooth rake alone, it would pull up lots of good live grass. Just a little trick I picked up over the years.

You're welcome. Keep in mind we are not removing much thatch power raking. it's mostly mulch that is not decomposing. I call this mulch lawn litter and it suffocates the soil.

I felt your pain with that dethatching rake. I did my yard which was half the size of the one you did and I was gassed. Honestly the hard work paid off in the end. I feel like it got up a lot more thatch and I was able overseed since the soil was broken up nicely.

Nice job airing out that lawn. I found that the Bluebird self propels as it churns up the thatch, buried gumballs, pine cones, twigs, and so many things you had no idea were buried in the lawn. It does an excellent job. I am about to try for the first time dethatching my Zoysia. Its naturally dense but it has stopped reproducing and I am fighting moss and fungus now. My co-op said don't dethatch until it is fully growing, which means June here in Md. I didn't think to inquire about special nutrients after beating up the lawn, so thanks for mentioning that. I'll have to inquire about Zoysia specific needs. Thanks for the video. Cheers

I usually mulch the final bag back into the lawn, its the oldest and has the most microbes and nutrition. The lawn can certainly break it down now, but i still use the mower to mulch it up and spread it around. Its gone so fast, and helps the turf recover from the process.

Pest and Lawn Ginja, your content is far beyond my expectations, and my level of comprehension. My clients are more rural, do not want a perfect lawn, but I do want to learn to do the kind of work that you do. I will work on it for several years until I can call my self a pro. Thanks for the video. I live in Arizona and we have Bermuda grass. Last year I detached it with a rake and it worked pretty well. I have a small yard. I battle clover and some other weeds too so I use weed and feed or turf builder and that helps.I’m over it when it short because I have a mulcher on my mower and I don’t use a bag but I’m thinking I probably should. My color is off this year so it looks like I might have to dethatch. Last year we had so many days over 100° in no monsoon season or rain. It was brutal. Thanks for the info
