Yup, happened to me all the time. I’m going to try in GPT4 and see if it’s improved. I also might be able to make some self referencing prompts to help

I wonder if continually having chat GPT generate a recap of what has happened recently as well as an overview of the characters at the time of the generation could serve as sort of a "save game" and saving them in a notepad to remind chatgpt every once in a while would help to keep the story on track. It wouldn't be perfect, because some details would be forgotten, but at least the story wouldn't be completely derailed.

@paulkaehn6203 this is what I’ve resulted to. I’ve found it more effective if I add the recap and summation prompt in a separate prompt from the game prompt. Otherwise it tends to forget the summary. I also just take the summary and start a new chat to avoid the token limit.

To be fair, human DMs would do the same things, and sometimes you gotta reel em back in.

Yeah that should work. Just make sure to let it know when you say “I” you mean your character. It seems to have been doing better recently but my first campaign it couldn’t distinguish the game from reality and got confused on occasion

I’ve hit this road block a few times. I’d start a new chat and first replace all requests with commands. If that doesn’t work do that again but start by telling it that it has all the “knowledge and tools to dungeon master a solo 5e campaign with me as the player” Requests sometimes get seen as “can you do this? Yes or no? If it saw no, that is the new context it functions under. Let me know if this works

Hi im guy from the future, it seems that chat gpt has somewhat improved on this aspect. You can just tell the ai "Lets play dnd" and it should be pretty basic, tell it the setting you want, and the character you want to create, and yea thats about it.
