So glad to see this, though I’m a bit late. We had some good back a fourth about uploading pdfs last year. In your credential program? Sweet! Or perhaps the probation period now?! I’m a teacher myself. Sorry to hear about your health. Again, I went through a period in 2022. Radiation and all that. Keep the faith bro. So glad to see this video and can’t wait to see/try the ChatGPT DM stuff u create. /raises mug

Can i get that prompt?
@TBLReady
@TBLReady 2 ай бұрын
In a different chat I entered this and asked gpt to give me a shorter prompt that would accomplish the same goal as this one (I didn’t save the resultant prompt but that’s what I used in a new chat): “You are an expert Dungeon Master with all the knowledge of additions 3.5, 4 and 5e of dungeons and dragons. This includes all of the rules for combat, character creation, lore and all other necessary dungeons and dragons information needed to dungeon master a game. I want you, as an expert dungeon master, to run a dungeons and dragons 5th edition campaign with me as your only player. The campaign will consist of multiple adventures, plot lines and opportunities for my character to impact the world around him. We will play in the fantasy world of Faerun in a city or village of your choice. I'd like the game to be a blend of role-play and combat. When a skill check is needed you will ask me to roll for that skill and I will tell you the result of my role so you can resolve the skill check. Use the rules for combat to run all combat encounters. I will make all combat and role play decisions for my character. You will control and speak for all NPCs in the world. Feel free to correct me if I attempt to do something outside of the rules of D&D 5e. Allow me to speak for and play as the character we create for me. I will tell you what I want to do as my character and give you my characters dialog in quotations. If I need to speak to you outside of the game I will do so inside of brackets like these []. I do not want you to make any decisions for my character. Do not try to end the story at any time. This means continuing the game until I tell you it is over. We will begin with you making me a 5e dnd character. This character should be at level 2, male and have an original name befitting his race. Include his description, stats, alignment, abilities, skills, personality traits, flaws, inventory and modifiers. He should also have a backstory complete with full descriptions of his family and the story of what drove him to leave home and become an adventurer. Do you have any questions before we begin?”

I’m using GPT4 and doing a more roleplay heavy game. I find it best to set the tone with preliminary questions from the AI to clarify the kind of game you want to play and then let it know when you want to begin.

I got Name: Eldric Whitley Race: Human Class: Bard (College of Lore) Background: Scholar Appearance: Eldric is a slender young man with fair skin and short white hair. His most distinguishing feature is his round glasses, perched on his nose, that accentuate his keen and intelligent eyes. He dresses in simple yet elegant robes, adorned with intricate designs symbolizing his scholarly pursuits. Abilities: Vicious Mockery: Eldric's sharp wit and silver tongue allow him to mock his foes with devastating effect. His words can weaken their resolve, making their next attack less effective. Cure Wounds: Eldric possesses the ability to channel healing energy through touch, granting him the power to heal wounds on himself or allies. However, each use of this ability leaves him temporarily weakened, a side effect that fades after 24 hours. Charismatic Influence: Eldric's intelligence and understanding of human nature enable him to magically influence others to do his bidding. However, this power comes with a 50% chance of either overwhelming guilt or temporary physical weakness, reflecting the toll of manipulating others against their will. Background: Eldric Whitley was born into a family of scholars and sages, where knowledge and wisdom were valued above all else. From a young age, Eldric displayed a remarkable intellect and a thirst for learning, delving into ancient tomes and unraveling mysteries long forgotten. His studies eventually led him to the path of a bard, where his gift for words and music merged seamlessly with his scholarly pursuits. As a bard of the College of Lore, Eldric travels far and wide, seeking out forgotten legends and lost knowledge. His adventures often lead him into dangerous situations, where his abilities to both heal and hinder prove invaluable to his companions. Despite the risks, Eldric remains resolute in his quest for knowledge, believing that understanding the past is the key to shaping a better future for all. In his downtime, Eldric can be found in libraries and archives, poring over ancient texts and deciphering cryptic runes. His glasses gleam in the candlelight as he meticulously maps out connections between distant cultures and uncovers hidden truths buried beneath layers of history. Though young, Eldric's wisdom belies his age, and his companions often seek his counsel when faced with difficult decisions or arcane mysteries. Eldric Whitley, the scholarly bard with a silver tongue and a compassionate heart, continues his journey across realms, weaving tales of heroism and discovery wherever his travels take him.

I've always seen these one-pagers to be as deliberately low crunch as possible without just being 'imagination time' as well as being purpose built for a GM and one or two players and most easily adapted for solo play. However, as with every simple recipe, it forms a good base to grow on. So your expanded abilities are a great direction to take this kind of game in. I'll be checking out JFace's ideas too. Oh yeah, I played L&F a few times both solo and cooperative. The solo game is surprisingly well balanced. I used a simple sliding oracle and a sci-fi novel to stir in prompts. The group game was way too overpowered and pretty much became ridiculous which was its own kind of fun too.

@FriendlyDuergar-by7jm
@FriendlyDuergar-by7jm 5 ай бұрын
To be fair, even as an experienced player, I don't think you get the full experience. I would encourage you to try. There are some aspects of the game that GPT seem to do very well, and others not so much. I think the hardest thing as a beginner would be recognizing when GPT is making mistakes. Having said that, I don't think it matters much depending on what you're trying to do. If you want to get a feel for dnd and the way the game works GPT is pretty good. Stick with it and there can even be some pretty good stories. Going through the backlog of this channel, you will find a couple great examples. There are two ways that I think it can let you down. 1. There is no substitute for real people. For me sitting around a table will always be the best form of dnd. 2. It will get some of the mechanics wrong. Maybe this has improved especially with these new GPTs created here, but in my experience there are mistakes. When you take it to a live group, you'll have a few misconceptions about how things work. I think this is pretty easy to overcome. TLDR. It's not too hard, watch the old vids on this channel and go for it.

I haven't played L&F, but I have GMd some PBTAs and quite a bit of Blades in the Dark (by the same author as L&F), and these changes seem like they'd move the game away from its core tenets of being very lightweight, and with a heavy narrative based focus. For example, if you have problems with player character differentiation, might it be that you're not putting enough weight on the fictional positioning? Like sure, maybe a player has maxed out the "Lasers" stat, but if they also have a "Dangerous" style and the task would seem like it would benefit from a more careful approach, maybe the consequences if they roll and fail should be much worse than if the middle of the road character does it instead. And similarly, if one character is a "Doctor", they might get +1d to convince someone because of their past experiences dealing with uncooperative patients; so they might be the better choice even if they haven't maxed out the "Feelings" stat. Or the "Explorer" might be able to get more effect out of a successful roll when navigating an unknown area (say, by not just finding their goal, but also doing it faster than the other characters would) If this side of the game isn't coming into play, I'd first try to fix that; because maybe the problem is that I as the GM am using challenges that don't interact with the specific advantages and flaws that derive from the traits of the characters, and feel "samey" as a result. If you still want some more rules for mechanical differentiation, maybe try also subtracting -1d when the fictional positioning is bad because your traits give you a disadvantage (and with 0d, you just can't roll without help). And maybe add more traits to the list, or force the players to also select a specific "Flaw" or something along those lines? As for combat: PBTAs work perfectly fine without combat rounds, so I don't see the necessity here for them. The idea is that combat is not really different from any other challenge, and you don't use rounds for those, so why here? This game isn't really interested in combat tactics. I could see some sort of way of tracking harm being useful, but I'd steal a leaf out of Masks and have them be "Conditions" rather than HP. A condition might be "A broken arm" during a combat, but also a "Shaken confidence" if you fail an important social roll. A condition might apply a -1d to a roll when it's fictionally appropriate (or block you from doing it entirely), and you might put a limit (such as accumulating 3 conditions puts you out of the game). Players should be able to clear the conditions by following the appropriate steps according to what they are, fictionally (so, if their confidence is shaken, maybe a pep talk by another character might fix it. And of course, if the character doing the talk is of "Heroic" style, they get +1d)

At this point, given a solid prompt, it can run a great narrative combat and can even keep track of spell slots and effects. Where it struggles and what makes it a no until resolved is its inability to do math well consistently and its disregard for rules in order to support the narrative it wants to complete.

@TBLReady
@TBLReady 6 ай бұрын
@chrismaddox9884 you are not alone. Taking over PCs is honestly the biggest frustration for me in getting the game to run. I am making a gpt that should understand the roles and limitations of a dungeon master in gpt4. When it comes to stats and abilities I upload a character sheet to gpt now. I’d imagine if you sent links to sites with monster stats it would help but not enough to make it worth while. I honestly think, at this point gpt is limited to theater of the mind/ narrative / role play heavy games.

I think one of the most valuable things you can learn from Lasers & Feelings is how to design a game that has rules that are only one page long. Doing that yourself is a great idea for any game designer. And taking a more complex game you're working on and reducing it to a one page or two page game (front and back of the page) will teach you how to get at the core of the game with your rules. There are dozens, probably hundreds of games designed using the Lasers & Feelings chassis so it obviously has some merit as a game design. I think your tweak was interesting. Maybe a little more complex than you'd want for this type of pick up, one shot game. It's fun to tinker though. Adding just one more attribute and making a rule that you can only min-max one of them could achieve what you were trying to do with 4 players...each having one attribute min-maxed at each end. My observation is that most problems with Lasers & Feelings and all its offshoots can be solved with more drinking.
@TBLReady
@TBLReady 7 ай бұрын
Well said. I agree with everything you’ve said. Especially that last piece. Having Johnnie Walker play always helps round out the rules. I like the simplicity of the “add one stat, only max one”. If the goal is simplicity for a short game that’s a winner. You’re absolutely right about the value of L&F. It will have people writing up their own game without even thinking about it because of how approachable it makes game creation.

What if you roll for stats? What if you can work on moving your stats around as the campaign continues. For instance, maybe someone takes some leadership classes to earn a point in Leader (this can be done by awarding a point (or more) at the end of the session for players to move a score) Maybe you will have to have the player declare what they want to move at character creation or something so they can't move things back and forth.
