A lot of the original " Café Racer's" just turned the handle bars round. So instead of that little up, they took it to just under the clocks.

@forthebold

Looks like the seta is going to work well on that bike. I see what you mean as the rear shock mounts are really far back on the seat and doesn't give much room for the hoop to swing out. I think you'll just about get away with it, cut the frame at a safe place then work from there.

Re exhaust welding, you can weld stainless tubing etc with MIG, you do need a gas set, but you can use standard CO2/Argon mix with stainless MIG wire obviously. Gas can be simpler now as you can get handy sized "smart top" bottles which come with their own regulator set. You can buy prefabbed bends if you need to- or fab your own -angles used to form bends are 4.5° and 9°.

bold, your planning was very accurate and anything in life is measured by cost expensive and cumulative planning. I think most of your money will be gained back in insurance savings and cost, given you own the bike, put the labor in, and have little expense in the maintenance; I would say yearly you save $1000 per bike while your appreciation value, which should outweight your cost or investment; shortens over time. The math model would suggest the longer you can keep each of your cafe racers running well, the more money you will gain when you move on or decide you had enough. Not everybody builds a cafe racer to sell; but I would say 3-4 years after is when you break even. Then your sale price will determine if you made any wrong decisions or bad choices; which is personal tastes if you ask me. If you break things easily or wreck things often, then you are not helping anybody with your costs; only yourself. I think it comes down to your planning on day one, how long do you want to own the bike, use it, and can you get a measure of enjoyment to price ratio others can understand or not? I would recommend you try emphasize this for those who are in the planning phase because you can get swamped and way over your head quickly and crash or burn! But you are absolutely correct, at the end of the day the enjoyment and experience is what you take to the bank. So would you rather build a bike or a car? lol.

Very inspiring videos, keep up the great work! I'm working on my (first) cb750 k7 racer and debating about the seat - off the shelf (fitment issues) or custom made (very expensive). I'm concerned about the former mostly because I have a particularly fat tank. Moreover the 77 doesn't seem to be very popular among the racer enthusiasts, so not much available in terms of off the shelf options anyway. Any suggestions as to how to tackle this one?
@forthebold
@forthebold 7 жыл бұрын
I would measure the width of your frame, most off the shelf seats will need the frame to be drilled or tabs welded on, but they've been designed in a way that makes putting them on and off easier. Personally I'd go for an off the shelf one, even if you're only going to use the cowl and seat base then reupholster it yourself

Changing dials seems for from easy having just looked at the number of wires coming off my CB 400 SF dials compared to the one I just bought. Some more indepth vids on this would be great
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
+Clive Lindley I'll be doing that on the CX soon. But easiest way to see what all the wires do is use a battery. Attach the black wire to the negative and place each colour on the positive in turn. Then label what each one lights up.
@retribution999
@retribution999 6 жыл бұрын
OK but the old unit has many more wires attached to it than the new one. Presumably just tuck them away if not needed. Trial and error!
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Do the same to the one one and see what lights up, what you'll find on the old unit is that it'll have oil pressure, gear select, fuel level etc, whereas your new one might not.
@retribution999
@retribution999 6 жыл бұрын
Problem is that the bulbs in the old unit have two wires, but the new unit has only one wire for each bulb, so which to attach. Thx
@forthebold

Hey something about the handlebars, do we really need to use clip ons for it to be considered a cafe racer? Cause I plan to use mine as a daily commuter and sitting on that aggressive position wouldn't be so comfortable I think for me so I was wondering if using a low handle bar like on a tracker
@forthebold
@forthebold 7 жыл бұрын
The way things have evolved bikes don't really have to be slotted into specific genres & styles. Like brat bikes have higher bars and no cowl, so why not mix it up. It's whatever you feel more comfortable with.
@dowser81
@dowser81 7 жыл бұрын
A cafe racer is a bike any bike that has had all the unnecessary parts that it doesn't need to run taken off it to make it lighter/faster so if you want to have a higher set of bars to make it more comfortable you go for it.

I am not agree to change a headlight, it can improve with a new color, or change the mount bracket, even a grill or a X tape. It's better change tires. I know tires may be more expensive than the all tips that you give in this video, but there are tires with a good vintage style cheapers than the all mufflers on ebay. Every motorcycle needs new tires in some moment. Excellent video

BMW K-bikes can look great as a cafe racer. It's worth considering that the subframe doesn't line up perfectly for the cafe racer look, and may require some metal work. The K1100 and GL1100 are very heavy bikes. By shedding all of the unnecessary weight in pursuit of performance and style, you are essentially building a cafe racer.
