I bring most of your list. I've recently started carrying a folding wood saw. With the tree die off and dead trees from fires I'm finding trails that were clean last week, now have downed trees on them. And I hate turning around! Cheers

Good point. I too carry a saw, just didn’t mention in the list. Seems like I’m always the first to find them as well lol. Especially early season riding.

I'm going to be running the trail with my Dad and his friend who are past the days of two wheel bikes, they are both riding Urals with the sidecar. Do you think there is a need for a chainsaw or will the handsaw do the trick? Last year in Idaho we came across a tree on the trail about 20 inches diameter, we were able to get around it luckily.

Excellent video! Thank you. I really need to amp up my first aid kit! I also need a GPS for some extreme social distancing (like 300 miles!) moto camping that may happen in the next few weeks. A few items I always carry, a small folding saw and fire starting rods. If I land in a pond in cold weather, my clothes and lighter may be soaked. A folding saw can help process the wood needed to save you if you are staying the night. (After I crawl out of the bog, my Sig will still work)

At a minimum - some food, lots of water (I'm in NM), tools and tire repair stuff, baseball cap and larger jungle hat, sunscreen and a tarp. Fixing tube tires with no center stand on a hot (or the odd rainy) day is an ordeal - be prepared for 2-3 hours in the sun or rain.

@@backcountryadvmoto I agree, great vid. I am also really looking forward to your GPS review. Is it capable of being a stand alone unit in your mind? Ie. Use cellphone GPS/Gaia GPS for on road stuff, and the 66i for backcountry? I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the great content.

+V Track depends on the trip, but not every time we leave the house. If we are going driving out somewhere we might be far away from civilization, or out of service, then yes. We like to take drives up in the mountains in the summer and we always pack items like this just in case.

I believe the record bear killed in Alaska was by a 13-year-old girl with a 22LR. At least that wasthe old stat. There might be a new one now. My point is with well placed shots it doesn’t matter what you use something is better than nothing. In my opinion of course 😉

Strange world we live in if you need to carry a gun to feel safe. 53 years old, and only saw these when i was in the military. But hey, different continent. Luckily.
@backcountryadvmoto

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I was military for 13 years and a cop for 10. It is a strange world we live in and unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of the worst in people over the years. On the bike, I don’t carry a gun to protect myself from people. In north Idaho, I spend a lot of time in the remote backcountry and there are things like grizzlys and wolves that I’d like to have an advantage over.
@PewLand
@PewLand 3 жыл бұрын
If you dont carry at least some kind of weapon on you in the remote wilderness, you cant really call yourself prepared. Man has been using tools to defend themselves since the stone age from wild animals or whatever else could try and kill you. It's better to be prepared for the worst than to find yourself in a defensive situation and have nothing but your bare hands to protect yourself or loved ones. Self defense is a basic human right.

Do you carry on your waistband? My concern about carrying while riding is that guns aren't soft, and If I were to fall on one of mine I could really hurt myself.

Hey really nice Video, just working my way through your back catalogue historical video's as I have 3 bikes, CRF1000L Adventure Sport (silver) 2019, VFR800 2003 VTEC red, and a CRF250L 2013, I was surprised about the firearm towards the end. Its something in the UK I personally can't get my head around. I understand it's totally your right, I also appreciate you are well trained in its use. But can you enlighten me briefly why so many people carry a firearm or even open carry versus concealed? In the UK, its obviously not allowed whatsoever, unless you are a trained fire arms officer on duty. Even anything more than a penknife (like smaller than 3"/ baseball/ cricket bat is almost prohibited ... without a ball/ glove to go with it to prove use for play time. Is it because of bears and wild animals? or generally protection from low life scum who might like to do you harm, or take your property who are likely to be carrying illegally? Is this a real day to day risk? I have been to the US before and stopped with a family in Illinois (and had a great time by the way) for Christmas after meeting my partner at the time in Mexico Cancun during spring break, the distance proved a big problem. I could have seen myself living in the US, it didn't work out but still best friends with the fine lady. I have also recently been to New york, I felt very safe actually in New York, which I wasn't really expecting before I went, but I appreciate crime is much lower there now. I guess if you watch the films you don't appreciate that. I'm not challenging, I have been clay pigeon shooting, and also have had an air arms air rifle less than the maximum allowed pressure, but just curious, hope you have the time to reply. All the best, Mark
