A transition step to consider before going full strapless....... use a single foot hook in the front. Great instructional!

I started foiling without straps, i felt they were not condusive to a quick exit if things went wrong. I employed the same technique i use for a surf board, no hands on board, simply rest heels on rail without pressure, and let the kite do the work to pull you up and onto board. I started out on a 12m in breezes of 6 to 10 knots and found that was pretty ideal. Mast was 55cm for first 2 hours then 85 cm after that. Longer mast was a little harder to position but only marginally.

Thanks Ian. There are many ways that work for different people, good to hear your method. What foil are you riding? I think the type of wing can make a difference along with the style of board (volume or abs) but ultimately for the strapless waterstart pass experience is the biggest advantage. If you ride a strapless surfboard then its a no brainer on a foil for most people. The method I use in the video is really the worse case scenario for anyone who struggles with the the strapless waterstart, at-least it's what I think makes it the easiest :-)

I don't even bother with starting my strapless foil on its side. Maybe its easier for others? I find it a pain so I just put my heels on the board and let the kite pull me up.

These tips are really for people learning the strapless waterstart and making it as easiest as possible any foil/board even if you kite handling skills aren't amazing. Some people may not find it necessary. I don't always turn the board on its side either, using my heels to sink the board slightly on one side but I think that requires better kite control and understanding of how you foil will react. Like everything on foils, different things work for different people but hopefully, this helps some people who are struggling.

What are your thoughts on line extensions, particularly in lighter wind?
@progressionsports

Some people really like them. It slows the kite down but gives you a long stroke of the kite so you can build up a longer drive of power to get you up and riding. Personally I stick with normal length lines (20-23m) and use various looping techniques to build up power.

Thanks for that Rob, I haven't downloaded the lesson yet, still working on gybes...., Is my Jackson 145 a " floaty " board? the Shinn mast fills with water will this hinder the move ? could the mast be sealed.?
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Graeme. The Jackson's are low volume boards so not overly "floatly" but really the style of board and what is better for one thing over another, is really down to personal preference and what you get used it. My experience is that people find the strapless waterstart easier with a low volume board like the jackson but many people will have experiences of the opposite! Regarding the mast, water does get inside but I don't think it really has much impact on the way the foil will rides (I rode Shinn for over a year and never noticed it being an issue).

Hello and thx for the video. I would like to know how important is the board length for a beginner. Is it as critical as Mast length ? And what would be the ideal size ( lets say for a tiny light guy 60KG ) So far with the very little experience I have. I noticed that I dont like boards with volume. I am thinking of getting a Moses ONDA set up with 71cm Mast with either T38 or T22 board which is much shorter ( 109cm vs 125cm) but also so incredibly light. Thx for your help, since all of these toys are not cheap I would like to make the best purchase

Board length is important when first learning and for the core techniques - a board thats is too short will be harder to ride off the foil or will nose drive easily when you touch down accidentally. I'd say 130cm is the minimum for most people and ideal 140-150cm. For someone of 60kg then you can get away with something in the area of 130cm with it has some width. You may be ok with the T38 at 125cm though it not an ideal length for a beginner and on the Mose website they say its for medium to expert foilers. And just so you are aware the T38 and T22 are volume boards, not masively high volume but they aren't really low volume like the ABS style boards.

@@progressionsports Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I read also that its better to use a tube kite than a foil as a beginner ( besides crashing it ) what is the reason for that ? Is it the angle of pull ?
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ronagery Because the vast majority of kiteboarders are used to riding tube kites, so it's easier to stick with what you know on the kite side and focus your learning on the foil. If you are already a foil kite rider then no problem.

Indeed, strapless in surf makes it much more difficult. And I use foil kites which don't drag as much as LEIs such that I have little leeway to keep my feet in contact with the board. So I screwed a 1" wide strap (webbing) in the front of the board to retain the board with my front foot; the strap makes a large loop (4" to 5") to ensure my front foot always comes out when I fall and it never hinders my foot work. You step on the webbing and it disappears since it is thin. Works nice.
